ET breaks news that actress Dixie Carter, best known for her role as Julia Sugarbaker on the hit sitcom "Designing Women," has died. She was 70 years old.

"This has been a terrible blow to our family," her husband Hal Holbrook tells ET. "We would appreciate everyone understanding that this is a private family tragedy. Thank you."

In addition to Holbrook, her husband of nearly 26 years, the actress is survived by her two daughters Mary Dixie and Ginna.

Oh no.

Rest in Peace, Dixie. You always were my favorite Designing Woman.

Yes, I heard about this last night before I went to bed. It was shown on the bottom strip of the screen on CNN. I was so sad--what a thing to hear before going to bed. Besides the fact that she was an incredible actress, I was kind of hoping that maybe someday she would return on DH for at least a cameo (the character never did die, and I thought it would be interesting if that played into the final episodes whenever the show ended). She did such a good job on the show. Ah well.

I also saw that clip in TVSquad's tribute to Carter. The episode where she keeps running into the porn stand is also hilarious, and a good showcase of her talent. Interestingly, I actually read that she was the complete opposite of Julia (politically speaking), and it's to her credit that she could play the character so well.

But I think my favorite moment Dixie Carter had on that show was when her house was opened to a tour and she told off the woman trying to stereotype the South for publicity's sake. It never fails to make me laugh hysterically.

I wish they didn't separate them but, eh, whaddya gon do?


She looked amazing too. I'll never forget how incredible she was as an actress because of that show. Did she ever get any serious credit in comedy when they would go over funniest, best comedic performers?

Same here. Which is just one of the many "didn't need to know that"s about behind-the-scenes of great movies and shows. I certainly wouldn't let that distract me from how great she was on that show.
