I don't rent movies.

This will probably seem strange to most of you, but I don't rent movies (or use PPV or Netflix or anything similar) anymore. Here's the deal: I have Dish Network, with all the premium channels (HBO, Showtime, Starz, etc.). So, if I don't feel strongly enough about a movie to see it in theatres or buy it on DVD, then I can wait another six months or so after the DVD release date, and watch it on satellite. I'm paying for Dish anyway, so I don't really see the need to pay to rent movies too. The only exception is movies that won't come to the premium channels, like the DTV DC animated movies that have been released over the last few years.

So, is anyone else here in the ex-renters category? Or am I the lone fruitcake?

Not a whole lot. Mostly the Disney movies that I would want to watch a million times and see all the extras for. The animated movies and the "tentpole" live-action films.

Don't feel too surprised, Disneyphile. Many people don't rent movies (or games for that matter), however your reason for is makes sense. I know people who don't rent movies out of sheer paranoia or suffer from some sort of OCD and must buy EVERY movie they see. Not rent, BUY.

It depends on the person and the situation they are in. In my case, I live in a town that has no movie theater, I am unemployed and thus can't afford to go to the movies nor buy DVDs, so renting is the best option.

Beat up discs and poor selection are the main reasons I don't bother with video rental stores anymore.

Renting movies off the itunes store is different. There I don't have to worry those two reasons or "queues" for titles, plus the period I have the movie is fairly long (30 days before clicking "play" and 48 hours after that) and the price is low (usually $4, can be as low as $0.99).

TCM also helps me to avoid the rental process.

I rent movies...for free from the library or for 79 cents from Drug Mart. I used to have premium channels but then I realized that they're a big F***ing rip-off. You would pay $40 a month to have one or two new movies you actually want to watch, months after they came out on DVD/Blu-ray, only to have to adhere to their scheduling. I can rent as many Blu-rays as I want when they premier (not months after), watch them whenever I want, and keep my $40. Since we pay for this through taxes, you might as well take advantage of it. Even renting from Drug Mart I would have to rent over 40 new Blu-rays a month to be paying as much as I did for premium. As for when I'm not renting, I never buy movies unless I know I like them and I hardly ever see movies in theaters unless I REALLY want to see them.

Same reason I use netflix. The discs are always in pristine working condition.

Very few movies I have to wait more than a couple days for.

I've had some strange experiences when I went to video rental stores, and I generally avoid them.

We don't have premium channels, and with many new movies of the past 5 or 6 years, I'm not inclined to see them anyway so I don't mind waiting for them on basic cable. The ones that I want to see, I generally blindbuy about six months after it's on DVD (because by then the prices are down). I know there's a better chance I'll like it rather than dislike it.

Our local library has movies to rent, but I always try and make sure they're new movies (new to disc, not new in recent years), as the older ones have been checked out many times and some people simply don't know how to handle the discs.

The only time I ever really rent a movie (which is rare nowadays) is if it's a new release. I really do not like renting DVDs much in fear of getting a badly scratched disc, hence why I usually buy movies I want to see(if they are at a good price, that is).

We have the best Digital Cable Network here in Kansas, Cox Communications and with it we have On Demand which gives us the opportunity to watch movies the same day they are released on DVD (for $4.99 for 24 hours) or we have access to Epix Movie Channel which seems to have the newer movies sooner than any other premium channel. My favorite find is VutopiaHD and they have a catalogue of movies (for free!!!) that can't be beat anywhere, and it changes pretty regularly. They have several categories like Westerns. Comedies, Drama, Sci-Fi/Horror, and Documentary.

On Demand has several offerings, I can watch any of my network shows the day after they air for free, and they have over 500 movie titles that can be watched for free as well as a Classics Movie channel where you can pay up to .99 cents per 24 hour period to watch a movie, most are only .49 cents.

On Demand is the perfect source to watch just about anything you want to watch including the Disney Family Channel which features all-Disney movies for a monthly fee of $9.99.

There is something for everyone. Personally, if I don't see a movie at least twice in the theater, I probably am not going to buy it because I might not watch it more than once in the period of time that I own it.

I was turned off of renting because the movies, from tapes to discs, were always so beat up. I HATE when a movie stops playing partway through, leaving me hanging! Also hate having to worry about returning stuff. I totally stopped renting. Besides, I can go to Big Lots and buy movies for the same price as renting. I would rather own something for my money. If there's something I want to see but didn't see in theaters, I usually will wait till it's on TV or I'll buy it myself if there's a good deal on it. I do blind buy movies a lot at Big Lots. Besides that, I only occasionally blind buy movies, unless they're Disney since I collect those, or something else I am probably going to like that is at a great price. I wouldn't be opposed to having Netflix on my PS3 someday though, as my friend has it and it's pretty sweet when we go over there on Friday nights. However, it would depend on the cost.
