When a new Criterion Collection BD/DVD comes out, how much cheaper than the SRP are they in stores? What about on release day/week?

Since I just found out one I want is being released and I never bought one one one release day/week I'm a bit curious. Thanks.

Not too many of the big stores (Target, Wal-Mart) carry many Criterion Collection releases as far as I know. Those that do, like Best Buy and Barnes & Noble, aren't as likely to offer major discounts. I'd wager that Amazon and Criterion's website are among your best bets.

Best Buy often sells the Criterions at a bit below retail, depending on the disc. They don't often go on sale, however. Depending on the film, you MIGHT find a couple of Criterions at Wal-Mart, but dont' count on it.

Barnes and Noble usually is full retail, but every now and then they have sales on the Criterions, like Buy 1, Get 1 50% off or something.

Borders is about the same as Barnes & Noble, and both stores (depending on the price of the disc) might have a 10-20% discount sticker on the disc, and if you are a member of their saving club, you will get another 10%.

Also, DVDPlanet.com sometimes has sales on Criterions. If nothing else, Deepdiscount.com has pretty good prices on ALL DVDs they sell, and they have a sale once or twice a year where you take another 20% off their prices (although some things might get jacked up a bit before the sale.)

Of course, that Criterion page you linked to shows that they've got a discount for pre-ordering.

Barnes & Noble is having their 50% off Criterion sale throughout November, and this includes new releases. So you can get Modern Times for either $14.99 (DVD) or $19.99 (Blu-Ray) when November 16 arrives.

Ironically, I found out about this sale today, and a few days ago I had already paid $22.99 each for used Blu-Rays of The Red Shoes and Black Narcissus. I already opened them too (I was eager to watch a P&P film in hi-def), so I can't return them. Oh well, they're worth the extra $3 anyway.

I'm going to my B&N tomorrow to pick up Heaven Can Wait as it looks like it's gone out of print. It's a Gene Tierney title I still need to get (I've unfortunately been slacking on picking up the ones I don't have, though my Audrey Hepburn and Rita Hayworth collections are near-complete). If my B&N had Night and the City, I'd get that too, but I'll likely have to order that online.

You're welcome, Iceflash. Also, I was wrong earlier. It's not the entire month of November, it's only up until November 21. So make sure you pick up Modern Times before that date.
