Fans, both young and old, have always enjoyed Captain Planet and the Planeteers, and would love to get it on DVD. For instance, last April we reported about an online chat held between members of the Home Theater Forum website and execs from Warner Home Video, where fans got to ask the studio about the possibility of getting their favorite television and animated productions on DVD. This particular show was one which came up (as it had on previous chats), and at the time Warner replied this way: "we're evaluating Captain Planet. We want the power to be YOURS".

And Warner's making it happen, too...but not by themselves. Heroism can take teamwork, and Warner has apparently teamed up with Shout! Factory...at least according to Amazon.com's new pre-order listing for Captain Planet and the Planeteers - Season 1 on DVD! Yes, Amazon shows that Shout! will release the first season set as a 4-disc set on April 19th (just in time for Earth Day), at a cost of $29.93 SRP (but you can lock in your copy at a discount right away with an advance order).

Is this believable? Well, Shout! is the one studio Warner has previously licensed their TV properties out to (Max Headroom and The Norm Show), and Shout! is also known for doing a great job with classic animated shows. We don't have anything official from either studio (Shout! or Warner), however, so we suppose there could be a mistake at Amazon. We'll trust it, though, until and unless we hear otherwise! Stay tuned for updates and package art. In the meantime, the power is yours!

Poised to attract an audience of kids, as well as the parents and educators who grew up with the television series in the 1990s, each episode of Captain Planet and the Planeteers finds the Planeteers on a new quest. Whatever the problem, from garbage dumping to rainforest destruction, the Planeteers are ready to take action. With the aid of rings given to them by Gaia, the Spirit of Earth, they each control one special element of nature - Earth, wind, water, fire and heart. The Planeteers use their powers to take on environmental disasters created by the eco-villains. "You must have faith in yourselves," Gaia tells her newly recruited Planeteers. "You're fighting for the good of the whole world." When the situation becomes critical, they join their powers together to summon Captain Planet.

Captain Planet and the Planeteers work together to prevent the eco-villains from looting and polluting the Earth's resources. Once the problem is under control, Captain Planet returns to the Earth, leaving this message for Planeteers everywhere: "The power is yours!" Each episode ends with a 30-second tag including tips on how people can be a part of the solution.

This acclaimed animated series motivates today's youth to get involved in saving our planet and explores the profound impact of environmental activism, and relating it to issues that face all of us today. Go Planet!

Executive producers of Captain Planet and the Planeteers are Andy Heyward, Robby London, Barbara Pyle and Nick Boxer. The series is directed by Will Meugniot. The idea for Captain Planet was originated by R.E. Turner.

I was in line at Albertson's about a week ago, and they had a bin of $5 movies at the service desk. Some Captain Planet episodes were among them, prompting the lady behind me to start singing the theme song to her husband. Had I known her, I'd have been tempted to join in. :p

Anyway, back to your regularly scheduled thread. ;)

This takes me back to my first year of highschool. Coming home, it was ALL ABOUT "Captain Planet", and "Widget the World-Watcher".

According to the DVD producers, Shout! Factory,
"The surviving masters are on tape. Without the original film elements to transfer to HD, Blu-ray wouldn’t look any better than simply putting your SD DVD into... a Blu-ray player."

I'm glad they addressed this. It saves everyone the headache of wondering if it could have been.

I hate to go off-topic but would anyone know if Hannah-Barbara cartoons of the 60s still have the original film available or not? I was considering picking a couple up (The Jetsons) and wasn't sure. Thanks.
