Open letter to Disney Records

For more than 20 years now (!!!) we’ve been collecting all kinds of Disney CD’s : from original soundtracks of animated classics and live-action movies to theme park CD’s from all over the world, from original cast recordings of your musicals to DisneyMania CD’s, whether they’re very rare or a re-release with new artwork… You name it : we bought it !!! So we now have a treasured collection of over 2,000 Disney CD’s !!! (And may we add here that CD’s is merely a PART of our entire Disney collection !)

So you can understand we were extremely disappointed with Disney’s decision to stop releasing “score-only” CD’s as they have become an essential part of our collection and we really enjoy having these beautiful scores on an actual disc.

We’ve never understood why Disney didn’t decide to release them in limited quantities, and/or through a CD-club perhaps, like Varese Sarabande or Intrada frequently do.

That said : we did purchase the i-Tunes versions of “A Christmas Carol” and “Up” and in the very same week we also bought “Disney/Pixar Greatest” to have at least 3 and ½ minutes of the “Up” score on CD.

And then you decided to make the score of “Up” available on CD after all, but not for the fans or collectors ! No, just for the jury-members of the Academy Awards. So : the real fans can have a shot at this CD after all on eBay for more than $ 300 ! (as happened this week) We know these CD’s are not supposed to end up on sites like eBay, but they do, and we all know that you know that too. And to compensate for all the efforts the real fans have gone through (downloading it, paying for it, burning it on a CD-R themselves, printing the artwork to have some kind of cover, while they’d rather go out and buy an original CD) you add a little extra to this : a DVD featuring a clip from “Up”, to be housed together with the CD itself, in a very nice full-color artwork package. Not for the fans or the collectors of course : NO, only for the Oscar jury members !

Sad but true…

We don’t mind that you spoil them in an effort to win that oh-so important Oscar, but you should treat your fans & collectors a whole lot better ! And from the look of this promotional item : this would have been a perfect limited edition CD-club release. The jury members of the Academy Awards don’t care at all (and wouldn’t even bother to download the score). Our question is : do you still care about your fan base ?

That's a good point. As I posted in the Up thread, some songs from the score are available as free downloads right now, and I was thinking about how it'd be great if there was a CD score available...
