BREAKING NEWS... I just ordered
another (again, I was VERY careful about the eBay seller and I really think I've found a trustworthy one- if I get conned I'll make sure to tell everyone who they are and everything, but they have a 100% feedback rating and over 30 counts of feedback)...
Again, drumroll please... ... ... The 2nd Disney DVD I've ordered or that will be added to my collection when it comes... (if it comes - FINGERS CROSSED) ...

Why only now? If you're a Disney fan, why didn't you buy them when they came out? I expected you owned Sleeping Beauty on DVD.

I am surprised. I thought you had quite a considerable amount. I don't blame you about having none though. I started a movie collection probably a week or two ago. Right know I only have three Disney but they all are Pixar. I only have like seven overall. Anyway congratulations

Yeah- on VHS.

Thanks. It does stress me out how little of my money I've been able to spend on movies over the years. Had money not been such a problem (and the folks over at Disney actually cared about things like the economy and their customers), I'd have a huge Disney collection.

Well, I've already told this story but- I started buying DVD's in December 2001. And I was a childhood Disney fan but a teenage horror fan. It was cheaper and easier to collect the horror essentials - it always has been - than to buy Disney. And by 2001, when I was still very deadset against upgrading my favorite movies from VHS to DVD because VHS used to work fine. By then, I was a strictly bonus features guy. I would only buy a movie I already had on VHS if it had bonus features on it. They always had to have commentaries and featurettes and the trailer. Those were my 3 biggies. And they couldn't be more than $10 a piece. Then, I got into online ordering. By the time I joined this site, I had just bought all the last of the feature-length (over an hour, sorry Saludos Amigos) movies (the last 2 I needed were Make Mine Music and The Great Mouse Detective).
I had them all on VHS. I could watch them whenever I wanted. And to get them in great condition, though used- I paid maybe $5.00 at the most. I got Pinocchio, Beauty and the Beast, The Rescuers, Melody Time, Fun and Fancy Free, The Black Cauldron and more for DIRT cheap. Most were under $3.75 total. That's important to me. That they're all available to me at one time. I could watch all 32 of the feature-length animated classics from '37-'95 in one week. I didn't have to wait until 2009 for the corporate jerks to finally re-release Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Disney already I think had a reputation for producing higher quality VHS's that lasted longer anyway.
But ultimately my decision to finally start buying comes from VHS becoming less reliable and my horror collection is now basically complete. Finally, I can put more attention into Disney DVD. And money's getting better.

Oh, I doubt it. Real life can't be like that much like The Great Pumpkin.

For many years, hell even now- Disney represents an extravagance. A luxury that I decided I couldn't afford at the time I started buying DVD's. I wanted to have all the movies together and with VHS, for a considerable fraction of what the DVD's cost, I could own and watch all the movies at the same time. If I was crazy enough to have relied on the DVD's, I would have been waiting forever for the movies to be available. Or had to go on a mad hunt looking for affordable copies. Or shelled out 30-40 bucks on eBay, while you guys told me horror stories about having been ripped off on eBay. And anyone who knows me here knows how I feel about Disney's Vault policy thing. I see absolutely no reason or excuse for it. I never have. It's selfish and underhanded, and made me very angry.
Why now? Because I'm comfortable with my horror collection. And it took me a long time to change my mind about the company running Disney DVD. But just because they own a huge chunk of my childhood and want to sell it to me piece by piece at 2-3x what a studio run by people with some idea of what a soul is would be offering...doesn't mean they can keep me from enjoying their movies on a better format than VHS.

I'm sorry I haven't seen a VHS movie in probably half a decade and when I actually used to watch them it was either Barney the dinosaur, Land Before Time or Disney movies but I don't remember any of them having trailers (of the movie itself) or commentaries/featurettes.
The only one I can remember was Snow White which had anything.
I remember owning Beauty and the Beast, Lion King, Cinderella, Dumbo, Pinocchio, Little Mermaid, Pocahontas, Fox and the Hound, Robin Hood and Jungle Book and none of them can I remember watching any features.
So, yes, while Disney were being miserly and slow, I am pretty sure that every DVD had all the features before or actually had features.
Now like I said the last time I saw one was a long time ago and the last time I actually watched one from start to finish must've been nearly a decade or longer so really, are there actually any features on VHS, assuming you remember/still have them?

Woo! You even picked up one of the few I don't have, Cinderella! Not by choice mind you, it was lost in a move and I haven't replaced it yet. One of these days . . .

Actually... now that you mention, I seem to remember there was a version of The English Patient on VHS with an audio commentary on it. Obviously, you couldn't turn it off, since it was VHS... I think I saw it in a magazine. If somehow I was smoking something and that never happened - American Beauty put out a VHS with an audio commentary on it. I just found that from Google.

My Snow White VHS had the intro from... Roy(?) Disney. Winnie the Pooh also had an introduction on the beginning, with some cast interviews. Fun and Fancy Free, Peter Pan, Sleeping Beauty, and The Jungle Book all had featurettes after the movie. And of course, this was 1997 when these VHS's came out (the Fun and Fancy Free VHS had previews on it for Pooh's Grand Adventure: The Search for Christopher Robin). I believe they did the same thing with the THX of Bambi and they might have done it with Cinderella too. Unfortunately, I only have the old VHS's of those movies and never tried to upgrade. Oh and unfortunately, my The Little Mermaid VHS was a special edition too. They actually completely screwed up the end credits by putting a live-action music video over most of the screen with the human actress who does Ariel's voice singing... "Part of Your World"?
As for live-action, Old Yeller had a featurette on at the end of it. That may be the only one.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!
You made a really great first pick, and a really great second pick!!!

Except of course the unfortunate fact some colors are wrong on Cinderella's DVD (if you want more info on that, ask me, but it would take too long to explain how you can tell here, but I assure you it's there).
However...I guess you'll just complete your DVD collection and be satisfied. I am surprised you are not going to just go Blu, because there is a lot of inkling that that is going to take over DVD. I don't collect all Disney movies, just the ones I like or think are really great or are so important to the company, you know, real Disney classics, so I went Blu. Maybe I'll get all the Walt ones some day, which are all really solid and good. There's always something great about them.

Bambi had the "making of" featurette on it, and yeah, i remember the Winnie the Pooh intro.

Strangely enough, I'm not concerned with that. Yet.

I don't have Blu-Ray. A player or an HD-tv. That would be very expensive and after talking to / hearing from enough people with Blu-Ray, I've decided- what's the point? Too many people are not happy with the results. Only new movies look great in Blu-Ray anyway. 70's and 80's movies are littered with grain and look terrible, I'm told. And those are the movies I'd be itching to buy first on Blu-Ray.
The thinking with my first choices for Disney DVD's was to buy the ones that I thought would be most out of print and most expensive. After doing some searching on eBay... it turns out those were 2 of the
cheapest animated classics. I tried looking for U.S. sellers with brand new copies of Lady and the Tramp, Peter Pan, Alice in Wonderland, and The Little Mermaid and they all want upwards of $19-20. If I wanted to pay those kinds of prices... as Goliath said, I would have bought them when they came out. At Wal-Mart.
I could have saved my money, true. And bought all the Blu player and TV set-up... But by then, what's the first Disney animated classic on Blu-Ray? Pinocchio? Sleeping Beauty? By then, they would be out-of-print probably. I mean, I'm doing better financially. But all that means is that, where as before I couldn't count on anything- I could barely pay my bills, I can now count on at least one brand new DVD every 2 weeks. That's still pathetic by most standards. Maybe Blu will improve in the estimation of most of the people I listen to. But until then, I guess I'm doing just what I did with VHS all over again with standard-DVD. Which by the way, has always been good enough for me in the past. On my normal-sized TV, even some terrible transfers look pretty good. I like things I can rely on.
Yet More Breaking News... Just ordered my 3rd. This one's a bit iffy, because... I ordered it used. But I'm guaranteed that this eBay seller has an absolutely impeccable reptuation. They've sold to well over 1,000 buyers, has that ever-important 100% feedback rating, has the "Top Rated Seller" seal on their information page and on their item pages, has tons of award-type qualifications everywhere. They swear everything's in very good condition. Which of course isn't Like New... but I'm hoping it really is Like New. But I was bound to find myself having to settle for something like this sooner or later. And it was the cheapest available copy from a reliable U.S. seller.
#3 is ... :

IceFlash, when and where? Because I can prove it right, but I should not do it in this thread.
Lazario, I also am not entirely sure why you don't wait for the DVDs that are coming out now, like Alice in Wonderland is coming soon and Dumbo, and all the Diamonds.

Actually... thanks to Netflix, I already rented the bonus discs of Peter Pan and Bambi. Even Snow White. Just like 1 year ago, they still had the bonus discs available even after the main features were out of print. However, for some reason- they wouldn't let me rent Alice in Wonderland's bonus disc. Ever. I tried. It's been dis-allowed for rental for over a year now.

This would definitely be good news to hear, though I don't know what you mean exactly.
I always heard the job of THX was to make the movie look as much like the original theatrical version. Only with sharper images and more vibrant colors, etc. So, I guess I would think that that's the way Cinderella's hair color was supposed to be.
I tried to a Google search for some DVD-type fanatics talking technically about what else seems wrong with the colors but I can't find anything at all.

Well it depends on the film and the release, Blade Runner looks stunning while other films look meh.

Well, I have to go to school and won't be home to 9:30, but I could pm you about what's up with the colors. But I also want to see what IceFlash means, too.
I guess I get why you aren't waiting for the new releases of the films on DVD. Because of the prices. I guess I didn't think they were that expensive if you only buy the ones to complete your collection when it comes out, which may be like only once or twice a month.

It was proven wrong that the colors were incorrect and that it was indeed correct and faithful to the original colors even though they may differ from VHS/Laserdisc colors in one of the threads here though I can't remember which nor can I find it. I just tried searching and I can't find the thread that contained it.
