I just finished watching Aladdin and it made me want to watch this old TV special my dad recorded many years ago. Only, I think it mistakenly got thrown out and I tried searching for it on the net and couldn't find it.

It had interviews with people waiting in line for the movie taking about how amazing it was and it played out like an early 90's promo. I think it might've been from Disney Channel as I remember them playing a Darkwing Duck music video afterwords. I'm sorry I can't be more specific as I can't remember much about it.

If anyone could post it or direct me to it online or even knows the name of the special, that would be great.

I remember a man saying how he loved the gimmicks of the genie and then it was followed by clips from the film showing these things.

I also remember some great making of stuff.

Yeah, the DVD has the best most detailed "making of" feature of any of the Disney Platinum Editions. It just didn't capture the excitement that this TV special did. The TV special showed the long lines and interviewed the people who just saw it. It gave you a look at the people in the early 90's and how it felt to be in the middle of the Disney Renaissance. It really gave you an idea of how exciting it was when this movie was released and I really missed that on the DVD.

OK, I think I found out what it was.

The Making of Aladdin: A Whole New World

It was made in 1992 and seems to be a 30 min 'making of' TV special that the Disney Channel used to make (this one hosted by John Rhys-Davies). They also made The Making of The Little Mermaid in 1989 (hosted by Alyssa Milano), The Making of Beauty and the Beast in 1991 (hosted by David Ogden Stiers, only available on the Laserdisc), The Making of The Lion King in 1994 (hosted by Robert Guillaume), The Making of Pocahontas: A Legend Comes to Life in 1995 (hosted by Irene Bedard) and The Making of Disney's The Hunchback of Notre Dame in 1996 (hosted by Jason Alexander). I think they stopped making them after that and I don't believe any of these outside of Pocahontas and Hunchback are available on DVD (some were replaced with far more extensive docs and Disney doesn't like repeating information).

While I love the new doc that was on the DVD, Diamond in the Rough: The Making of Aladdin, I'd still love to see this old one if for no other reason then nostalgia. The rest are online (I left links to those) but both the Aladdin and The Lion King ones have been removed from YouTube due to copyright claim and I can't find them anywhere. I think it's BS that they delete things off YouTube that they refuse to make commercially available to buy.

Any chance someone on here has the Aladdin one and they'd be willing to share? PLEASE!!!!

It is a Disney Channel special, but not the one you mentioned in your first post (with various people in line talking about the movie). I've never seen a "what the moviegoers are saying" documentary, though I do remember commercials from the time featuring various moviegoers singing "Friend Like Me", and I always remembered seeing some CHiPs-esque cops on motorcycles singing the line "To help you, dude!"

The one you found on imdb is basically this:

The Legend of Aladdin - Jon Rhys-Davies gives a background to Aladdin and Arabian Nights tales by showing brief clips from the silent The Thief of Bagdad and the B&W "Mickey in Arabia", before showing lots of clips from Aladdin.

Heroes & Sidekicks - Rhys-Davies talks about the good guys, with help from Ron Clements, Glen Keane, Mark Henn, John Musker, Duncan Marjoribanks, and Eric Goldberg, and clips aplenty

Villains & Harmers - Rhys-Davies talks about the bad guys, with help from Andreas Deja, Will Finn, Gilbert Gottfried, and clips aplenty

Illuminate the Possibilities - Mark Henn, Eric Goldberg, Ron Clements, and Glen Keane chat about the animation process, with more clips aplenty

A Whole New World - Alan Menken and Tim Rice talk about the music, then there's recording-session footage of "A Whole New World" with Brad Kane & Lea Salonga.

Conclusion - Rhys-Davies more or less says "Aladdin is great, I hope you'll watch it!"

Most of the footage from the documentary (minus the Rhys-Davies footage and his narration over clips) are on the DVD, and the DVD actually has more footage of the "A Whole New World" recording session.

I downloaded it from youtube before it was taken down, but I'll have to find it on my back-up drive.

The documentaries for Pocahontas and The Hunchback of Notre Dame are on the R1 DVDs.

There's also a MovieSurfers episode of Hercules that sort of acts as the Disney Channel special for the movie (it's on youtube too, I think), and BBFC lists Mulan: From Legend to Life as a program submitted by BVHE in 1998, so that may have been a Disney Channel special (I honestly don't remember if there any Mulan promotion on Disney Channel at the time). Neither are on their DVDs.

Maybe what I saw was this doc with those commercials sprinkled throughout and I just couldn't distinguish the two. Its been over a decade since I watched it but I think if I could see some footage it would jog my memory. Any chance you have those commercials too?

You know, what you're talking about does sound like a commercial to me. It seems like those kinds of commercials were popular for movies in the early 90's, interviewing lined-up people that had just seen the movie in question and were still psyched about it.

I definitely recall the special with Jon Rhys-Davies that aired on Disney Channel, but I doubt I still have the VHS I taped it on.

The Movie Surfers did a half hour special for Mulan. The last WDAS film to get a "making of" special was Tarzan, which was also from the Movie Surfers. All the films after that either got no promotion on the Disney Channel (The Emperor's New Groove) or just had brief "making of" interstitials (The Princess and the Frog).

I remember that Aladdin special and actually watched it on YouTube before it was removed. I wish Disney would include the ones from The Little Mermaid to The Lion King on DVD and BD. I realize they consider their new documentaries replacements, but these specials should be included for archival purposes. I don't see "Operation Wonderland" or "Four Artists Paint One Tree" getting dropped just because their respective films got retrospective "making ofs." The early 90s Disney Channel specials are just as important as those.

I could have sworn that there was a Rescuers Down Under one because on youtube I saw a video saying The making of TRDU and it looked like it was from 1990.

Yeah, well that is only 10 minutes in length and wasn't part of these 30 minute Disney Channel docs that featured celebrity hosts. I believe it was made for the Walt Disney Classics DVD released to the international market in 2003 but is absent from our regional Gold Collection DVD (any care to help me out with this?).

Well, I just downloaded it off MegaUpload from the link that stewie15 provided (MegaUpload is WAY faster then RapidShare for non-members). I suggest you get it that way. BTW, thanks stewie15!

Unfortunately, after just watching the video, I've determined that it isn't what I saw. What I saw was closer to the Oliver & Company one so maybe it was just something on The Wonderful World of Disney. Now I'm really pissed that I potentially thew out a rare commodity that I will probably never see again.
