Disney is planning a new banner to distribute Walt Disney Studios Intl. Prods. films in the U.S., offering DVD, VOD and possibly digital downloads of films developed locally for territories such as China, Russia and India.

Similar to the Fox World Cinema label, the new venture would offer limited U.S. theatrical platform releases for select titles, as Disney did with the recent rollout of its Indian action-adventure feature "Zokkomon" following the film's bow at the Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles.

The program, whose launch is expected in the next few months, will brand and expand the retail reach of titles in the U.S. marketplace, and the number of Disney overseas productions will likely increase. Early last year, Disney named Jason Reed to head the Intl. Prods. arm as exec VP and general manager, with a mission to expand the division's slate.

The Mouse House, for example, plans to release about three films per year in India, representing a "mix of big and small Disney-brandedbranded product," Reed said at a CinemaCon panel in March.

"You never really understand how a territory works until you're on the ground talking with the filmmakers," Reed added.

Disney isn't currently planning to acquire foreign films for the banner, but pickups may eventually be incorporated under the as-yet-unnamed label to capitalize on its expected retail presence.

Disney's goal is to find local, "magical" stories that fit its brand and have appeal for specific foreign audiences. Over the past few years, the Intl. Prods. arm has produced or co-produced numerous local-language titles, including "The Secret of the Magic Gourd" in China, "Roadside Romeo" in India and "The Book of Masters" in Russia. Studio has also been ramping up its efforts in the Middle East, especially in countries like Israel and Jordan, where the studio produced an inspirational sports pic, Reed said.

Initial efforts were part of Disney head Robert Iger's mandate to provide product for its many international distribution outlets. The new initiative aims to bring overseas stories to domestic niche auds and explore the breakout potential of projects that may have cross-cultural appeal.

News follows last week's announcement of the Fox World Cinema label, launching later this year from 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment. That banner will provide DVD, VOD, digital download and select theatrical distribution for Fox Intl. Productions titles and potential overseas acquisitions

Walt Disney Studios will handle home entertainment distribution of key titles from UTV Motion Pictures.

"Disney India's home entertainment business went direct early last year and in addition to distributing our own Disney titles, by working with key titles from UTV's film slate, we continue to bring great stories and content to the small screens, entertaining families and children all over India," said Mahesh Samat, MD of The Walt Disney Company, India.

Walt Disney has a majority stake in UTV Software Communications, the film studio's parent company, though does not have managerial control.

Titles covered by the deal include hits Raajneeti (pictured) and I Hate Luv Storys, Udaan, last year's Academy Awards entry Harishchandrachi Factory, What's Your Raashee? and Aage Se Right.

Disney's home entertainment division is a leader in India and distributes the full range of Disney branded and non-branded DVD products produced, developed or acquired by the Walt Disney Studios as well as various television businesses including Disney-ABC, Disney Channel and Playhouse Disney.

UTVMP's upcoming slate includes Sanjay Leela Bansali's Guzaarish, Rajkumar Gupta's No One Killed Jessica and Farah Khan's Tees Maar Khan.

It looks like they found a label! (To distribute Disney's locally produced foreign films)

Do Dooni Chaar, Once Upon a Warrior and Zokkomon come out July 26th (Disney's Indian films)

Trail of the Panda (Chinese ) comes out Sept I think on DVD. as does the chinese version of (insert sigh here) High School Musical.
Sadly no news as yet on the big budget Disney Russian Film Book of Masters..But we will wait and see.

I realize this may only interest a few people but there it is none the less.
I have seen Do Dooni Chaar and it is a very sweet little comedy.
I also highly recomend Trail of the Panda (chinese) which is very much in keeping with the sort of films made for the wonderful World of Disney -back in its hey day (the sort of film Disneys hollywood studio wouldnt be caught dead making these days.)
I will restrain from my rant regarding the plethora of Dis channel movies about Disney teen queens wanting to become rockstars and grow up and sing in bands etc...

I saw a hand full of these on the DMR site and looked them up on Amazon. Only thing I wonder is if they will have a choice on the DVDs of Dubbing or subtitles or if it will be one or the other.

PS.sorry for posting this twice... too early-too little cofee and too many glitches with my computor. :)

Hey dont forget Once Upon a Warrior (Aganaga O Dheerudu) Its a Disneys first Southern Indian Film-which is Telugu....Tollywood (as opposed to Bollywood :) )

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/ ... eimprovemz

It was one of the most expensive effects laden films ever made in India...visually stunning--

I have emailed Disney to find out if The Book of Masters will be released and quite frankly have gotten nowhere...No one seems to know or care about it. I have russian friends who werent terribly impressed by it but I'd rather own a dvd copy than watch in on youtube...So heres hoping.
Also for the curious...Disney has its first middle east production coming out in the not too distant future called 'The United' about football players from various arab countries coming together to form a football team.

No, not the Mainstreet Cinema at Disney World in Orlando, but...

Just got an e-mail from DMR promoting this new line of movies. Looks like Bollywood movies. When did they start this line?

Ah, no wonder I didn't see the second thread. I was too busy moving to Calgary when the thread was posted. Did a search before I started this one but nothing came up.

Just got the DMR e-mail about these. Is Disney actually producing these or just distributing them like the Studio Ghibli movies?

I can just picture who is going to be picking these up...

Disney is producing them for the local markets and have been for a while.
Disney Russia is producing two more this year. Disney in the middle east has a couple coming out begining with The United. Disney China has a whole slew of new films in production and Disney India has formed a partnership with UTV to continue producing films for Disney.
The only current aquisition as I understand it may be Disney Spain Captain Thunder.

I picked up Once Upon a Warrior and Do Dooni Chaar today. I also read the back of Zokkomon but thought I would give these two a chance prior to picking that one up.

All of the films are 2.35:1 and presented in their original language tracks. There is an English subtitle track, but no English dub on any of the discs.

Absolutely no special features, and only previews for other Disney World Cinema productions.

Overall, not bad discs but certainly nothing to put these films in context. The distribution intends to let these films speak for themselves.

So, anyone pick these up?

I just saw a couple of the trailers. Once Upon a Warrior looks pretty good, kinda like Prince of Persia. Trail of the Panda reminds me of White Fang, Journey of Natty Gann, and maybe Cheetah put together.

Are they dubbed in english or do they have subtitles?

Are there any foreign animated films going to get released though this line? For example, Roadside Romeo. I don't know any others.

I want to hear someones opinion too. I just saw Trail of the Panda on the shelf yesterday at Walmart. Methinks the only person that will be buying these is reyquila...
