Avatar: The Last Airbender - The Complete Book 1 Collectors Edition
Available June 22nd in an all-new limited edition DVD set

This is obviously aimed at a more adult crowd then the previous releases, so why no HD or even widescreen? I'm starting to doubt those who claimed that Nick was only releasing a fullscreen version to cater to their younger demographic. I've got a bad feeling that Nick screwed up and made this show in standard def-fullscreen (in a time that all other cable network's animated shows were being produced in HD widescreen). If so, its a shame with all the beautiful artwork.

BTW: I hate how Nick is replacing all their custom logos, above the show titles, with their new generic one (i.e. brush stroke for Avatar, jellyfish for Spongebob, flying saucer for Invader Zim, bottle for Rugrats, etc.)

I am really excited for this. I started watching the show finally this last month as the trailer for the movie looked good and I wanted to know what it was all about.

So I think I'll wait for these releases. I love extra discs and the packaging is great! If I made custom covers or the show like I was thinking about, they would look more like this, like old books.

But I do agree, it is sad if Nick didn't make wide-screen versions for the show. Oh well.

This looks really cool! I'll be looking forward to the new extra features (considering that the original sets had almost none). I just hope it isn't too expensive (the old sets were practically $50!).

I guess it's the new trend now. Isn't Disney doing the same with the "One Disney" logo thing?

Oh, this new edition looks great. I knew i should have waited and not buy the existing editions as soon as the live-action movie was announced.

Well, here's my take on what is new. It mentions an all-new documentary, which appears to be the only additional supplemental material we know of, and it'll probably be 15-20mins long (knowing Nick and how they cater to children, but they could always surprise us and make a real documentary with depth).

Also, I expect the paperback book that comes with the set to be a smaller more condensed version of Avatar: The Last Airbender (The Art of the Animated Series):



So I'm not sure those who already bought the previous boxed set will be missing much. Not to mention you'd probably have to pay premium for this over what is already an expensive set.

I doubt it will be THAT much more then the original set, but I could be wrong. I really have high hopes for this set, that much I know!

In only got this last christmas.

Maybe they'll be cool about it later and sell just the extra discs like they ended up doing for the complete "I Love Lucy" and "MacGyver" sets?

Well I've been thinking of getting the other set....just whenever I see them at Target...$50 seemed steep....but im glad I waited it out now...i'd rather get this then those other box sets....

They go for $40 at our Target, but Amazon has 'em all for $30 each.

Hey, at least $50 beats Barnes n' Noble's price for the third "book". That one alone's $80 at that store, and I ain't payin that much for a set that has anything short of 23 hrs of bonuses and a collectible.

EDIT: I still say they're missing a big window of opportunity in bringing the series to blu-ray concurrently with the movies.

If I would have bought them....it certainly wouldn't be at Target or anywhere like that...if they are $50 for 3 discs...I was looking around seeing how much I could get them previously viewed or a used one on ebay/amazon/half.com/etc but i'll wait for this one....

This comes from a reviewer on Amazon:

"For the Collector's Edition, if you've already purchased the previously-released Book I collection, you DO NOT need this edition. I repeat, you DO NOT NEED this edition. Inside the fancy box is a DVD with a 20-minute documentary that explores the origins of this series with its creators. Not a bad documentary, but not worth throwing an extra $30 on the counter. Also included in the set is a small booklet that shows some earlier sketches as well as commentary from the two creators. Again, nice, but not worth a re-purchase. And last, the previously-released BOOK I collection is what you're actually getting inside this box. They just took the old edition (box and all), put it inside another box along with a documentary and booklet, stamped LIMITED COLLECTOR'S EDITION on the box, and then jacked the price up $10-$15 dollars. The distributor is trying to take advantage of the up-coming movie. Don't be duped."

I just can't believe how dead-on accurate I was about this set, 20-minute doc and sample art book included. So those of you that already have the Season 1 boxed set, save your money. If you want the artwork, just buy the Art of Avatar book and get the full thing. If you want the 20-minute doc, look for it on YouTube as I'm sure it'll show up there eventually.

It's the same thing, just a preview edition. Watch the video supertalies posted, you'll see it's the same book, just smaller and with less pages. the new set is a pointless marketing plug for the new movie.

It is VERY disappointing, but oh well. I don't have any of these DVD's yet, so I'll buy what ever is less money. But it's still very disappointing...but not surprising!

Is the bonus disc the same as the one that comes in the other box set? Anything worth looking at there?

I don't think so. It's in a loose slip case, and the only thing on the disc is a brand new 25-30 minute documentary called "Avatar Spirits," that's it. From what I've heard, the documentary is great (but that's from BIG fans). I'm gonna wait for it to pop up on YouTube.
