Hey everyone,

This I have wondered for a long time, and I can't figure it out, and it ocurred to me some other disney fans out there may have noticed it and may know the explanation. So here goes:

Beauty and the beast is a beautifull crafted film, and the direction is great. Shots always have a reason to be. Now, there is a very odd shot during the mob song, an extreme close-up of Mrs.Pott's eyes. If you don't know what I am talking about, you can see it here:

'The shot happens at minute 3:30.

Does anyone know why the filmmakers put this there? Is it to ease the transition from the previous shot? Is it just a mistake???

That one shot reminds me of Dumbo and maybe that's it. Maybe its just a funny cameo.

It could be a editing mistake, and in everything that's going on in that moment it was never noticed.... at the same time though, these people live and breathe the film. I can't imagine them messing something like that up. Maybe we're just supposed to sense the fear the characters are experiencing in that given moment?

I dont really think it's a mistake. There are transitions like that in a variety of films in a variety of scenes.

Close-ups usually come during / after intense moments. Seeing as that scene can qualify as intense, a shot like that, even transitional, makes sense.

I don't think it's a mistake. Someone clearly animated that. And that didn't take 5 minutes...if one considers cleanup, color and animation check, that shot alone is a day or two of work. It HAS to have been intentional.

As for it being a homage...possible. I don't know.

As for the "close-ups after intense moments"... I don't think there is a pattern when it comes to that. Not only that, this is an extreme close-up. Usually these are used for drawing attention to someone's expression...or, like when the beast is about to beat Gaston (when there is a brief extrme close-up of HIS eyes), it may be done to show the character's passion and intent...
