Lots of great movies coming this summer, but I'll do a reverse on this and list the movies to avoid at all costs:

1. Arthur (Warner Bros. remake)
2. Scream 4 (this franchise has worn out its welcome)
3. The Hangover 2 (didn't like the first one, so no interest in this one)
4. Conan the Barbarian (another useless remake - avoid this for sure!)

Since I will be leaving for Brazil on a two-year service mission in June, therefore dramatically limiting my movie watching, I will be listing my five most anticipated films for each summer I am gone.

I'll wait on reviews for Kung Fu Panda 2 and The Hangover Part II before I check those out. I plan on seeing Scream 4 but didn't list it because the summer movie season really starts in May.

Are you more of an arthouse film kinda guy?

Not really. I think Goliath only likes movies that he has to read the sub-titles or only those movies that appeal to the artsy-fartsy crowd. He can't stand to be entertained...........after all that's what movies are supposed to be - Entertainment!!!!

Not exclusively. I have a very broad taste. For instance, I love what I call 'classic Hollywood'. My favorite movies include the likes of The Godfather-trilogy; Dog Day Afternoon; Sunset Blvd.; Rear Window; The Magnificent Seven and many, many other classics. I also enjoy films like Die Hard and Back to the Future and on my 'guilty pleasures list' are titles like Ten things I hate about you and 13 going on 30. I just don't like to pin myself on one genre or one kind of movie.

It's not that I hate Hollywood; it's just that I feel that lately, most of their output consists of sequel after sequel; revived 1980's franchises that should've died with that decade; remake upon remake; and superhero- and fairy tale movies that are just not my cup of tea. I enjoy a good popcorn flick as much as the next guy and I don't look down on that, as long as they're made well and lately, I think the creativity has run out in Hollywood. Of course, there are still occasional gems, like last year's Black Swann, but they're becoming increasingly rare.

I don't agree with dvdjunkie's claim that movies are "supposed to" be 'just entertainment'. In fact, I don't think movies are "supposed to" be anything specific-- they can be everything! Movies can be art. The medium has been around since 1895 and has developed dramatically ever since. Many people see film as art, and it certainly can be that, like it also can be great entertainment. I just don't see why those two should be mutually exclusive. Whenever I watch an 'arthouse film' that's really good, I am entertained. I just don't see why one should limit themselves to American movies only. It's a universal language and movies are made everywhere. I've seen the most beautiful, touching, heart-felt movies from South-Korea, Taiwan, Brazil, South-Africa, Burkino Faso and Kazachstan even.

If that's not your cup of tea, I don't blame you for that. But don't knock it with easy and lazy labeling like "artsy-fartsy". I will watch any movie that's good, whether it comes from Hollywood or the most obscure country in the world. I just wish Hollywood would become a lot more creative again, like they were in the past.


Oh, and dvdjunkie: I have to read subtitles almost always, since American movies and tv shows are all subtitled over here, too! (Not that I really need that when it's in English, because I'm fluent in it, but still...)

I am! In fact, that (the part of your reply I bolded) is exactly what I would have said about Wes Craven's last film- My Soul to Take.

But then... you like N.C.I.S., so that says a lot.
