I'd just like to give Luke a

Thank you for the encouraging animations! I hope you're not alone in liking these. It is quite the undertaking.

These are great overviews, Luke! Although I think, based on your review of
The Broadway Melody, this will suffice for my viewing of that story:
<param name="movie" value="
http://www.youtube.com/v/spGIb9XljmI&hl ... ram><embed src="

Out of the list of winning films, I've seen 10 or 11, and partially seen 5 or 6 (I don't remember if I watched all of
Chicago). And a lot of these titles are ones that I'd like to eventually see. Maybe if I kept my Netflix subscription, I would be more inclined to watch more of these. I think that a list like this would be of interest to film students- just reading through these, I'm remembering names that we learned about in my film classes.
I definitely can't wait to read more of these! Great job!

I agree with Wire Hanger and Ames. The BP reviews are very good. Of the first five, I've got
The Broadway Melody and
Grand Hotel on DVD, and I'm sure I've watched
Wings on TCM once (possibly on a Silent Sunday programming), though I'll have to revisit it (well, if Paramount ever puts it on DVD

).
I actually like
Broadway Melody for all its hokeyness. It's easily one of the "least greatest" movies ever given the Oscar for Best Picture, but there's a certain charm to it. Paper-thin story with barely-conceived characters, but some damn fine songs. The later films in the series are better (
Broadway Melody of 1936 is probably my favourite of all four "Broadway Melody" films), though just as dated.

Thanks for the comments. There is so little modern-day reaction to these films out there that I'm curious to hear what people think of them. Five more articles have been added here, including one on The Hurt Locker (color screencaps!):

I'm thinking I've got to pick up the pace if I want to make the one year deadline. To that end, there are three or four winners I'm expecting to catch in the next week or so, including one of the missing pieces (the still VHS-only Cavalcade).

Great job with the reviews, Luke! Are you going to work backwards with the films, so that eventually they'll collide in the middle? Like when you review around Gone With the Wind, you'll start Slumdog?

Thanks! No, I'm going to keep doing it chronologically. I just needed to see The Hurt Locker and I figured I might as well cover that now while it's fresh in mind. Slumdog will be last, which is nice because I know I really like it and I have been itching to see it again since theaters, which will make it a nice, rewarding culmination. (At least until like a month later when the 83rd winner is announced and I'll no doubt be compelled to give it similar treatment.) There will be still be a little bouncing around, with the two VHS titles yet to come, but beyond them, I foresee both the viewing and the writing going pretty much in order henceforth.

Just thought I'd say that I think this is a really cool, exciting project for UD/DVDizzy. Not only will it give us something new to read on a regular basis for the rest of 2010 (and into 2011), but it will be a neat permanent fixture on the site after that too. I'm really enjoying all of the articles so far!
