Nickelodeon Greenlights New Series From the Creators of the Animated Television Hit Avatar: The Last Airbender

The Legend of Korra takes place 70 years after the events of Avatar: The Last Airbender and follows the adventures of the Avatar after Aang – a passionate, rebellious, and fearless teenaged girl from the Southern Water Tribe named Korra. With three of the four elements under her belt (Earth, Water, and Fire), Korra seeks to master the final element, Air. Her quest leads her to the epicenter of the modern "Avatar" world, Republic City – a metropolis that is fueled by steampunk technology. It is a virtual melting pot where benders and non-benders from all nations live and thrive. However, Korra discovers that Republic City is plagued by crime as well as a growing anti-bending revolution that threatens to rip it apart. Under the tutelage of Aang's son, Tenzin, Korra begins her airbending training while dealing with the dangers at large.

Hmmzz...I've heard rumors about this before. So I guess, now it's official.

Don't know what to think of it.

I really liked The Last Airbender and can't wait to see the movies, but I don't know if they should continue the show in some way. Plus, a "hot-headed girl"....I mean, weren't they all hot-headed in TLA? Katara, Toph, Sukki, Azula...etc...

So, is Aangs son also Katara's son? Nah...just leave that universe alone. Start a whole new show, without mentioning TLA or characters from that show. Just my opinion.

So you didn’t follow the casting controversy about the movie version of “The Last Airbender”?

Konietzko: We didn’t head up that film. We’re just happy to be back generating the original content in this mythology, which is what we do.

Translation: Shut the hell up, we hate it but can't say anything derogatory that could possibly hurt box-office performance while we're under contract. Just ignore it like us as it will likely fade away.

OK, feature animation sounds great. You hear that Nickelodeon Movies, if you want to make something animated that doesn't suck, give these guys a shot.

Anyways, everything that's been said seems to add up. There was rumors after Avatar: The Last Airbender ended that they planned to make 3 television movies based on the show and a mini-series spin-off. This is our mini-series spin-off, which I gather will probably only be one season long (considering she only needs to learn one element). I'm excited, especially since they said they're taking a more mature direction (while still balancing humor with seriousness).

Humm...it seems Nick wants to turn this in to a full on franchise, I'm not surprised.

Nickelodeon announced this morning that it has given the green light to "The Legend of Korra," from "Avatar: The Last Airbender" series creators Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko:

Nickelodeon, the number one producer of television animation in the world, has greenlit a new series from the creators of the hit animated TV show Avatar: The Last Airbender, it was announced today by Brown Johnson, President, Animation, Nickelodeon and MTVN Kids and Family Group. The new series The Legend of Korra (working title), from creators Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, will premiere on Nickelodeon in 2011, continuing the evolution of the animated franchise and its mythology. The original series was the inspiration for the Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies live-action epic adventure, The Last Airbender, which has already grossed more than $115 million at the box office to date.

Launched in February 2005, Avatar aired for three seasons on Nickelodeon and was ranked among the top five animated properties on television among boys, 2-11 and 6-11 (2005/2006). During this time, the series reached a total of 21.7 million total viewers (persons 2+), including 8.8 million kids 2-11 and 6.3 million kids 6-11*. Avatar: The Last Airbender was created and executive produced by Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko.

An award-winning filmmaker, DiMartino was a director at Film Roman for six years, working on the prime-time animated series King of the Hill, Family Guy and Mission Hill. During his tenure there, DiMartino animated and directed the short animated film Atomic Love, which has gone on to screen at festivals across the country including Sundance and the Los Angeles Film Festival. It also aired as part of the Nicktoons Network Animation Festival.

Konietzko began his career in animation as a character designer at Film Roman for Fox's prime-time series, Family Guy. He soon moved to the post of assistant director for two more Film Roman shows, Mission Hill and King of the Hill, working beside animation director DiMartino. Konietzko then became a storyboard artist and later an art director for the Nickelodeon animated series Invader Zim.

The new Avatar series will be produced at the Nickelodeon Animation Studios in Burbank, Calif., and is co-executive produced by Joaquim Dos Santos.

If Tenzin is Aang’s son, who is his mother?

So I guess some characters will make cameo appearances?

I love it! I hope it is still funny like the Avatar series. I hated the ending of the show though

The creators knew how to make a great show, just not a great ending. They didn't even show Zuko's mother!

YES!! I hated it too. I watched it with my two younger cousins, who thought it was awesome and cheered a lot, but I thought the whole ending was a letdown. I think the show's highest point was the Book 2 finale. Why couldn't they have managed something like that for the end?

Yeah yeah yeah!! The second season finale was epic on every level! The earth kingdom fell, the amazing battle between katara, azula, zuko, and aang, the capture of iroh, aang being nearly killed!! I was great!

Season three just felt rushed. Like: Oh thanks turtle now i can take away bending! I did like when Aang was using all four elements at once! My brother and i were in my room all excited and annoyed by the commercials haha

Well, I don't know if anyone has seen them yet but the opening to this show and a clip have been posted online (and then quickly taken down). I saved them but I'm not going to post them online as Viacom is taking them down within hours. If you google search, I'm sure you can find them in some form, although they may be mirrored.

My thoughts: J.K. Simmons is much more subdued as Tenzin then I thought he would be (his Spider-Man role is partially to blame for that) and I'm glad is says Avatar: The Legend of Korra as opposed to The Last Airbender: The Legend of Korra (makes more sense, since she's not the last airbender, but she is an avatar). So let's bring it on Nickelodeon. This guy has the whole first episode for review and yet you still haven't given us a premier date, come on.

Aside from finding out what happened to Zuko's mother, what would a fourth season be about, anyway? Aang mastered all of the elements, brought balance back to the Four Nations and he and Katara got together, so his story is done. I like that for this new show, they're concentrating on all new characters and a whole new scenario. Though maybe they will do an episode revolving around what happened to Fire Lord Zuko's mother, thus tying up that one loose end.

Ooh, I didn't realize you finally saw the original show, estefan. What did you think of it?

Yep, took me a long while to finally get around to it, but I eventually did a couple of months and I absolutely loved it. It really hit on whole cylinders for me. The mythology was fascinating, the characters were all fantastically written and well-rounded, I really got into the whole arc of the entire series, the action was delivered perfectly and I liked the risks it took. Considering this is a show on Nickelodeon, I was very surprised and greatly pleased by the roads it took. Just a wonderfully compelling and exciting story.

Glad to hear that. The show is one of my favorites. Mako as Iroh is one of my favorite performances of any sort from the last decade.

By the way, your video on Phineas & Ferb, as well as listening to "Summer Belongs to You", jump started my like of that show, so thanks for that.

And Iroh is my favourite character on the show. At first, it was Sokka, then I gravitated towards Zuko, but by the end, Iroh became my favourite.
