This is merely a metaphorical question. Which animated classics would you want to see get an animation makeover (without editing any scenes or altering voices)?

I would vote for some of the Dark Age animation. I like the use of Xerox animation in 101 Dalmatians but it doesn't work half as well in The Aristocats or Oliver and Company. The Aristocats is filled with countless animation errors and poorly cleaned up cells. I would like to see that animation get cleaned up.

Oliver and Company I would like to see get a more realistic look. The character animation isn't bad but the backgrounds are terrible.

Your thoughts please and don't send me to hell for thinking such unpure thoughts about over favorite Disney films.

To be honest, I would like to see a little blood in some of their older movies for a bit more of a realistic effect. For example, in that scene from Oliver & Company when Roscoe and DeSoto beat Dodger up at Syke's warehouse, albeit the scruffy fur, Dodger didn't really look beat up.

I mean, they made Taran bleed a little in The Black Cauldron, and let Ursula get cut by Eric's harpoon, AND they had Beast bleeding when he got wounded by the wolves/Gaston.

Ummm... None of them! They are fine just they way they are, thank you very much!

Only few I can think of:

Sleeping Beauty:
Only change I would give it is to give Aurora and Phillip much better roles and relevance. In the actual one, they hardly have the spotlight and latter half of the movie they don't speak at all. All the attention went towards Malificant vs. 3 fairies.

Black Cauldron:
This movie had great potential. It's a shame it doesn't get recognize or succeed in B.O. What I would do though is make the chronicle of Prydain series a trilogy. I would have Book 1 and 2 combine as first movie(which is what this one was), book 3 as 2nd movie, and 5th book as final movie.

As for change in black cauldron it self, make the characters more likable for mainstream audience. And give the movie something for audience to member about. And give few more characters like Queen Achren, King Smoit, King Morgant-son of Madoc, Kaw, a crow, or Prince Ellidyr.

Make the main villain Arwan, not Horn King.


Robin Hood & Oliver and Company:
I prefer have the cast as Humans.
I personally don't like animal characters as human characters.(though I do like Rita in Oliver and Company)
And with Oliver, make it more like the book as in the setting and etc.

Tangled:
Nothing wrong with it. I just like see the same movie done in 2D animation.

Pretty much this. But I actually like Robin Hood with the animals. Oliver and Company, not so much.

Beauty and the Beast

Both the main characters are off-model in almost every non-musical scene. It was as if there was another girl living in the tower, and the Beast had a younger brother. Even my younger sister pointed that out, which shows even children notice these things.

Basically, I wouldn't mind seeing any ones that were made on a time / budget crunch re-animated. I think I'd like to see "The Sword in the Stone" done with a different animation style. The current film looks aesthetically close to "101 Dalmatians" which worked for that film, but I'd like to see something a little different visually.

Ah yes I figure I forgot something. Sword in the Stone. Seriously that had potential to be an epic Arthurian story but really wasn't. I hate to say this but I like Quest of Camelot better than Sword in the Stone.

Yuh. I don't need a sprawling "Sleeping Beauty" thing, but as it is there's virtually nothing all that special about the movie visually, and it's a shame because that might elevate what I consider to be a mediocre film a few notches in my eyes.

The Black Cauldron: Make it a more attractive epic feature. Better character designs, better art direction, and a better more interesting story. Seems like everything that could've made this film cool was needlessly taken away.

American Dog: Go with the "quirky" version Chris Sanders had in mind. Bolt is not bad, it's just a somewhat generic dog film.

I LOVE Tangled the way it is,but somehow i want to see a 2D version of it.

I think I'd like to see The Little Mermaid in CAPS or Toon Boom. I bet it would look great.

Definitely the backgrounds on Oliver & Company, as they were a tad washed out or rushed. But the animation was fine even for today. I just
thought that they could have done the BGs better, especially when you consider the awesome BGs bookending that movie: Basil and Mermaid...

Agree, although I do like Eliwonry's character design and probably like it to stay.

Personally, I’d vote for Pocahontas, Hunchback, TENG (except for Yzma), and Atlantis. I hate the styles to these films (v. Hercules, Mulan, and Lilo)--I just don’t like the jagged feel, and flatness of the characters. Their animation is fine, but the designs are something I'd like to see change.

Also, I’d love if someone could go back and re-do the 3D parts of Treasure Planet. They look horrible. Either do them better in 3D (a la Tangled) or just make them 2D.

And, of course, I’d like them to re-do all the films that were made in a time-crunch, for more consistency. Personally, I thought Mermaid and B&tB were, for the most part, beautiful, and their flaws are greatly exaggerated (especially someone’s complaints about the “Belle” sequence, which looks absolutely fine to me). But they do have flaws, which could be helped with a little more work on the inbetween scenes.

I actually thought it looked great in CG for the most part, but I would love to have seen it in 2D. Flynn looks great in some of the 2D concept art we’ve seen of him (with more personality), but he’s really bland in the movie. I guess because you can’t really exaggerate the facial expressions in 3D.

I think you mean it's a hypothetical question, but okay, my answer is: none. Films that had poor stories filled with poor characters wouldn't get better with better animation (Aristocats, Home on the Range) and films like The Black Cauldron and The Rescuers have a certain kind of atmosphere that I love, because of the way they were animated. To me, The Rescuers wouldn't work if it had the slick animation of its sequel.

But the whole point of Atlantis' style is to capture the feel of the work of Mike Mignola. And between the animation style and the production design, it really works well. And I like how all those movies took on different styles that really gave them a unique identity.

The only things worth changing to me are the problems concerning off-model characters. Belle in Beauty and the Beast springs to mind, as does The Little Mermaid to a lesser extent; obviously, though, it's the result of budget and time restraints. For similar reasons, I'd also redo some of the background characters in Beauty and the Beast as they can look a bit rushed and dull.

I used to have mixed feelings on the Xerox look (mainly from my days as the typical Disney fanboy who liked fluffy, light, clean animation ), but I've grown really quite warm to it in recent years. I can really see now how the photocopier can capture the vigour and energy of the animator's own drawing and the texture of the pencil. Of course, the hand inked look is wonderful, and the Xerox look worked better for some films over certain others. I would say that The Sword in the Stone is better in terms of style than many others consider, but its style, basically very similar to 101 Dalmatians (jagged lines for both background and character, a similar use of bold colours in distinctive shapes and patterns for backgrounds) simply looks like a contemporary illustration for a medieval story. Contrariwise, the same style in 101 Dalmatians ultimately works better with that film due to its contemporary setting. The only time where I don't think the Xerox process really worked overall, though, is with producing lines other than black. The general effect of thick outlines works in nearly every case better with a bold black, and some of the grey lines used in The Rescuers look a bit drab and ghost-like.

With as much as I've loved how the final film turned out, I'd still like to see just a few scenes of how Tangled would have turned out traditionally animated.

you did actually see Quest for Camelot, right? To say that I think it's awful and stupid would be an understatement. I'll spare you a long review but to make a long story short, it was to me one of the worst theatrically released animated features of all time. But I would love to hear why you think it's better than The Sword in the Stone? A movie I thought was strangely underrated.

I hope you're really just referring to your disappointment with the choice to make the Arthur story a fantasy comedy and not an epic adventure. That is something I can understand. The two headed dragon impersonating elvis was lost on me however. Was that an epic Arthurian element? Was the axe/chicken with no motive or relation to anything making sense... epic?

Sorry for my rambling I just hate that movie so much. I could forgive many of the Disney knock-offs and wannabes of the 90s for being inherently awful like Thumbelina and the likes, but this stinker was just too much.

I agree. Purely out of curiosity. I think it would have been marvelous. Still I would not change Tangled, it is a perfect film.
