I know a few threads have come and gone regarding Dumbo on Blu-ray/DVD, but I thought it best to create a new one since the older ones list the previous (cancelled) release date and may be a bit confusing.

As announced today, Dumbo "70th Anniversary Edition" Blu-ray/DVD will finally be released in North America on 9/20/11.

Given the history of this Dumbo release, I'm taking this news with a grain of salt, but it is good to see what appears to be a firm release date after hearing nothing for over a year.

I wonder if or how this will affect Fox and the Hound's release?

Took them long enough. Featurette on the Disneyland ride sounds cute. Maybe it'll show us stuff on the upcoming WDW remake.

Don't get your hopes up. The bonus material listed in the press release is exactly the same found in the UK/Mexico release. The featurette on the Disneyland ride is nothing more than a glorified infomercial...

"Disney has just officially set the Dumbo: 70th Anniversary Edition for release on Blu-ray/DVD Combo (in both BD and DVD packaging) and DVD on 9/20 (SRP $39.99 and $29.99 - it will also be available for HD download and SD download that same day for essentially the same price). The Walt Disney Restoration team apparently started with the original 70 year old nitrate camera negative stored with the U.S. Library of Congress, and turned to an original nitrate dye-transfer Technicolor print held by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as a color reference. Audio was sourced from a rare print held by the UCLA Film and Television Archives which was apparently "the earliest surviving generation" of the original audio, and will include 7.1 DTS and 5.1 Disney Enhanced Home Theatre mixes. Extras on the DVD will include audio commentary (with Pete Docter, Paula Sigman and Andreas Deja), the original Walt Disney television introduction, a deleted scene (The Mouse's Tale), a deleted song (Are You a Man or a Mouse?), the Taking Flight: The Making of Dumbo documentary, The Magic of Dumbo: A Ride of Passage featurette (on the Disneyland theme part ride) and a sound design excerpt from The Reluctant Dragon. The Blu-ray will include all that, plus a Cine-Explore viewing mode, Disney View, a pair of interactive games (What Do You See? and What Do You Know?), the Celebrating Dumbo featurette and a pair of animated shorts (The Flying Mouse and Elmer Elephant)."

Yeah, there was a little bit of discussion over at Blu-ray.com if a September Dumbo release was bad news for The Fox and the Hound (meaning it would be bumped). I don't see why both releases couldn't "share" the same month; we got Bambi and Tangled in March (and Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind for the Studio Ghibli fans )!

Hey don't forget, there's two rides at Disneyland based on Dumbo: Casey Jr. Circus Train and Dumbo's Flying Elephants.

Why Blu-ray releases like this and Alice in Wonderland look 10x better than the Diamond Editions is baffling.

Also, it sounds like a pretty solid release, bonus wise right? I can't wait to watch Dumbo in HD.

It's a nice cover, but it'd look so much better if the title was sideways or something.

Yay! Finally!

I hope not too many will complain about this, but judging from the press release, the Art Gallery that was on the Mexican Blu-ray will be absent from the American one. I'm sure a percentage of that artwork will be in the Cine-Explore, but this description from the Blu-ray.com review sounds so good!

"Art Galleries (1080p)
Includes brilliant galleries for Visual Development, Character Design, Layouts & Backgrounds, Storyboard Art, Production Pictures, Publicity, and even the Original Dumbo Storybook (1941). All of the galleries are self-directed and easy to navigate."

Oh well. There's always something to find disappointing about these releases, isn't there?

Can someone please tell me which year this edition is celebrating, I don't see it anywhere on the cover art?
