Even though there was no damage and no loss of life, EVERYONE is scared sh*tless! I felt it and my whole room shook like crazy! My mother, who is still recovering from surgery, got very, very scared and started calling everyone we knew and contacting everyone on Facebook.

The good news is that there isn't any tsunami threats and no other quakes (God willing) are expected (and if they do, it will be smaller or just the same magnitude).

The scare was definitely far more damaging than the quake itself, but this was the first time in over a hundred years since the island has felt a quake so strong.

Things have significantly calmed down, with all stations going back to regular programming.

Needless to say, this is going to be THE hot topic for the rest of the week. Even though for months, especially after the Haiti disaster, everyone has gone to great efforts to educate the masses. Yet, this proved to me that people are so busy glorifying the events (creating conspiracy theories and the like) and no critical thinking was put at play.

I am also worried in how the media is going to handle the news. If there's one thing that I learned from the Swine Flu fiasco is that the media will constantly haunt us about the dangers and keep us on high alert, even though the chances of another earthquake happening are low.

The face my mother had after the quick tremor was over was far more terrifying than the earthquake himself, and convinced me that we are indeed living in a society ruled by fear rather than rational thinking.

To me at least this event proves that the one thing far more damaging than the disasters are one's own fears before, during and after it.
