So I’m a huge collector and I nearly have all of the Platinum releases with the exception of Sleeping Beauty and Pinocchio. I dabbled with the idea of getting Sleeping Beauty on Blu-ray because of the fact that I already have the Special Edition from 2003 but decided against that because it would make the Platinum line completely disjointed. Same thing goes for Pinocchio, as well as the fact that Pinocchio (for me at least) would be the least impressive of the releases. SB would rank up there as one that I’d want in high def.

I really want to finish what I started with the Platinum line on DVD but the thought has occurred to me that these could be the only releases on Blu-ray that the titles get. Highly unlikely considering they’ve each had two releases on DVD.

What do you guys think?

I bought the DVD of SB last fall when it came out, and I held on to my 2003 Special Edition. I know that Blu-Ray will eventually be the dominant format, and I don't want to miss out like I did with the DAC's on DVD, which is why I plan on buying both SB and Pinocchio on Blu-Ray as well before they go OOP. I still haven't picked up Pinocchio on DVD.

I doubt these releases will be the only Blu-Ray releases these titles will get, but it's probably going to be a while before they are released again. I would pick up the Blu-Rays, because if you don't, you might regret it later.

I think it was the right decision to stick with the DVD for Sleeping Beauty and Pinocchio.

However, I think you should start buying the Diamond Editions on Blu-Ray.

Yeah, I've pretty much decided that the Diamond Editions will be Blu-ray purchases. Beauty and the Beast and Fantasia/2000 are all titles that would look and sound amazing in high def.

I'm pretty much going to hold off and see what kind of deals there are for the Platinum DVDs on Black Friday and place an order then.

Should be some good deals on Black Friday.

If they go on sale before they go out of print, pick them up on Blu-Ray. If you are at all interested in commentaries, the Cine Explore feature is worth the money and when I compared the free DVD to the Blu-Ray, I could see a substantial difference (especially with Sleeping Beauty).

What I did was I bought both the DVD and Blu-Ray of Sleeping Beauty, but only the DVD of Pinocchio because it's not one of my favorites. But since the Diamond Collection is basically a Blu-Ray based line, I'm going to start picking up the Combo packs of each Diamond Edition release.

Keep in mind that the Blu-Ray releases come with a free DVD of the film anyways.

I still don't ever see Blu-Ray replacing or stepping ahead of standard DVD, until prices fall.

As I have stated before, I'm not a fan of Blue Ray. That said in the spirit of being non biased (or trying to anyway!), I'd say it depends on what is important to you. Things to keep in mind include:

-How many version of these films do you really need to own?

-How important is it to you to replace films you already own on DVD with Blue Ray?

-How well are you doing financially. Remember, "A fool and his money are soon parted."

-Why do you want to buy the Blue Ray? For collection reasons? Because you feel DVD will be completely bypassed eventually?

If it is really that important to you, then I say go for it. Or maybe if you feel like tempting fate, wait for Holiday Sales as I bet they may get dropped in price in a month or so. If it isn't that big of a deal, then don't waste your money and put it to better use somewhere else.

...which they will. I mean, remember the early days of DVD? Hell, remember the early days of VHS, where tapes were like $80? Prices will fall, and the major studios have too much invested in this for it to not eventually replace DVD. It's not going to end up like laserdisc. It's more practical and has a greater push.

That is so funny, I was thinking the same thing not so long ago lol. I am going to wait on them as well.

Yeah My dad told me that his first CD Player that he bought back in 1985 was for $500 and the CD of Elton John Yellow Brick Road was $60...now a days its $1 on a yard sale...

So yes....I also believe give it time...prices will fall on Blu Ray....I mean you can buy $10 blu rays of select few classics....none be from Disney...but there are some others of old classics....

Now what I don't expect to happen is one day we wake up and find out DVD has been dropped bing bang boom and now we're blu

Prices are already falling if you go over to amazon.com and check out some great deals.

The entire Planet Earth series for 42.00, Blade-Runner 5 disc for 20.00...2001 a Space Odyssey for 10.00! When DVD had been out for a couple of years prices were definitely not that low!

On a similar note, I personally remember when DVD players averaged around $700.

I bought both the DVD and the BD for Sleeping Beauty and to be honest, I think you should get both

Platinum Edition just isn't Platinum Edition without the DVD packaging! But if you want to actually watch and enjoy the movie, you should definitely get the BD. Pinocchio is a different story, I personally think the DVD is perfectly fine.

The 15 dollars Amazon was charging for Snow White on Blu-ray seems pretty low to me. It's now 20, and that's still low for a new release.

well first I think you opened up a can of worms with that DVD vs Blue-Ray topic title.

Second, I love the Blue-Ray format and find that Sleeping Beauty in particular looks stunning. Definitely worth it. But that's how I feel. I don't put much value in the whole "line" concept. Disney starts these lines only to mess them up a year later.

TBH I think blu-ray will be sticking around a lot longer than the DVD will have.

BD video quality is decent enough to look amazing on a projector screen upwards of 60" (granted, you sit the appropiate distance away). The (probable) sucessor of the BD disc, HVDs, and their required disc readers look as if they'll ever be useful for large scale companies. If people are having a hard time converting to BD thanks to the lack of BD burners, I think moving onto HVD (or whatever contender appears next) will be just as hard if not more.

Personally, I think TVs are getting too big nowadays. They look good for movies, but watching the simpsons or the news on a 50" screen seems like overkill.

Yeah...I agree....The Simpsons are never meant to be seen 50" although Idk although to that logic I would like to know what about The Simpsons Movie on Blu Ray ?

It's not overkill if you sit the appropriate distance away.

Prices definitely do fall... I bought the Planet of the Apes set for full price in January and now its half the price! ($50 CDN) My advice is that if you can wait... wait. If you cant find it in stores you'll find it on Amazon... but Blu Rays tend to stick around for the time being. They're trying to make their shelves full of those snazzy blue cases, lol.
