here is a report from disneypixar.fr about a recent screening of the movie. I translated it with babelfish and corrected the mistakes as best as possible:
A few weeks ago, DisneyPixar.fr was invited to an exclusive projection of the first images of Raiponce (Tangled's title in France), presented by the producer of film, Roy Conli.
They showed concept-art, test animation, extracts of storyboards and final animation! The story was presented to us in its broad outlines, as well as the main characters, namely Rapunzel, Flynn, Mother Gothel, Pascal and Maximus. And we had the fortune to see several extracts of the film, at various stages of their realization.
Alright then. Raiponce, what is it about? Flynn Ryder, the most wanted thief, but also the biggest charmer of the kingdom, manages to escape the royal guard together with some stolen property and finds refuge at the top of an isolated and apparently deserted tower. No such luck for him, the tower is inhabited by Rapunzel, a young girl with long, very long golden hair… she was locked up in the tower by Mother Gothel. Rapunzel spends her days with her best friend Pascal, a chameleon, and she hasn't seen another human being since her childhood. Then when she finds herself face to face with this intruding thief. He's a narcissistic and pretentious young man whom Rapunzel quickly ties down to take control of the situation. She then comes up with an idea. In exchange for the stolen goods he brought with him and she took from him, Rapunzel demands Flynn to take her outside the tower to see the mysterious lanterns which populate the sky on the evening of her birthday.
That is the beginning of a delirious adventure full of action, humour and feeling, during which our improbable duo will encounter Maximus, a horse super-cop who is in search of Flynn and a of robbers. On their way towards the kingdommany secrets on Rapunzel's past are revealed…
And our verdict after seeing these first images? Rapunzel leads in a new era for Disney. It's the classic princess story, but told in a very modern way and with very contemporary humor and situations. We can thank the two young directors for this, Nathan Greno and Byron Howard. The presence of Glen Keane in the position of animation director manages to bring us heroes in the pure Disney tradition but transposed into remarkable cgi animation Even though we didn't get to see much of Mother Gothel, she seems like a very complex personality. Malicious but at the same time very sympathetic in the eyes of her captive.
We also were treated to a musical sequence. It should be known that the music of film is composed by Alan Menken with lyrics by Glen Slater. It's the song "I See The Lights" which we had the chance to hear and to see on. A superb ballad lead by the rhythm of a pretty guitar, and sung by the two main characters, Rapunzel and Flynn, whose arevoiced by Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi. A true moment of happiness!
All in all, Raiponce is a true surprise, and we will make sure you won't miss any information. Rapunzel will be in theatres in France on December 1, and in selected theatres in Paris, as of November 17!

Apparently main animation on Tangled has wrapped. This info comes to us from a video by a Disney employee, taken at the group photo taken when Tangled animation production wrapped. Everyone in the video wears a special Tangled crew t-shirt. With a Glen Keane drawing on the front and the names of the crew on the back!

John K's opinion
John Kricfalusi, key talent behind MIGHTY MOUSE THE NEW ADVENTURES, and creator of REN & STIMPY, had a post about TANGLED on his web site, which ended up with more responses than anything else he's had there for a long time.
Essentially, John demonstrated how TANGLED could be made entirely out of stock animation poses refined and polished by Disney and Pixar over many years. He also remarked that TANGLED's "tude" was alive and well, and perhaps too plentiful.
John posts a ton of information on his site about classic animation, which seems well researched and thoroughly analyzed.
We'll soon know if TANGLED, with its apparently long and troubled gestration, sets the BO on fire this winter, and shows it's set apart from, rather than indebted to, the SHREK franchise.

I think this is the first time this plot point has been revealed? I know it's the first I've heard of it, because that one piece of concept art has always intrigued me. Very excited to see this particular scene in the movie. In exchange for the stolen goods he brought with him and she took from him, Rapunzel demands Flynn to take her outside the tower to see the mysterious lanterns which populate the sky on the evening of her birthday.
I cannot say enough how excited I am to hear the music! I'm practically ready to jump out of my skin with anticipation. We also were treated to a musical sequence. And Gothel sounds like the most incredible Disney villain ever!
Oh, and, once again, Rob, thanks!

Yeah, I know, it seems like those lights are a very important part of the story, combined with the songtitle "I See The Lights", that must be when she sees the lanterns... I can't wait to see it all on screen!UmbrellaFish wrote:I think this is the first time this plot point has been revealed? Re: John K's opinion
If that;s the report where he ridiculud everything Disney and wrote it off as all the characters "looking gay" and "acting gay" (his words, not mine) then I don't really care for his opinion much. Especially not when he makes a post on his blog by the name "Beautiful", containing images of the latest Shrek movie.kurtadisneyite wrote:John Kricfalusi, key talent behind MIGHTY MOUSE THE NEW ADVENTURES, and creator of REN & STIMPY, had a post about TANGLED on his web site, which ended up with more responses than anything else he's had there for a long time.

I found another report of the screening in France on a french Disney forum, again, tried to translate as good as possible:
A presentation was held for the press last month. The film was introduced by the producer who told us about the characters and the story. They showed approximately 25 minutes of animation, different extracts of the movie varying from storyboards to finished animation. Some of the scenes that were shown were the prologue of the movie and what was described as the most beautiful scene in the movie, the song "I See The Light", which they showed in full.
The reason why no info of the presentation leaked earlier was because there was an embargo on info untill the moment that Toy Story was out, to not conflict news between the two projects. So now I can finally give you information on the movie.
I was impressed by the technique, the subtle motion in the computer animation that makes the clothing and hair move in a realistic way. I was surprised to see the movie open with a prologue that reffers to some of the classic Disney opening sequences, complete with a narrator and everything. It reminded me of Beauty and the Beast and I'm sure that the final version will be splendid.
As for the style. We were promised a movie that had heart and emotion, the depth of the old traditional movies but told in a way so that contemporary audiences could relate, and comedy elements to go along with that. After this, some of the sequences they showed me left me with mixed feelings. Some of the ideas were brilliant, but other jokes seemed to be already done.
It's just a little remark I have because in general the movie looks beautiful. You can't ask Disney to not make a Disney film. You could accuse them of playing it safe, with a style and storytelling remniscent of old Disney movies. Don't trust all the rumors that the movie has a bad or silly story, it doesn't. What I saw gave a lot of confidence in the movie and the way it plays out to the audience. There are very beautiful sequences in the movie, with gorgeous settings (the art director previously worked on Tarzan and Atlantis).
The song I heard did not dazzle me. The melody was pleasant as is always the case with Menken, but I quickly forgot it to tell you the truth. I have to say though that some of his songs take me a few listenings to truelly appreciate them. It will probably be the case with this song.
That's all I'm going to say for now, other members of the forum where also present and they might be able to say more about the story and the characters. I just wanted to share my first impression. I can't wait to see Raiponce which looks very beautiful and a classic Disney movie in time for Christmas.
I did sense a feeling that the animators feel the weight of the Disney name on their shoulders, which might hold them back creatively and give them a certain pressure. Something that Pixar for instance doesn't have.
Afterwards, Roy Conli said that certain projects related to Raiponce are in devellopment for the Disney parks, but what happens with those depends partially on the success of the movie!
p.s.: I do have to say that I thought that Rapunzel was a real cutie!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but am I right in thinking that Tangled has had more test / preview screenings than any other movie of recent times ? Or do all films have as many, just Tangled's information has leaked more so than other films ?
What I am hearing though so far is wonderful news, and I'm truely thirilled people seem to be enjoying all the previews.
I do wonder what the poster advertisments will be; how they will handle it compared to the teaser trailer.

I understand that one of you Disney fans do not trust this Mexican site that talks about Disney's, "Rapunzel (Tangled)," but here is another message from it anyways. By the way, I may have to disagree this message about, "lack of promotion," because it seems to us that the movie will probably succeed, despite the promotion. Read for yourself.

Rapunzel on the cover of D23
A fantastic image of Rapunzel and Flynn escaping the tower graces the Fall issue of the journal D23, to commemorate and give us a preview of "Rapunzel", the classic number fifty of the Disney studios. Given the apparent lack of promotion that has this movie, just four months to be released, this inclusion is a breath of fresh air, as the magazine goes on sale on August 3, in just two weeks. Within that time, the animation of the film is completed, so we hope to have more details in depth about the characters, story and song. Keep your eye on our Twitter and Facebook officials for details.
P.S. Disney's, "Rapunzel (Tangled)," will be done within two weeks, then the advertisement for that movie will begin.

Well, we have had a teaser trailer, a full trailer that has been included in front of one of Disney's biggest movies, a website, and a facebook page with little titbits of information ..... I think thats quite a bit so far, personally. Imagine if they hit us hard with promotion now ... wouldnt we be bit sick of it by the time the eventual release date rolled round ?
