BURBANK, CA, September 2010 - Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment proudly announces the highly-anticipated debut of The Golden Girls: 25th Anniversary Complete Collection, on DVD November 9. Seven years of laughter, tears, friendship and fun culminate in this limited edition 21-disc commemorative set that allows fans to relive all the great moments of one of TV's most beloved shows in one side-splitting new collection. Packaged in a fantastic, collectible replica of Golden Girl Sophia's wicker purse, the fabulous new release includes every hilarious DVD bonus feature from each season, and other collectibles including all-new character-themed playing cards, showcasing each of the show's lovable, off-beat stars.

The Golden Girls, which originally aired from 1985 through 1992, follows four friends - the smart Dorothy (Beatrice Arthur), naïve Rose (Betty White), vivacious Blanche (Rue McClanahan) and sarcastic Sophia (Estelle Getty) - who move in together in Miami. Their uproarious relationships with each other and the comical men in their lives have made The Golden Girls hugely popular with fans of all ages. These four mismatched, outrageous women certainly give 'Grandma' a whole new meaning, keeping audiences laughing with their endearing friendships and delightful chemistry.

Releasing just in time for the holidays, The Golden Girls: 25th Anniversary Complete Collection allows the legion of fans to relive great moments including Sophia's hysterical run-in with the Pope; Dorothy being wooed by the one-and-only Sonny Bono; Rose trying out sky-diving to snag a guy; Blanche mistaking menopause for pregnancy, and so much more! The series includes a who's who of fantastic guest stars including Burt Reynolds, Leslie Nielsen, Merv Griffin, Alex Trebek Sonny Bono, Debbie Reynolds, Jeffrey Tambor, Peter Graves and even a young George Clooney (as a Miami cop who saves the day)!

Hilarious bonus materials include:
• Thank You For Being A Friend - A look back with The Golden Girls
• Go For The Gold Trivia Challenge
• Golden Moments - The biggest laughs collected in a hilarious compilation
The Golden Girls Scrapbook - Each Golden Girl's funniest moments
• Exclusive Insights And Commentaries With Bea Arthur, Rue McClanahan And Betty White
• Fashion Commentary - Joan and Melissa Rivers provide their own unique brand of fashion critique in a hilarious featurette that pays tribute to the crazy, kitschy wardrobes of The Golden Girls

All four women won Emmy Awards for their roles - bringing the show's Emmy total to eleven. This made The Golden Girls one of only three sitcoms in history in which all main actors won at least one Emmy. Betty White - who has become cultural phenomenon this year - went on to win another Emmy for hosting Saturday Night Live in 2010. The beloved series features the talents of Marc Cherry (creator of Desperate Housewives), who served as a writer and producer.

The perfect holiday gift, The Golden Girls: 25th Anniversary Complete Collection is priced at $149.99 SRP (US) and $175.00 SRP (CAN).

The UD/DVDizzy Front Page is reporting...
  • August 6, 2010 - Disney appears to be warming to complete TV series DVD releases. Following the upcoming sets for "Scrubs" and "Lost", the studio is gathering the seven seasons of "The Golden Girls" in The 25th Anniversary Complete Collection ($149.99 SRP). I'm so excited! It'll likely just be the season set discs in new packaging, but anything to keep "The Golden Girls" on store shelves available to the public!

I already have the season sets, but I'd definitely pick this up if it offered some changes from the season sets, namely the chance to fix a few mistakes:

-Offer the original broadcast episodes for the handful of syndicated episodes that were used in the DVD sets for Seasons 3 and 5. And make sure all the hourlong episodes are in the original broadcast form, not the two-part syndicated one (the only one that is presented in syndicated form is Season 5's "The President's Coming! The President's Coming!")

-Fix whatever the matting problem was on some of the episodes in Season 7.

-Re-author the discs to be 4 discs per season instead of 3 discs, and including all seven seasons in their original Dolby Stereo.

In addition, while I'm still dreaming, I'd like the following to be added as well on a few bonus discs, if Disney/Touchstone can pull it off between now and November...

-Through a special licence with Warner Bros., include all four "Intimate Portrait" episodes focusing on the Girls.

-Record additional commentaries with members of the crew (Susan Harris, Tony Thomas, Paul Junger Witt, Terry Hughes, Marc Cherry, Tracy Gamble, etc.)

-Create a new documentary that covers the making of all seven seasons (reflecting on stuff like casting, background, media coverage, reviews, fandom, story ideas for seasons, etc.), using archival interviews with cast members who passed away, and new/archival interviews with everyone else (surviving cast, crew, notable recurring/guest stars).

-Include "Golden Girls"-related excerpts from the Archive of American Television's interviews with Bea Arthur, Rue McClanahan, and Betty White.

-Include the full hourlong panel session from the 2006 William S. Paley Television Festival.

-Include Lifetime's "The Golden Girls: Their Greatest Moments", as well as an extended gag reel.

-Include longer excerpts from the 1988 Royal Variety Performance, portions of which were seen in "Their Greatest Moments"

-Include the 1996 MTV Movie Awards Clueless spoof with Estelle Getty, Rue McClanahan, and Betty White.

-Include "Here We Go Again" from "The John Larroquette Show", in which Estelle Getty, Rue McClanahan, and Betty White appear as themselves traveling in a "Golden Girls Revue", with John Larroquette standing in for Bea Arthur.

-Release "The Golden Palace" separately as a companion to this set, including extras such as a half-hour documentary about the single-season spin-off series, solo interviews with Don Cheadle, Cheech Marin, & Billy L. Sullivan, and commentaries with cast/crew.

-Release "Empty Nest" and "Nurses" separately as companions to this set, including extras such as documentaries, cast interviews, and commentaries.

I bet Disney has already printed out this thread and is getting on these ASAP! It could happen!

For some reason I still haven't gotten around to buying the last season, though I have 1-6. These are undoubtedly just the current discs repackaged, so I'll be skipping this. If this included even half of Albert's list, I'd gladly double dip, but Disney doesn't care enough about this show to do that. I'm not too fond of the Sophia's purse casing, either. If anything, a case that looks like a giant cheesecake would be more appropriate...

Wonder if they ever will release the spin-off "The Golden Palace" :?:

So Glad I held off buying the box-sets individually.

I have never seen this show before, is it good? I trust the members here when it comes to DVDs over anyone.

If it is, I may consider splurging on this.

Is it good?

This question shouldn't have to be answered.

TGG is possibly the best sitcom EVER!

I hope so! The problem though, as Kelvin already pointed out, is that BVHE likely isn't too interested in putting any more effort than they already have (repackage existing discs with non-DVD gubbins). But surely they could at least add one more disc to be a boxset-exclusive, giving more reason to want to buy the set (plus making it an even 22 discs in the set...or retaining the odd 23 for those of us with the "Intimate Portrait" DVD).

Of the things on my list, the three that would be easiest to include would be the Lifetime special (as it's a Lifetime production, so they should easily be able to get the rights as they partially own Lifetime), the Archive of American Television interviews (as those are stipulated to be available free of charge for anyone to use - as evident by another company included AoAT interviews for the "Cagney & Lacey: The Menopause Years" DVD boxset), and the 2006 panel discussion as they already included 1/3 of it in Season 6.

I agree with Kelvin, I'm not too fond of the Sophia Purse packaging, simply because it looks to be more of a cheap cardboard replica than a working replica (like how Sony's "I Dream of Jeannie" Complete Series is a cardboard bottle-looking package in a box rather than a bottle proper). A box of cheesecake would be hilarious, and would be my ideal choice for what to package the series in.

Coolmanio, they currently air "The Golden Girls" on Hallmark Channel and WEtv (usually one or two-hour blocks), though the episodes there are the cut-for-syndication versions. But they should still give you enough of an idea of what the series is. Highly recommended.

Well, this is kinda good news- considering that I haven't bought any of the single-season sets.

But that price is so... high. Maybe time will dust a few dozen bucks of that final total...

^I agree the price point is way high. With all seasons being found new for $10-$15 each at Wal-Mart and Target, it is at least $45 over buying them separately.

I'm also not sure why they waited so long considering there will be zero changes to the disc from what is already out there. Most shows release the series set along with the last season.

To answer the above question:

They never intended on releasing this, but with the Betty White craze ongoing it is an easy way for them to cash in.

It's just too bad the other girls aren't still with us to celebrate this release and maybe add some content to it.

Yep...that's the reason...and we have NBC to thank for it ultimatley sorta....I've heard that old trends bounce back into popularity but Didn't I didn't realize that went for everything or to this extreme....Betty White is truly...a one of a kind that if we had more of this world wouldn't be as crazy

Betty White for PRESIDENT 2012 :D

Gorgeous show, wish they'd release it in region 2, I own a region free player but the audio sucks

Sophia and Dorothy always blew me away with their banter and I believe Blanche is another word for promiscuous :D

Anyone that has not seen this show have missed the better part of the nineties

Updated first post with press release, courtesy of TVShowsonDVD.com

The press release doesn't mention "The Top Ten Guest Stars of Season 4" (Season 4 DVD) or "The Golden Girls at The William S. Paley Television Festival" (Season 6 DVD), though I'm sure they're included.

Once I saw the wicker purse replica, I just knew this had to be one of Escapay's joke threads.

But the comments made me realize this is real. :? Go figure.
