Do you see this happening in the near future? What do you think the future holds for Brick and Mortar media stores? Are they really starting their demise or digitalization of media just a phase?


Death knell of the brick and mortar bookstore

I really hope not. Digital media is nice and all, but owning a physical copy is just so much better.

Like, the only reason I don't mind buying my music from iTunes now is because I can just copy the songs onto a disc. That way if my computer dies or my account gets screwed up (or whatever- SOMETHING happens to make me lose my digital music and I can't get it back) then I still have the peace of mind knowing that I still have access to that music.

So unless they want to make it easy to burn games and movies to a disc like music too... I'm gonna have to pass on a digital download-only future.

You don't need brick and mortar stores to buy physical media.

This is true. Amazon dose very well selling physical media.

i may love my digital copies, but I do own most dvds/blu rays....especially of shows or movies not on iTunes yet. And this means I do buy from Brick and Mortar stores. I rarely buy movies from Amazon. Sometimes I buy harder to find stuff from Overstock.com (that's where I got Pollyanna (haley mills) from.

Brick and Mortar stores will still be needed for groceries and clothing and other items, so they aren't going away forever. Some people will still own dvds, especially if they don't have iPods.

As much as I love trolling a good record store, hard copy media stores are definitely on the way out. The only places you can get stuff like that now are the big box stores, and they're shrinking the floor space for them quickly.

Physical media still has at least another decade in it, but it'll become specialized like vinyl fairly soon. Movies aren't quite there yet just because there isn't a really good, high quality way of transporting them yet.

And with film, most people seem to be concerned with quality. My biggest problem with digital music is that is sounds terrible. Play an MP3 through a nice set of speakers and it sounds like FM radio.
