Until just recently, I had no real interest in buying Disney DVDs... especially considering that I own almost every animated Disney movie before 1999 on VHS.

Unfortunately, when I did "get into the game," a ton of DVDs have gone out of print (in classic Disney fashion), but I've had a surprising amount of luck picking up the ones that I want so far.

I bought a brand new copy of the Walt Disney Ultimate Treasure Chest on Ebay for $133 (mind telling me what the retail price was? <_<)...

... and I just found out that the local Disney store has about 8 copies of the platinum/collectors/masterpiece/whatever edition of 'Beauty and the Beast.' I'm psyched.

So my question is this: What benefit IS there economically for Disney's "vault" plan on home video release? I know that it builds demand over periods of time, but doesn't inavailability force people to buy preowned, thereby leaving Disney without a scrap of profit?

Well it also creates a mindset of "There's a Disney movie on the store shelf...if I pass on it now, I might not have another chance to get it." And so, a consideration becomes a purchase, or a future release gets additional notice. Extended moratoriums would seem to be counterproductive, but nonetheless, Disney must be pleased with them to some degree, to still have 5-year moratoriums part of their home video plans.

Another thing to consider, though it might not make much of a dent, is that some people will stock up on them and seek to make a profit once they go out of print. All those copies are purchased through Disney, even if they'll ultimately go to someone else, and the reseller makes a nice chunk of money. Disney's getting the same amount they would if the person who bought it off eBay/Half just bought originally from them. This obviously doesn't apply to used copies. But then people selling used copies either don't like the movies (inconceivable!) or have gotten additional copies.

Didn't Disney shorten the moratorium from ten years to five years. I read that somewhere. I forget where though. One of the reasons that some people find OOP Disney DVDs on store shelves is that stores want to get rid of remaining stock. Sometimes there's even price reductions to get rid of them (for lack of a better word).

you read it on this site. But I thinkp that was just about Platnium DVD's.

I am looking for the Disney treasures. They are extremelly hard to find! and when i do find them they are very expensive. Does anybody know where i can get them at a reasonable price?

Disney Movie Club. They have them all, including tins, for
Wave 1 (4-pack) $119.80
Wave 2 (3-pack) $99.00

SofaKing - Costco has all seven without the tins for a very reasonable price. Personally, I do not think the tins matter.

you can try your luck at b&m stores to see if they have any of the recently pulled dvd's in stock. otherwise, you might have to resort to ebay where you can buy it for a much inflated price. otherwise, if you're looking for platinum series dvd's just wait 5(?) years (i'm probably going to wait till 2006 to get snow white since i missed that one). also, i'm not sure if the ME go OOP..... if anyone could clear that up, it'd be much appreciated.

edit: since disney and pixar have parted ways, is there any chance of a re-release of toy story and toy story 2 as ME's? cuz i don't really feel like shelling out $80 to get a USED toy story ultimate dvd box set....

Just as an FYI, I just saw Snow White AND Toy Story 2 this last weekend at my local FYE. The only down side is that they charge full retail. I'd be happy to pick it up for anyone who's interested. Also, they had Beauty & The Beast, Little Mermaid II. Unfortunately, I took the last copies of Tarzan, Pinocchio, and Toy Story 1 for myself!
