I wanted to talk about it here a long time ago so better late then never.

Did you guys know all of the Disney big Classic already mastered in HD.

I still have most of them saved on my HD DVR and one of the best ones that i keep on playing over and over again - cuz for some reason it only saw one DVD released which was super duper bad and wasnt in 16X9

how come BATB gets another release while Hurc only got one since DVD was created????

Well yeah, virtually every movie that has been released in theaters has been mastered in HD already. I just wish they would play more than just the ones youve listed. I mean, I like them all, but how about some Lion King?

but i have no idea what iv'e missed already as i never really pai attention to ABC Family, i only watch it around xmas for the HD xmas movies, and thats when they advertised all these movies in HD.

So now ABC Family is on my radar.

I'll alert you guys when i see new listings

and yeah most movies are remastered and i watch a lot of them on the premium movie channels in HD - a lot of them are getting bad trabnsers, The Disney movies though are flawless - i was kissing the screen when i was watching Herc and Tarzan - i mean perfect, and its only 1080i i can not wait for a true 1080p hd versions.

What does this mean?
Who is remastering these?
Has Disney remastered all of them or is someone just upscaling/remastering themselves for TV?

Like the ones in Europe, Sword in the Stone? Who remastered that? Surely not Disney.

I know there are a lot of HD channels now but are they really HD or is there some sort of program rechanneling them into HD or something like that?

Oh, I love ABC Family! I watch it all the time, and always in HD. I've watched Aladdin and Pinocchio in ABC Family HD. There may be others, but I don't remember.

I've had my questions answered partially elsewhere but since this forum is more Disney-focused I'll throw it here as well.

Is it as easy to convert Disney films in CAPS to HD as it is Pixar/Dreamworks etc. films?

I'm ignorant here so any help would be appreciated, those films don't really need restoration per say am I right since they were animated using computers?

So only those pre-Mermaid? would need extensive restoration and remastering or whatever?

And if all these classics are being shown on Disney's own channels it doesn't make much sense considering they would have less marketing push with any potential BR releases by saying first time in HD or whatever since everyone's seen it. Adding to that, would Disney really have converted their whole library to HD already? Considering the length it takes them for other movies it seems kind of artificial to say they've done it for a lot of them and if they have how can the quality match when done in such a short time?

What exactly is the process of remastering/converting? Also, one last thing, if reviews say Disney one-upped themselves again wouldn't that be misdirected if Disney have already upgraded many of them before titles like Lion King or whichever they choose to do next? What I mean is that there is no linear upward trend that the techniques are getting better, just that Disney did them in one shot and is releasing them slowly, so a BR of Hercules in 2012 could have been upgraded in 2008 and if they did a Lady and the Tramp one in 2011 but Hercules was better, than isn't it wrong to say they have improved or technology or whatever has if it's already been done? How can we tell?

actually everything that is shot on film and not video is already HD.
The reason we get them in ND on DVDs is due to the fac they were compressed to fit a smaller size disc such as dvd.

Thats why a lot of the TV shows like Sinfeld and Friends are now in HD.

So
It is very easy to have all movies shwon in HD, however, the remastering part comes to clean the old film from dust sctactesh and whatever.

I am 100% SURE HERC was remastered as well - the picture looks wayy too good for just being converted to HD from the original film it was on.
Other movies im watching on HBO HD and Cinemax HD are better the the regular channels, but i can always tell when they were just converted to HD or when they were remastered and cleaned.

The audio is a big part here too, as audio is compressed to fit a DVD.
All the sound on the HD Disney moves are blowing me away as welll !!

Herc was already made in CAPS, so it shouldn't have to be remastered to be in HD.

If what you're saying about Hercules is true and is true for the rest then Disney would already have these in store for release:

1) Hercules
2) Aladdin
3) Tarzan
4) Hunchback of Notre Dame
5) Sword in the Stone
6) Fox and the Hound
7) Black Cauldron
Treasure Planet
9) Emperor's New Groove
10) Pocahontas
11) Mulan

I've also heard Lilo & Stitch has been aired so that would mean Disney have 12 in the wings? I don't know, seems like a lot considering how long it took them to do Snow White/Pinocchio/Fantasia/Sleeping Beauty and yes I know they are older films but still and if they are indeed that fast then they should have already had plans to release some of these. None of the non-Platinums pre-Chicken Little have had BR releases and no inkling of a re-release.

Not to mention, if they can do 12 films in what less than 2 years they should be able to put out more releases than they are currently. It makes no sense. And lol I just realized that Disney doesn't show Platinum titles on their channel (and of course why would they with the Vault in place)

So if they used the same copy for Nemo they used in the DVD it would be fine right? They don't have to do anything just put it on the disc?

Sorry, I have absolutely no idea how it's done. But why was the Hercules DVD trashed then? If it needs no remaster wouldn't it look the same on BR except sharper and clearer?

Right, you don't remaster films that exist as digital files, they never age. You never have to worry about it looking different 20 years from now.

Unless somehow files go corrupt or missing or something.

as for why they haven't been released, it was never about it being difficult, its all about marketing, what they think will sell and what they don't. and there's a lot of strategy as to when each one should release, when the demand will be highest.

Most films don't need to be remastered, the only reason they can be higher quality on Blu-Ray is because of the bigger capicity, they don't need to be compressed which decreases picture quality. Old films and films that have dirt/scratches/imperfections for whatever reason need to be remastered. Talking about The Emperor's New Groove I caught the last half hour tonight and compared the HD broadcast to the SD - it looked great. I was really blown away when I watched Who Framed Roger Rabbit? in HD though and compared the broadcasts - while you had to look for a difference in TENG it was obvious every second on RR, it was much sharper and the SD broadcast was very soft, RR looked brand new.

Of course, there is the occasional exception. Toy Story and Toy Story 2 were remastered for 3D, the first also getting a 2D remaster because it was originally rendered in 720p. Beauty and the Beast essentially the same with 3D and Imax. This isn't so much fixing any damage as it is attempting to improve upon existing material.
