Stephen Colbert had Stephen Sondheim, the legendary voice of modern musical theater and too many huge masterpieces and classics of it, on his show.

And Colbert jokingly asked Sondheim, "Now, all of these musicals that you wrote, they were originally Disney animations, correct?"

To which Sondheim responded, first with a little laugh, "We would like them to be."

There was talk at some point that "Into the Woods" would be made into an animated movie.

oh god, i saw a production of that show!

I donno, I really don't think that would work. Unless they were going for a way older adult audience.

Well, I did read an interview with Arthur Laurents not too long ago, talking about how Disney had sent him a DVD with an early rendering of a movie to be based on "West Side Story" but featuring cats.

Laurents said that the Maria cat was to be a stowaway from a ship.

Personally, I think it'd be cool to see WDAS take on some Broadway hits. After all, many of the broadway to hollywood films have done fairly well. As for Sondheim though.... imo there really isn't much of his work that could translate very well. A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum might work, but that's all that really does it for me unless Disney did take a more mature route... which is probably unlikely.

I read that too. Talk about Broadway's evil queen. I think there will be dancing in the streets of New York when Laurents finally passes over. BTW - That "West Side Story" idea sounds like something from the Don Bluth/"American Tail" years...
