With A Goofy Movie's 15th anniversary coming up on the 7th April, I thought it would be great to start a new thread so we can celebrate this underrated classic!

To get the ball rolling, somebody has created a complete (and freaking AMAZING) recreation of the After Today scene from the movie.

It's great to see other people still appreciate and recognise this lost gem. Compared to the other two Disney animated films of 1995 (*cough* POCAHONTAS *cough*) A Goofy Movie had great characters, a whole lot of heart and in all managed to achieve a lot more with a whole lot less without taking itself too seriously. Tevin Campell's songs - I2I and Stand Out were worth the price of admission alone.

It's a shame it's been forgotten by Disney - The movie has a great 1990s period feel about it without been specifically dated to anything specific.

One would think the 15th Anniversary in April would be a great time to put out a new BD with the correct Aspect Ratio in R1/encoding for 16:9 in R2/3... It's not like it wouldn't sell... It's got freaking Goofy on the cover!

One issue I have is people calling it a DisneyToon picture. It was a Walt Disney FEATURE Animation France picture - The same studio who contributed to Runaway Brain, HoND, Hercules, Tarzan, Fantasia 2000, Atlantis... NOT DisneyToon material.

This is such an under-rated movie. It's so much fun, has great characters, good story, and I just love the music. Maybe I'll put my disc in tonight.

I tend to follow the 6 month rule when it comes to reviving old threads. I also felt that the 15th was big enough to warrant a new thread. Mods, merge away if you feel otherwise...

omg, i love that video. so well done. would be wicked if they could recreate "on the open road" as well.

i never saw goofy movie in the cinema but now i love it, and watch the dvd quite often. i started watching it more often after meeting bill farmer last year.
i love the songs, specially the powerline bit.

why wasnt roxanne in an extremely goofy movie? we only got parts of goof troop here, so if they broke up in an episode of that, it probably didnt screen here.

Yeah, that was strange that she didn't show up there, but then again, I don't consider the direct-to-video sequels to be canon with the first film.

She did appear in an episode of House of Mouse in which she has a date with Max, which everyone tries to butt in on.

yeh, i saw that ep on youtube. hilarious. poor ol max. he tried so hard. i really enjoyed house of mouse and keep hoping they will release the series on dvd one day.

This is really an underrated movie. Not "classic", but good.

Well, I'll put my input into this thread... I love this film. It deserves a much better DVD release than it's current GCC mess. I think it would need some good remastering to make a good BD release (it doesn't look like it used CAPS, and I'd want to hear those songs come out clearly through all 7 of my speakers). Knowing that Disney isn't gonna put that much effort into this film, I'd be fine with a 16:9 rerelease on DVD.

The vid is amazingly done!

When this movie was first released, I absolutely loved it. And I still do. It's hard to believe that anyone would hate this movie (I remember a review putting this alongside Miley Cyrus dreck and Hunchback 2).

I definitely agree that the soundtrack is one of the best aspects of the film--"On the Open Road" is a particular favorite of mine. The scenes with "big foot" were hilarious, too. I think the only part of the movie I don't like is when Goofy and Max are singing together on the river. It was incredibly corny, and these moments are hard to watch (especially if you're around other people). Besides that, I loved the movie.

As a side note, I think this movie (along with Kingdom Hearts a decade or so later) is what made me like Goofy. The Goofy of the shorts was always kind of annoying to me--less so than Mickey or Daisy, of course, but still gratiating.

It's unbelievable how catchy the Powerline songs are, even 15 years later.

I agree that they need to release this film in the correct ratio. That is why I got a copy of the Australian version.

However, this film is NOT part of the "cannon" Disney Animated films. Yes, some of it was done at the France Studio and even in Burbank, CA. However a lot was done at the DisneyToon Studios in Australia, even if it wasn't called that at the time.

Had "Ducktales The Movie" done better, this film would have been a straight "Goof Troop" film, but it did not do as well and so they changed it just enough to have it steer clear from that. But it still has many elements from the show.

It's a DisneyToon film with Disney Feature quality to it. But it's still NOT a "cannon" film, sorry.

I agree it's not a 'cannon' film (already a loose term see: "The Wild") but I still draw great exception to it being lumped into the same category of Return of Jafar or Ducktales as the production values and the intent of the films are just not the same.

If you want to get technical, the project wasn't lead by Walt Disney Television Animation but instead Feature Animation and was developed to get the French studio up to Burbank's standards so they could work on bigger and better features together. The story work is 100% Walt Disney Feature Animation.

I agree- there's something about this movie that makes it feel like more of a classic. I LOVE the music, and it's just such a feel-good movie. I think that it's great that Goofy and Max are awkward and just relatable...I like how their relationship blossoms throughout the movie. Yeha, it just is a great feel-good movie!

Well, it's time I stated my opinions on A Goofy Movie.

I really think, looking back on it as a 20 year old, that it is a perfect testament to the 1990s. Parents were encouraged to befriend their children rather than discipline them, and so on.

Plus, the music just screams 90s.

I love it, and hope we see it on Blu-Ray soon.

Interestingly enough A Goofy Movie is mentioned in Waking Sleeping Beauty as a production of Feature Animation's French satellite studio.

To reiterate my humble opinion on the matter (not that it matters in the long run..) - A GOOFY MOVIE IS NOT A DISNEYTOON FEATURE. DisneyToon = Walt Disney Television Animation, i.e. stuff made in Australia, Canada, Tokyo or outsourced.

Anything made in France is feature and A Goofy Movie really should be treated like Nightmare, Roger Rabit and James & The Giant Peach, etc.

It's not necessarily part of the "cannon" (though if Mulan, Lilo and Brother Bear get in A Goofy Movie should as well), but it isn't a DisneyToon/Television feature like all of the DTV such as Return to Jafar, Ducktales the Movie & Bambi 2002.

Are there plans for a reissue of the sequel in the UK or here? If so could the first one be getting re-released to?

So I don't own either of the Goofy Movies.

Would now be as good a time as any to buy? I doubt these would ever make it to Blu-ray - any word about a new restoration, re-release of either Goofy Movie?

If not, walmart.com has them for a reasonable price and I may just go ahead and buy them.

I dunno. I think they're more likely to come to blu-ray sooner than most of the "classics". I mean, they're both in CAPS format (so technically, no restoration is required, just a digital-to-digital transfer) and being "lesser" films, can be released as "supporting" releases to Disney's bigger animated home video releases.
