Wondy presents "ARTWORK!"

I know that this is a shameless thread devoted just to myself, but sometimes being selfish can be fun. ;)

Like a good deal on this forum, I've always enjoyed drawing, painting and what not; it goes hand in hand with being interested in animation and Disney. Unfortunately, I've never had the chance to take any route that could lead me to doing it professionally (well, there have been things majorly blocking the route). Yet practically every day, I'll have to draw at least one thing to get through. On lined paper, with my finger in the shower, whatever. It's what makes me, I suppose. If I were ever to become a professional artist, I'd want to be an illustrator, cartoonist, or work in animation. Most things I do would link to any of these; it's not particularly ambitious, just a reflection of myself and my interests.

I've generally shied away from showing things online, but I've decided to start to loosen up and actually show a few things for the time being. I'll be posting them over at my new blog (don't hate me powers-that-be for being self promotional :p), the address of which is:

http://jarvworld.blogspot.com/

First up is this little sketch, which is used as part of my current avatar.

You'll find the story behind it (or at least some brief context), as well as the original sized image, on my actual blog, where I'll be posting the bulk of my artwork. For the time being

When I first saw your picture in your avatar, I thought it was by someone else. I honestly like your style very much, and think it's very good, and unique. Some things I can say to try and desribe some things I feel about the style is it's rough yet sophisticated and classy, it takes note of...high things. I love the seats, I love the design on them, but most especially the wolf, which is so loose and lively, he seems fun while at the same time scary and evil. That's another thing to describe the style. Loose but not sloppy, though I'm sure you'll get even better as time goes on.

After reading your blog, I see there are not volcanoes out the window (heh...) but smoke stacks from sewage or power plants!

I'm surprised you never told that mother she can't hit her kids, but I always do fear if I say that, she'll get mad at me and hit them more, unless she can't do that, I don't know, I always wonder what I should do in those situations...?

I'm surprised to learn Perrault's version of Ridinghood ends with Red dead! That certainly fits with the original way the story was meant - do not be like Little Red Ridinghood! And I think Perrault's moral for the tale probably gets what the original story's message and metaphors were. Either sex hungry or bad men or raping, molesting strangers can seem nice and charming. And then do you get the whole thing about Red taking off her clothes and getting into bed? I think it was even more suggested in the original tale.

Why do you find the Grimm's version so creepy, though? I'm fine with the Grimm's addition. I personally do like it better because I like how it adds more and I like the characters getting a second chance. I don't see these as just cautionary tales, I care about the characters, too.

OH AND WHAT IS YOUR BIRTHDAY? I'm a Gemini too is why I'm asking.

Righty ho, I've added a few more drawings. Unfortunately, I've not had access to my scanner, so two things I've put up (including one that I'll share on the forum) are actually photographs (not so bad until you consider that my photography skills are, erm, yeah :p). If anybody wants to, they can follow me (I didn't know anybody could, until I randomly saw that our own JC decided to).

Anyway, first comes a Halloween present:

And considering the Disney version has come out on Blu-Ray...

First of all, thanks for the positive response! You're the only one who said owt, so you get a :pink: from me. With Grimm, I understand that there's the idea of second chance, which ultimately makes the story more rewarding and less didactic. But...I don't know...I kinda have this image in my mind of Grandma and Red being covered in blood and goo etc, whereas the idea of having them being killed like any other kind of prey, grizzly as it sounds, seems more naturalistic.

lol, I was perhaps exaggerating. I was on a train full of people, and there were generally quite a few, well, let's say coarse passengers. ;) I kinda felt that intervening would make matters worse (most annoying families just shouted more than anything else, and any hits were more just spanks), so I just rolled my eyes and didn't say anything. I've been in the presence of psychotic mothers and their equally crazy children in the past on many trains, buses, planes, to be fair.

I like your style, too! I'm loving the Aeroplanes picture- it's a great song, and I really, really like the melancholyness of the picture. Love it.

What's a "owt"?

I love your style even more now! You know, it slightly, slightly, slightly reminds me of Roald Dahl's illustrations, but that was mainly from the Aeroplanes picture.

I love the Fish Wife! I am not so sure how I feel on your Beauty and the Beast. Belle seems a little too prim and proper/bookworm smart (I mean...a librarian comes to mind), and the Beast...he's looks like too much like a goat I think. And he's so mean-looking, like he hates so much (not quite the original Beast, though I'm not sure of Villeneuve's original original version ). However, it's your idea, and the style is stil great and I like Belle's costume.

I think the Grimm's addition makes Red Riding Hood even more of a fairy tale. These two eaten people actually survived and made it out fine!

My birthday's June 10, so close...

'Tis dialect! ;)

noun
1. (Northern English dialect) anything
adverb
1. (Northern English dialect) anything
pronoun
1. (Northern English dialect) aught, anything
Etymology: From Äuht, Äuhtes, see aught.

Northern English = English from anywhere in England with "North" applied to it:

(I'm sure most people guessed what "Northern English" meant, but I thought it'd be a good excuse to pull out a map for the hell of it)

Oh. Thanks.

And just to clear things up, I also think your work, though distinct and original and with your own interesting flavor, reminds me of Tim Burton, but really only in the Aeroplanes picture again, I think your photo taking was good (I mean, I can see everything cleary!) and your Beauty and Beast characters did at leats make me interested in how your version of the story would be. Still, the goat thing bothers me...it's probably not even intended to be goat-like either...

Every time someone mentions Northern English, I imagine Ninth Doctor.

"Lots of planets have a North."

I hate to toot my own horn (really, it kills me deep down inside), but I've recently been updating my blog in earnest (six or so posts within one week  ), with a selection of new images. In fact, one of them features in my new avatar, which replaces around a year of Scott Pilgrim. I also changed the design of the blog very slightly, though I doubt that anyone would notice (unless you're really into your fonts). In any case, enjoy!
