OSCAR: Animation Entries Down To Wire; But Will There Be Enough For 5 Nominees?

It looks like we'll be having three nominees this year although there still some time for late entries. There are so far 14 entries and we need 16 in order to have five nominees but the deadline's near. Here's hoping.

Who do you think the nominees will be? Who would you like to win this year's Academy Award?

If there are five nominees I'd like to see:

Toy Story 3
How to Train Your Dragon
Tangled
The Illusionist
My Dog Tulip

I'm not going to vote in the poll just yet, seeing as Megamind, Tangled and The Illusionist haven't been released yet and I really want to see those.

I think there will be five nominees this year. Like the article said, there will likely be a flurry of last-minute entries and there was also the recent ruling that films need to be over 40 minutes to qualify (rather than 70 minutes, like before), so that will help there to be more candidates.

If there is five nominees, I expect the nominees will be:

Toy Story 3
How to Train Your Dragon
Tangled
The Illusionist
Despicable Me

If it's only three, then Toy Story 3, How to Train Your Dragon and Tangled will be the nominees.

For me:

Toy Story 3
How to Train Your Dragon
Tangled
The Illusionist

And the winner.... I'd like Toy Story 3 to win the Best Picture and Tangled the Best Animated Picture, but if I have to be realist, I know Toy Story 3 won't win the Best Picture Oscar and will win the Best Animated Picture.

Sad but true, I don't think any animated picture will be awarded with the Big Oscar ever... I mean, I will love it, but animated pictures are still underrated =(

You mean underrated, right?

The reason an animated film is unlikely to ever win a Best Picture is, in my opinion, the fact that the vast majority of them belong to the "family entertainment" genre. Unless more serious and dramatic films are done in animation, this won't change. We definitely need more diversity in the Hollywood animation industry.

Where is the option 'The Oscars stopped being relevant when Titanic won in 11 categories'?

Is The Secret of Kells not eligible? Anyway I expect Toy Story 3 to win, I would like HTTYD to win though as I, dare I say it, preferred it to TS3.

To be honest, I really hope Toy Story 3 doesn't win

I loved the film, but I don't think the film is as strong as a stand alone film without having viewed the first two movies.

I hope they people who vote take that into consideration and judge it as a singular film and try to imagine the movie without knowing the past adventures and emotions of these characters.

I'm agree with you. But I don't understand why all animated films have to "suffer" the same fate as the others! It can be family entertainment, but, aren't the other films entertainment products too??

It definitely did not deserve to win Best Picture and Best Director but winning the technical categories seemed reasonable to me.

Not all animated films are of the same caliber and are not treated the same by the critics and public alike. That's why most Pixar films gained high critical acclaim and one was even nominated for Best Picture. Nevertheless, even Pixar films do not deviate from the "family" category which provides limitations in creating groundbreaking films.

Joking aside, I think that Toy Story 3 is obviously a shoe-in, and I wouldn't be surprised to see How I Trained Your Dragon or Tangled in the list too. I wouldn't mind Toy Story 3 winning, but I personally voted for Tangled, if only to give WDAS some type of glory.

I definately think Titanic deserved it's Best Picture Oscar. Bottom line about Titanic:

"It should be no surprise then that it became fashionable to bash James Cameron's Titanic at approximately the same time it became clear that this was the planet's favourite film. Ever. Them's the facts."

That said, seeing as Tangled and such hasn't been released yet, I can't say what I think should win yet.

I agree with that; it's beyond silly to vote for a film nobody has even seen yet. Clearly 9 people so far have stopped thinking.

While I think Tangled will leave a considerably favorable impression on audiences and critics alike, I don't think it will win. I read the storybook (bad me ) at the bookstore the other day, and while it is a very engaging story, and Mother Gothel is a terrific villain, I feel like the Academy is going to choose TS3 in the end. This is mainly due to Pixar's current 3 year streak, and I highly doubt that anything will beat TS3 (haven't seen How to Train Your Dragon).

I'd like to know if the ten people who have voted for "Tangled" so far have actually seen the full film? Just saying...

Well, since the question was which one you would like to win and not which one deserves to win or which one is the best one, some people who have not seen it yet might have voted for it for different reasons e.g. Wonderlicious said that he would like for Tangled to win to "give WDAS some type of glory". Also, there have been some advanced screening so maybe a few have seen the film; you cannot completely rule out that possibility.

True, but I've noticed (Amazon.com is great for this) that a lot of people vote for or review films that they have not even see yet! I suppose it is possible for some early screenings, maybe, but we are still many weeks from it being released. It just strikes me as funny, that is all.

I agree, I'd love to see Disney win one, but not for a crappy film. Based on the trailers that I've seen, I worry it may be just that. But, then again, it may end up the best film they have ever made. Won't know till I actually see it, and that is the point. I'm think most or voting here based on desire to see Disney do well and less on the merits of a film that most likely they have not actually seen yet.

That one was nominated for the 2010 Academy Awards MONTHS ago.

Anyways, I know it'll be a no-brainer and Toy Story 3 will likely win. But I would like to see either that, HTTYD or Tangled win.

But I don't think Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue would count as a nominee, mainly b/c it wasn't released theatrically.

I would say either Disney and Pixar's, "Toy Story 3," or DreamWork's Animation's, "How to Train Your Dragon," would likely win for Academy award for best animated picture. I could not stop watching, "HTTYD," it is so cool. I bet I would do the same for, "Toy Story 3." They are truly the top best animated movies this year. Just a thought, what if they end up a tie?
