Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind (Warriors of the Wind)

Any fans of this awesome Japanese animated Sci-fi fantasy adventure from Hayao Miyazaki? It debuted in 1984 and became Ghibli's first movie, Miyazaki made a manga in 1982 then made the film right away as it became a smash hit in Japan even with critics.

It later came to the US in the summer of 1985 from New World Pictures in a heavily edited, cut and dubbed version called "Warriors of the Wind" and had a terrible cover art/poster, Miyazaki did not approved and caused him for other studios who want to distribute his movies with no cuts.

I fell in love with the film in the 80's when i was 5 years old about 25 years ago in it's Warriors of the Wind cut when i rented it for it was one of the coolest animated movies i've ever seen and even had my parents taped it for me on another VCR. But i didn't realize that the movie i grew up with was a butchery until i saw the uncut fansub tape in my city's high school anime club but i learned to accept it until there will be a better dub/cut. That miracle happened in 2005 as i bought it the first day on DVD and now have it on Blu-Ray for it looks great.

Did you know that this movie was one of the influences to James Cameron's Avatar? i mean he is a fan of animation, anime and Miyazaki productions.

I like it, as I do all Miyazaki/Ghibli stuff, but I've only seen it once (after it came out on DVD.)

It isn't my favorite Miyazaki/Ghibli title, I suck at rankings, but it would probably be above Porco Rosso, Castle in the Sky, and maybe a few others. I'd like to find the manga for Nausicaa.

All this is based on what I recall of my impressions from watching it (and the others) one time, several years ago, I need to revisit a lot of the Ghibli titles.

My tops (not necessarily in order):
Grave of the Fireflies - Powerful, but not a movie I'd rewatch a lot (particularly if I was wanting to be entertained, or have a "happy" feeling at the end.)
Spirited Away - I saw this in the theater with my mom, and we both loved it. I've seen it several times on DVD.
My Neighbor Totoro - Again, I was only exposed to it on Disney DVD, but it is amazing.
Kiki's Delivery Service - My first Ghibli title, on Laserdisc. It's "magical"
The Castle of Cagliostro - I'm a Lupin the IIIrd fan
Panda Go Panda - How can anyone not love this!?

The Castle of Cagliostro - I'm a Lupin the IIIrd fan

LOVE this film. The action scene on that road was so intense.

Panda Go Panda - How can anyone not love this!?

Do you know where I can get this? The OOP dvd sells for 90 something bucks on amazon!
Sorry to be a hater on Kung Fu Panda, but this is why I hate the film. Pandas are my favorite animal and the Dreamworks film is such an embarrassment. That's why I'm glad Hayao Miyazaki wrote a panda film.

Just check used stores, is all I can say. Amazon had a VHS for 11 bucks or so.

There were two versions, the original disc, and a best seller "Signature Series" disc that had a red banner across the top. I think the disc itself was exactly the same (no remastering, etc.)

I've probably had mine for at least 7-8 years, if not more.

Anyone else grew up with the Warriors of the Wind cut? it introduced every 80's child to Miyazaki and anime even when it aired on HBO back then and became one of my favorites.

It featured Cam "Leonardo the turtle and original Keneda" Clark, Linda Gary (He-Man) and Hal Smith (Ducktales, American Tail, Fuzzbucket, Andy Griffith) and more as the original voices.

Anyone else finds the film also similar to Avatar by James Cameron? it was one of his inspirations he stated and is his fave Ghibli fan as he did some homages to his works in the film. There's the biolumescent toxic air jungle, environmentalist themes, strange creatures, set in the future, a strong female character, boy meets girl, Neytiri being like Nausicaa while Jake Sully being like Asobel, Quatrich being kind of like Kurotowa, man vs. nature and that kind of thing. Even the ending was a huge homage to the resurrection ending.

Though The Castle of Cagliostro is nice film. I never really like it as a Lupin film. To me, Miyazaki's style(art and story telling) doesn't transit well with Monkey Punch's Lupin III series. It just doesn't.

This i why I always wondered why Miyazaki made a movie adaption to Lupin franchise.

In fact on youtube they have the butchered Warriors of the Wind edition complete with the hilarious English dub dialog shown, it's good for a chuckle.
