Disney's Making Of VHSes

After a day of classes at campus, I decided to hit up the local GoodWill on the way home. As per usual, I went through the tapes section to find some old videos to either purchase or get my nostalgic. Today especially seemed like a good one for me in the purchasing department.

Besides an old Looney Tunes tape released with some of the cartoons Tuner owned from the early 1990s(there were a couple more Looney tapes with Warner's cartoons that I'll have to consider getting later), I found two mint- unopened tapes released by Disney: The Making of Pocahontas and The Making of Cinderella.

I have never seen these tapes before and I am exactly not sure when they were made. I would assume 1995, since that was when Pocahontas was released and Cinderella was put out on VHS. Weird that I don't recall these being made, because even at a young age, I was interested in the production side of animation and film in general. I am also not sure what else the material for these videos were used in, if they were Laserdisc extras that were put out on seperate VHSes, Disney Channel specials on home release, bonus tapes put out alongside the movie's own releases, or what. I also don't know if I can see either of these specials on these movie's DVDs, since I don't own either one.

Can someone here tell me more about these videos? Are they worth opening up to watch, or should I keep them in their packaging? Can I get them on their DVDs? Were there any other videos made in this format to look out for?

Thanks in advance if anyone has any information on these tapes.

aside from the barebones vhs and laserdisc,disney, i believe, came up with two exclusive editions of pocahontas,..a box set on LD and a special vhs boxset with the extra making of vhs u mentioned. i wonder if the making contains the david odgen stiers hosted video. i believe thats more in depth than the irene bedard one currently available on dvd. if u find no use for it.perhaps u can buy it for me? im a collector of all things pocahontas. :)

"The Making of Pocahontas" is the Disney Channel special hosted by Irene Bedard from 1995. It got carried over to laserdisc and later to DVD, so if you buy the 10th Anniversary Edition DVD, you'll have this.

"The Making of Cinderella" is a documentary made exclusively for the laserdisc and for a special VHS gift set bundle. Some of the interview snippets (such as Ilene Woods and the Nine Old Men) were edited into the new Platinum Edition documentary. I haven't seen the 1995 documentary for myself, so I can't say how it compares to the 2005 one. It's roughly the same length (about 35 minutes based on what the back of the laserdisc cover says).

From what I understand, Disney did VHS giftsets that contained one tape for the film and one tape for bonus material for:

* Beauty and the Beast (contained TV special and Work-in-Progress version)
* Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (contained new documentary)
* The Lion King (contained TV special)
* Cinderella (contained new documentary)
* Pocahontas (contained TV special)

There's probably a few more, but these are what I could easily find on ebay.

I didn't know he hosted a Pocahontas "making of." When and where was this? I'm only aware of him hosting the Beauty and the Beast TV special from 1991.

Interesting. Thanks for the info. I was going to buy the Pocahontas DVD in the near future, so I'll definitely keep that one open. I was waiting for Cinderella's inevitable rerelease, but either way, I'll leave my tapes in mint condition.

Awesome, I'll have to look out for those. I wouldn't be surprised if The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, and Hunchback of Notre Dame had their own bonus tapes as well, since they also had specials made. I will have to keep an eye on these, as well as others that were made.

its the version shown on our local tv. maybe its for international broadcast? it was done in a studio decorated with large hanging stills from the film, a maquette of pocahontas etc...kinda like the set of vanessa william's 'PATF disney song legacy something special' that was shown last year. i have it recorded on video somewhere.dunno if its still playable. i thought the irene bedard making of is retailer's exclusive?

You are of a certain ethnicity he might be, your name sounds like his kind of name, you both love Sleeping Beauty and Pocahontas for their art and do your own art...

Yep. There was an extra tape. I wonder why the US version didn't have that.

does anyone have any pictures of any of these extre VHS's? I've never seen any of the ones discussed except for the Cinderella one. I'd love to know what they look like.
