Volume XV is here

And I didn't really get any new DVD today. I just wanted to start the thread. :P

ETA:
Technically, this thread was started on January 1, so it's true that I didn't get a new DVD that day. I got one the day before, December 31!

Buck Rogers (1939): 70th Anniversary Edition - released by VCI Entertainment, bought at MovieStop for $19.99

It's an excellent two-disc set containing the complete 12-chapter theatrical serial (9 chapters on the first disc, with the remaining 3 chapters and extras on the second disc), which starred Larry "Buster" Crabbe as Buck Rogers, Constance Moore as Wilma Deering, Jackie Moran as Buddy Wade, Anthony Warde as Killer Kane, C. Montague Shaw as Dr. Huer, and Philson Ahn as Prince Tallen. VCI really delivered the goods, providing a top-notch audio/visual restoration that is both a blessing and a curse. It's obviously a blessing because you're seeing the serial in the best quality possible (though the audio is still softer than I'd like), but at the same time, it's a curse as it also enhances and draws attention to just how serials were made back then. The serial's matte paintings, models, and effects (things we take for granted now) look a bit hokey by today's standards, even if they were a marvel to look at and groundbreaking back then. The serial is very exciting, it moves like gangbusters and you are able to overlook the production limitations of the time because you get immersed in the world they create. In "Buck Rogers" (and other serials of the time), it may look cheap and fake by today's standards, but still very believable.

In addition, there are a very nice selection of extras. VCI has provided the first two episodes of the longrunning radio series, a hilariously-awful (and once believed lost) "Buck Rogers" short film made for the 1933-1934 World's Fair, an 8-minute featurette/overview of the entire Buck Rogers franchise, a 26-minute audio lecture by Buster Crabbe (recorded in 1972) as he recounts his life and career (set to a great collection of photos and movie clips), a 4-minute montage of various "Buck Rogers" photos, and the half-hour "Buck Rogers" panel discussion from the 2009 San Diego Comic Con. Altogether it's nearly two hours of supplements!

And, just a couple of minutes ago I was going to start this one myself but I said to myself 'Noooooo. Let somebody with a new DVD/Blu do it'. Tsk. Tsk.

Actually, I did buy a DVD on New Year's Eve, but didn't post it because it was more funny at the time to be the one to start the "New DVD" thread without actually having a new DVD posted. I usually don't post whenever I get a new DVD unless I'm really excited for the DVD I got, and I was actually really excited to get it, so in retrospect, I really should've posted that I bought it when I started the new thread.

Since I now feel guilty for starting the new thread without including my new DVD, I'll edit my first post to include it. :P

If anyone has a witty enough subtitle to include for this latest edition of New DVD/Blu-Ray Thread, suggest it here! The best I could come up with was "Now Includes Digital Copy!" but that would be supporting Digital Copies and I'd rather not draw any more attention to them.

Silkwood, $6.99 at FYE - the price tags on it labeled the DVD as being used, but all 3 strips of security tape were still intact, and it was factory sealed (there was a stamp that said MGM/UA at the bottom of the shrinkwrap). Wonder why this was. Either way, I'm happy I finally found this OOP film I've been wanting to see.

Image
Everybody Loves Raymond: The Complete Fifth Season, $19.99 used at Newbury Comics - this was at a mall an hour away from us (so was the Silkwood purchase). I'm starting to think about this - at Best Buy these are $25 apiece and I need the last 4 seasons. Thats $100. I'm thinking maybe I'll dump seasons 1 - 5 after I'm done with season 5 and buy the complete series for $100 on Amazon, since it'll most likely take up less shelf space.

I just got the "Fantasia" anthology boxset!

But it had pretty bad disc rot. :(

Needless to say, it will be going back. In a couple of weeks, maybe I'll have a better one.

It started right in the middle of my favorite part, too... I seriously almost started to cry.

I know this isn't technically this thread(or On-Topic), but my Harry Potter 6 disc won't access half the Focus Point featurettes.

Not to mention the audio streaming troubles with the BD-Live commentary.

Insert Witty Subtitle Here

That's actually one of the wittiest I've seen so far!

I haven't bought anything in the new year yet, but my first purchases will be Trailer Park Boys: Countdown to Liquor Day, and/or Inglorius Basterds, and/or The A-Team Season 1.

Ok, in my quest to get Season 1 of The A-Team at Walmart (which they didn't have any seasons of), I ended up getting something else that was still part of Boxing Week sales. Break out the pastels and the Jan Hammer music:

These were $12.50 each.

Finally, after years of searching Pawn Shops, Yard Sales and Used DVD Sections at CD/DVD stores I found a copy of Fantasia: 60th Anniversary Edition. It was 5.99 at a thrift store. My Animated Classics DVD collection is now complete. :D
