Though Tim Burton is hard at work on an adaptation of the funky, creepy 60’s sci-fi series Dark Shadows, which is yet another collaboration with Johnny Depp, the wheels are already in motion for the project after that and The Hollywood Reporter tells us that will be a new version of The Hunchback of Notre Dame.

Burton has teamed up with Josh Brolin on the film, which will be written by Kieran and Michele Mulroney (Sherlock Holmes 2). It’s still extremely early, and because Burton is busy on Dark Shadows he won’t commit to anything until there’s a completed script. But the classic story – which follows a deformed hunchback who falls in love with a beautiful gypsy – seems like the kind of world Burton would like to play in for awhile.
Brolin will produce and star as the deformed hero Quasimodo, who last hit the screen as part of a Disney movie in 1997 (pictured above). One imagines Burton would take the motion-capture route once again with this, though you shouldn’t expect to hear much more for awhile (or at least until a script has been approved).
Burton fans may see this as yet another cop out to existing material instead of the director taking on something new and fresh, but it’s still a cool story that could once again find success through Burton’s imaginative eyes.

Out of any of the tales that could be re-created by Burton, this one is certainly ab obvious choice for the guy. I just feel like it seem natural for him to do the project. I'd be happy to see it done!

It's for Warner Bros., so I guess it needs to be moved to the "Movies, Music and TV" board to avoid confusion.

This could go either way. I would love to see a version close to the book, but it being Burton, who knows. But I wonder who Johnny Depp would play? Phoebus? Clopin?

That's fantastic news! I hope Alan Rickman plays Frollo and Johnny Depp plays Clopin.

I hope they make this.

Because you know, Disney couldn't possibly resist to cash in on this one. I mean, we're talking about the company that released Giant Peach on Blu-ray to cash in on Alice in Wonderland.

Surely we'll see a nice Hunchback blu-ray.

Goddamn, how many projects is Tim Burton signed onto now?

This is like what, his fourth that he's currently attached to, and what, his fourth that Depp is going to be in.

Guillermo del Toro is even worse :D. And since Burton is both doing Dark Shadows, and Frankenweenie, I wouldn't expect this movie soon. If it happens at all, that is.

Good thinking! :thumb:

Not sure why the article assumes so quickly that this would be motion capture, but I like Burton and I like Hunchback, so I'm excited!

Burton is overrated. So is Depp. And the combination of the two is most overrated of all. Seriously.

But seeing as this project is a long way off, we'll have to wait a long time for the blu ray.

No he's not.

I tend to agree. The guy usually has great ideas but doesn't execute them well. My opinion, of course. (Just in case anyone thought that everything I said was fact and only fact. :tink:)

I will watch everything Tim Burton makes, I love his style and I think the guy is a genius^^ And since I love Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter as well, I think it's great that Burton keeps using them (as well as Christopher Lee and all the other actors he have used in several of his films).

I dunno, while I think Tim Burton's been in a little of a creative rut, I can't really hold anything against the guy who did "Pee-Wee's Big Adventure," "Edward Scissorhands," "Ed Wood," "Big Fish," and "Sweeney Todd." Not to mention "Batman Returns" which IMO is still the closest to a definitive version of the comic book character on celluloid. So I'm pretty much okay with him trying whatever the hell he wants to do.

Also, I mean, if I were a director and got along exceptionally well with certain actors, I'd probably cast them over and over in my movies, too. Why not?

Well, we already assumed that, since this is an opinion forum. :P

Though some people debate that or don't comprehend that as of lately :shifty:
