So for the first time in my life, I'm going to go through all of the Disney sequels. I haven't really seen any of them, and if I have it was mainly the Aladdin sequels and Lion King II when I was a kid. I'm starting my marathon, cause I'm genuinely curious about them. I know they're all going to be pretty bad/awful - or, at least, I'm expecting them to be - so I might end up being pleasantly surprised in the long run if I run into any gems. I won't be doing these in order, and when a movie has two or more sequels I'll probably make a whole post covering them.

It'll take weeks, maybe even months, before I finish all of these. Most of these I really do not want to see. Pretty much all of these will be movies I haven't seen before, so these are first time impressions from a big fan of Disney movies. On the side, I'm marathoning Babylon 5 on Netflix too, so I won't be able to see these movies on a constant basis. However this thread WILL be consistently updated everytime a movie gets crossed off the below list.

Right, now let's begin...

This is a very interesting movie, as it really didn't come out as expected. I was told beforehand by Super Aurora that this movie will cover WWII era England, so I expected this to deal with some heavy themes. What I didn't expect is that the focus will be on the real world characters rather than the characters from Neverland, like in the original Peter Pan - which I feel was more about Peter Pan and Tinkerbell than about Wendy and her brothers (I could go on about this, but this is a review of Return to Neverland not Peter Pan). Right, I'll begin.

The Bad:

There is, unfortunately, more said about the bad than the good, which is sad cause this movie has real potential, but I feel like I should start with the bad aspects before I explain the good ones.

Humor - For one, the humor in it is really unfunny, which is a pain cause I thought the original Peter Pan was quite hilarious. I find it, in a lot of ways, kind of offensive cause the humor constantly makes jokes that are referencing the first movie, such as when Smee being Captain Hook's chiropractor or Captain Hook being afraid of the octopus monster. What's worse about the later, is that we're not really given much of an explanation to why the octopus is making Captain Hook scream and prance around like a girl. Matter of fact at the beginning of the movie Captain Hook tried to use the monster to set a trap for Peter.

Then there's other really unfunny stuff such as the "spit-handshake" the Lost Boys do, or general Captain Hook antics in this movie I feel are overdone and tired by this point. Captain Hook had weaknesses in the original, but was competant as Peter's antagonist. This wasn't really the case with Return to Neverland, which is kind of disappointing. I guess after getting humilated, Captain Hook just isn't as great as he is anymore.

Admittedly there are some really great gags in the movie, such as when Tinkerbell basically covers Jane's face in pixie dust. It's almost like if Tinkerbell was covering Jane's face in a pixie bukkake as it was poured all over her face. This was a sign that Tinkerbell just really didn't give a shit, so she was mostly in character and funny as ever. Same with Peter too, who is consistently funny and dickish throughout the movie. Then there's also when Captain Hook shows a picture of his mother, that was actually pretty funny.

Music - My god, is the music bad in this. Peter Pan isn't really meant to have this type of music in it, especially with the darker mood and theme of the movie. It'd be almost like if I made a movie about the Holocaust and put Benny Hill music in the background when people are sent to die in gas chambers. Everytime I heard a singing track, it felt inappropriate and really half-assed. It's very pop-ish and Disney Channel in style.

They really should've done something more dark and drab for the real world scenes, in my opinion

Tinkerbell Isn't Sexy - This is a very specific category, but I really miss the sexy Tinkerbell. She's still cute in this, but her sexy side is mostly gone. I'll let this gif do all the talking:

The Good:

Fortunately the movie has some really good aspects to it!

Characters - I really have no legitimate qualms with the central characters. In particular, Jane is actually competent little girl protagonist. Seeing Wendy grow up to be an attractive mother, and Peter Pan and Tinkerbell stay mostly in character was pretty great.

Onto Jane, she's the main star of the movie and gets the most character development out of anyone in the film. Disney could've easily made her into a Mary Sue or a horrible character, but she was actually likable! It was nice to have a character go into Neverland and basically shit all over it with her realistic outlook on life. Her interaction with Peter, Tinkerbell, and the Lost Boys are hilarious - even more-so than with Wendy and her brothers from the original movie.

However while I find Peter Pan and Tinkerbell to be in-character, I think it's unfortunate that they've regressed to the state their relationship was from the first movie. In the first movie, Tinkerbell got over her jealousy she had of other girls when they wanted a piece of Peter Pan. Now it's regressed all over again, but thankfully the actual interaction between her and Jane isn't half-assed more-so than it's rehashy. Peter Pan has grown up a little bit, and actually gets more adult in his emotions throughout the movie at moments - which only happened once in the original Peter Pan - but he's still a big asshole like he's always been.

The Meh:

There are really not much to say about this, but I found the Story itself to be really meh and kind of boring. There is nothing to say about Neverland in this movie other than it's...Neverland. The Lost Boys are mostly the same and are still not really likable. I think this movie could've benefited a lot if it was about the other parts of Neverland that we never explored in the first movie.

Conclusion:

This movie had a lot of really dumb stuff in it, but where it's strengths were it shined and were pretty inoffensive in design. The original Peter Pan is about jealously (but that is another subject for another time), and Return to Neverland is about the struggles between reality and fantasy. For what it does, it works, and I won't lie when I said I didn't enjoy watching it. In the very least, Return to Neverland is still better than Lady and the Tramp, The Rescuers Down Under, Brother Bear, The Jungle Book, or The Sword in the Stone. You can quote me on that!

King of Thieves, Ariel's Beginning, A Twist in Time and Kronk's New Groove aren't as horrible as all the other sequels. (Of the ones I own, in my opinion.) A Twist in Time is a true disservice to Cinderella's character but the other are pretty faithful. I've seen Mulan II which wasn't THAT bad and I have fond childhood memories of The Enchanted Christmas (although they may be false.. I remember Return of Jafar well and it's actually horrible. )

*As a sidenote, the thing that bothers me about Ariel's Begining is the fact that it's screwing up the timeline of the tv series. Assuming the series is considered canon, it happens during the time of Ariel's Beginning.. the series leads up to the original movie, so does the third movie happen before the series? I'm not sure. It's just weird.

So far, my favourite ones are 'The Lion King 1½', 'Bambi and the Great Prince of the Forest', 'Tinker Bell', 'Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure' and 'Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue'!

I saw the list and think that you should also watch the other two Lilo and Stitch sequels:

and
Leroy and Stitch

These are well worth watching.

I know the world and his wife hates the sequels, but I do rather enjoy discussions on them, and what Disney could have done differently etc.

And plus, there are quite a few that I enjoy as well. Not all of them mind you, but some.

What REALLY annoys me about this movie is the fact that they got Kathryn Beaumont back for Wendy's voice, but then they scrapped that version and got rid of all her voicework ! And got some crappy 'faux British' woman to do it instead. I forget her name, but she does lots of work for Disney....?

You're thinking of Kath Soucie. You may recognise her voice from Phil & Lil in Rugrats, Tish in The Weekenders, Princess Sally in Sonic the Hedgehog and Kanga in Winnie the Pooh.

And I agree. I don't understand why they couldn't have used Kathryn Beaumont (though, I had no idea she had recorded dialogue).

Whoa, I totally forgot that I asked her about that! It's not so clear whether or not she actually recorded dialogue, though. Maybe she was brought in to try out some lines during the storyboard process? It's really lame they decided not to use her.

Wow...well, let me start by saying that this turned out for the worse than I expected. Now don't get me wrong, I'm actually okay with this movie's existence, but is it really a good follow up to the original which is held up as a masterpiece?

The Meh:

Okay first I begin with the meh aspects of the movie. Why? Well, there's so much of it! I'm actually kind of overwhelmed by it, in fact...

Characters - Every character in this movie is pretty meh with the exception of the porcupine who provides as decent comic relief. While the side characters in the original Bambi weren't that great, this movie takes it to a whole 'nother level. All of the side characters feel like modernized and really dull versions of their original counterparts, which is no shock cause I kind of expected this going into a Disney sequel marathon. However the biggest offender to this is Ronno, who is incompetent, retarded, and boring as an antagonist. I hate this piece of waste character, he shouldn't be in the movie. It's about as hamfisted as if putting Han Solo into Episode III of Star Wars for no real reason other than he was in the original movies. This movie wasn't about Ronno, and he didn't contribute anything to the movie other than villainous humor.

On the other hand, the Prince of the Forest is pretty great in this, but he acts out of character. In the original movie, his role was more ominous, but now they've given him more human-qualities like the rest of the cast, and this kind of destroys a bit of what made him mysterious and awesome in the original. However with what they did with him (which I'll explain later) is actually pretty great. Bambi also acts pretty consistent with his original personality in the movie, but I don't think his character worked as well as the Prince of the Forest in the transition from Bambi to Bambi II.

Now the sad thing about this movie is, while the movie does have a Story, the movie is about the characters, even the side ones, so to see such a great rift between the supporting cast and Bambi and his father in terms of actual writing and development is pretty depressing. All of the side characters really felt like they were shoe-horned there for what could've potentially been a truly great followup to the original, focusing on Bambi and his father exclusively.

The Good:

The movie had some good things about it, even great, in fact! Unfortunately the good is outshadowed by the overbearing characters, despite it having more in quantity...

Animation - The animation is great, surprisingly. I've seen the animation for various other Disney sequels, but I think this'll be the one that tops it. A lot of effort was put into it, and scenes like Bambi's dream sequence were absolutely beautiful. It really does this aspect right, and because of this I think in the animation department it holds a candle to the original as staying true to it's quality.

Voice Acting - The voice acting in this movie was superb, and was genuine to the original characters, despite their personalities being altered. Patrick Stewart in particular is spectacular as the Prince of the Forest. If these guys dubbed the original Bambi movie, I'm willing to bet common people wouldn't notice the different.

Character Development - There isn't much to say on this, since there isn't a lot of this in Bambi II, but fortunately when it did it really shined. The relationship between Bambi and his father was pretty convincing and believable, but I did feel like the Prince was too ecstatic with Bambi that kind of threw him out of character as I stated in the above paragraphs.

The Inconsistent:

Okay, you twit-tats I'm about to rant about how inconsistent this movie is in both plot and quality. I have no specific categories, but a few of things in this movie doesn't stay true to the original Bambi and to itself.

• Amazing opening music, horrible popish music for the rest.
• Great character development scene...then a scene that shows the movie to be mystical in nature...then really, really dull and stupid humor. The movie, unfortunately is full of the later. Why can't they stick to one demographic?
• Since when did the owl becoming the Prince's messenger and loyal subject?
• If Ronno is such an important character in Bambi's life as a kid, why didn't Bambi not recognize him?
• Bambi suddenly gets over his mother's death at the beginning of the movie as he becomes ecstatic around his father? What the F*CK?!

I already mentioned how inconsistent the characters are, also. This is the complete opposite with Return to Neverland, which I felt the movie stayed genuinely true to the characters.

The Bad:

Conclusion:

By all means, this movie wasn't that bad. It had signs of greatness, for sure, but it was held back by everything else. All I can really say about this movie is "meh" for the most part. It was okay, I guess...but nothing special. It certainly doesn't hold a candle to the original, which is not only masterful in execution but everything Bambi II does good, Bambi does a lot better. Ultimately this is just a pointless addition to Bambi lore that could've been a lot better. What about a movie with adult Bambi getting the revenge on the hunter who killed his mother by going into a city and manages to kill the hunter's mother, HUH DISNEY?!

Also, I'm not sure if you liked the "There Is Life" or not (wasn't sure if that's what "horrible popish music" was referring to). I haven't seen the movie forever, but I remember really loving that song. Of course, to me, Bambi doesn't really feel right with a regular song, but something that feels like nature is singing (with a bunch of voices). Still, if anyone had to do it, Allison Krauss was the best choice. She has a beautiful voice.

Oh, and I definitely agree that Ronno shouldn't have been in this movie. So bizarre.

Anyway, I always felt Bambi and the Great Prince was one of the best sequels, but--like all their sequels--that's not saying much. Twist in Time is actually one of the better ones, too, especially if you're just look for throw-backs to the original, but I think that's another one where a lot of the characters change.

Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy... This fucking movie...I shouldn't have watched this. I want my wasted hour back that Disney will never get me. My death is one hour earlier because of this piece of shit. What an abomination; a piece of human feces pushed into a DVD disc. I want to kill everyone involved with this movie, everyone, in the fucking credits, and all of their family. I don't give a shit if your name is in the credits and/or you're related to the people involved with this movie, one day...one day I'll be there with a gun in my hand. Offended? You should be, motherfucker. After I saw this movie I went outside and shot my dog, my very best friend ever since I was a child. After that I wrote a fanfic about me raping my dead dog's corpse, and then posted it on Deviantart - it got glowing reviews.

After that I pushed the gun against my head and told myself...I should shoot, but then I realized I had a <i>duty</i> to review this piece of garbage. (More like doody, am I right?) Let's begin...

The Bad:

You know they should've really called this movie Cinderella II: At Least It Isn't As Bad As Miscarriage, but even that I think would be highly debated amongst the greatest of philosophers from world history. If you put Jim Jones and Aristotle in a room and make them watch Cinderella II: Dreams Come True, they would both agree it's shit. If you put Stephen Hawking with a Young Earth Creationist in the room and make them watch Cinderella II: Dreams Come True, they would both agree it's shit. This movie's garbage comes to a full circle in how accepted it is as being the worst sequel ever made by people of all races and beliefs.

Characters - First problem is the goddamn characters. There was three people who wrote this movie: Jill E. Blotevogel, Tom Rogers, Jule Selbo. To all of these people:

Every character in this movie...is awful. Every new character, every old character that is mischaracterized pointlessly, everything, ever forever and ever...and it'll never go away. Jennifer Hale could've gotten more money prostituting her body than voicing Cinderella in this movie. I would know cause I would've PAID HER myself! Cinderella is so bad in this, she's practically turned into this Super Mary Sue character that no one can relate to, not even the little girl audience this is targeted to. On the other side she does make some really cute facial expressions in this movie that make her look quite, uh, delicious...

The mice...are even worse than in the original Cinderella. One of my criticisms of the original movie were the mice, and they're even oh-so more prevalent here. These mice are some of the most elite when it comes to annoying Disney characters; always has and always will be. However this time Disney took liberties in making them even more annoying and more stupid and more pointless than they are in the original movie! This time they provide the main comedy of the movie, causing hijinks all over the place for no real rhyme or reason other than that they're there. They have no reason to be in the plot, and if they did I wouldn't care anyway. I also find it funny how the castle allows mouse holes to rampantly appear all over the place oh-so conveniently. They're trying to kill the things, right? Cover the holes! Set some goddamn mouse traps! Jesus Christ, WHY AREN'T THESE MICE DEAD?!

The Prince...contributes nothing. Anastasia is just as unlikable as the original movie; unfortunately this time you don't love to hate her you hate to hate her. Lady Tremaine doesn't act like she does in the original aside from the fact that she's a mean old lady. The king acts retarded. The new female character Prudence serves as a poor copy for Lady Tremaine. Pom Pom is lame, and what's even worse is that a whole segment she's TRYING TO EAT A HUMAN BEING, what the fuck?! Human!Jaq is even a worse offender to the previous complaint cause he ACTUALLY RUNS AWAY FROM POM POM AND TRIES TO SLIDE INTO A MOUSE HOLE HEAD FIRST!! None of the characters make sense nor are they decent or likable or anything, really.

Music - OH MY GOD, THE MUSIC! God is all of the music in this horrible, like literally the worst music I've ever seen in ANY Disney film. It isn't just "popish," it's badly sang, has no rhythm, and isn't memorable whatsoever. What's worse is that the credits song is a hip-hop style romp for no real reason. I take back what I said about the music in Bambi II and Return to Neverland, this definitely takes the cake for being utterly disgusting and awful to the ears. Don't believe me? Humor - Mygod is the humor bad. Every joke, nothing is funny. I've already mentioned the mice, but did I ever mention the HILARIOUS pudding scene was when it fell on his head? The humor is so bad that I can barely remember this shit...

Boring - This movie is boring as hell, just sayin'. All rage inducing moments, no so-bad-it's-good.

The Good:

There is nothing good about this movie, nothing.

Well, okay, it isn't the worst thing in the world. Top 5, though? Definitely.

Conclusion:

I don't have much to say about this that I haven't already said. Yeah...this movie is bad. From what I hear, it's piecing together episodes from a rejected animated TV series. Thank god it was rejected or we would have to put up with more of this shit. It certainly doesn't compare to the original, which despite having some flaws it's still a fantastic Disney movie. I'm aware that this review is kind of all-over-the-place, but what can I say otherwise about a movie that IS all-over-the-place?

One day when I raise a daughter, when she sees Cinderella II: Dreams Come True and asks me to buy it I'm going to beat the shit out of her. Just kidding...not really.
