The Most Annoying Sound You Ever Heard and Why it Annoys You

For me, I'd say knocking on wood. It's the most annoying to me because it signifies my parents' increasingly, numbingly pathetic attempts to shorten the length of my very enjoyable showers.

I'm about to commit blasphemy as a gay man and a lover of musical theater, especially old school musical theater, but...I have never liked Ethel Merman's singing at all. Her voice is like having a hot poker shoved where the sun don't shine to me. She had all the subtlety of a foghorn and as much as many may whine and moan that Rosalind Russell (+ ghost singer Lisa Kirk) got the role of Rose in the film version of Gypsy instead of Merman, at least Roz+Ms. Kirk knew the meaning of the word "subtlety." (Of course, I still prefer Bette Midler's Merman impersonation in the 1993 TV version to all of them, but that's neither here nor there. Also neither here nor there is the fact that I'd rather that Warner had gotten their first choice for Rose in the film version - Judy Garland.)

Not so much annoying, but this is a pet peeve of mine. It amkes me cringe all the time. When I hear a fork or knife scratch a glass plate...ugh it hurts my ears!
Other than that I would have to say knocking too since my dad used to wake me up in the morning by opening my door and knocking really loudly to wake up. I wouldn't have cared if it was just him saying "wake up", but no, all he did was knock.

I don't know if it's just my dirty mind, but with the way you worded this post I can see why your parents would be worried about you spending so much time in the bathroom

Is wood the key word?

Any squeaking noise. It drives me NUTS. Squeaky boots, squeaky teeth, squeaky plates, etc.
Though Babaloo's noise is a close second.

Yeah, it's your dirty mind. I like my showers long and hot, and can hardly help it.

Now you're triggered my dirty mind.... and I'm a Mormon!
For me, the sound styrofoam makes when its touched, robbed together, etc. It's the most obnoxious squeak I can think of.
Cheers,
JM

Tom Cruise yelling, it just irritates me so
Anyways, I hate the slurping sound of people eating cereal, chewing with the mouth open and then talking with their mouth full. Why must they slurp milk off a spoon so loud?

A basketfull of little, blind puppies, all squeaking and squealing at the same time for milk! You can contradict me if you want, but I HATE THAT SOUND!!!!!

Oh Zelda, how can a perfect game, have such an earbleeding little helper.

SHUT UP, SHUT UP, SHUT UP, SHUT THE F* UP...
Sorry about that, but if you've played Ocarina of Time, you know exactly why I'm so frustrated right now. Anybody who can sit through 10 minutes of that deserves a frickin' Oscar, by all means try, though a headache is ensured. When you feel the urge to throw your computer/laptop out of the window - that's about the right time to stop the video - or so I've heard...
----
And my alarm clock for, uhm, personal reasons.
I hate getting up in the morning.

Spending hours and hours in a room full of people talking and loudly exclaiming in a language I've yet to learn enough of. It makes my head hurt to be in the middle of it all and not be able to understand what's going on.

I'll give a few sounds that annoy me:
English people trying to put an American twang in their speech (and Americans doing vice-versa)
I don't mind the use of the odd Americanism in Britain or the odd Anglicism in America (I'm using "Anglicism" in this context as figures of speech from British English) but I really think that in excess, it gets annoying. There's a TV food critic over here called Lloyd Grossman who comes from New York yet tries to sound somewhat British so much that he frankly sounds Swedish. I know someone who sometimes tries to put on a Southern Californian accent despite coming from a little village in Yorkshire, claiming that she speaks like that because she watches
The Hills. She might also use American vocabulary that would seem out of place in a British conversation. I've told her off for it, and I think that she's beginning to see the error of her ways.

I think that British English and American English are dialects of the same language and I see them as being of equal importance. Yet to mix two dialects together is frankly detrimental to the language and culture of both the UK and the USA. Vivid comprehension is good, but willing linguistic colonisation isn't.
Polystyrene
It's high-pitched. And squeaky. Awful.
Radio with a signal that's not quite there
I listen to the radio mainly via my mobile phone when I'm on the move, and the signal gets better or worse with every step I take, causing really distracting crackling or the all-out disappearance of any normal noise.
Insects (mainly common flies)
The buzzing just irritates my ears, that's all.[/b]

Profanity Horn- Whenever my big sister watches TV shows that have a lot of cussing, that noise irritates me to no end.
Pencil Tapping- This gets annoying when in a quiet area.
Loud TVs- When someone has the TV playing loud enough for me to hear it in upstairs or downstairs, it can get pretty distracting.
Complaining While Playing a Video Game- When my sister complains and yells at the TV because she has trouble playing a video game, it bothers me so much that I leave the house.

The sound of someone filing their nails. It drives me crazy.
That and French Canadian Male accents. I don't know why, but when I have to listen to someone with that accent talk I want to rip my ears off.

Every time Dr. Phil opens his mouth. It's not so much the ultra-conservative moral preaching that bothers me, as it's just the way he talks. "What yoooouuuuu neeeeeeed to doooooo, is toooo loooook at yoooouuuuurseeeeelf and aaaaask yoooooouuuuurseeeelf..."
Also: babies/little children crying. Or screaming. Basically any sound little children make. Put a sock in it.

I agree about the profanity horn. Especially when it's loud and high-pitched. I have very sensitive ears, and I find that noise more offensive than the actual swearing, to be honest.
