What's better to have?

I know this is sort of early, but I need to start thinking about this. Each Christmas we each get one big expensive gift in addition to our other gifts, and this year I can't decide what I want to ask for.
I could wish for an iPod since the iPod I had and loved for almost 3 years is completely dead and the people at Apple can't do anything to replace the battery (or so they said in The Apple Store). I love music and listen to it everyday, and it would be great to have, since I've been using a portable CD player from 2003.
Or I could wish for a Blu-Ray player for my room. I have a 32" HDTV, but no surround sound. I've been wanting a Blu-Ray player for a while now, and now that the prices for Blu-Ray discs have started to drop a little bit I'm thinking maybe I want one.
The dilemma is, I'm going away to college in less than a year (September 2010), so if I ask for a Blu-Ray player I won't really have much time with it, and I would prefer not to bring an expensive TV and Blu-Ray player off to college with me.
What would you do if you were in my situation?

Ask for whichever is most expensive, then save money from here till then so you can buy yourself the less expensive of the two.

I have both luckily, but to be honest I barely find myself using my iPod ...I have it hooked up to my car, but beyond that nothing.

I have both also, but only recently got a blu-ray player... soooo my answer is ipod..... because I LIVE for music and I can't go a couple of days without my ipod....

It depends on what you want more. If you want to listen to music on the go, then get an Ipod. If you are more into watching movies in better quality, then get a Blu-Ray player.

It depends what you do more often...listen to music or watch movies. The batts in iPods do wear down after a period of time (my brother's has the same problem).
I'd go with the iPod. Blu-ray technology is getting cheaper all the time and you'll probably be able to easily buy one yourself before the end of next year.

^ I agree with this completely!
.....and, from what you said in your post "DisneyFreak5282" it makes more sense to go with the iPod. You love your music, you listen to it daily, you haven't had one in 3 years and you don't plan on taking a Blu-Ray player with you when you move to college. So I say iPod, it seems like a wiser choice!!!
I'm sure (like "Cordy_Biddle" said) Blu-Ray players will reduce in price significantly during the next few years. Plus, when you finally do decide to get one when they are lower in price, you'll have money left over to buy something else too, as suppose to getting one now, where you may not have any spare change left from buying one at the price it is now.

I say go for the iPod. It's easier to use (as in it's easier to carry around), and it seems like you would put it to better use than a Blu-Ray Player.

Thanks everyone for your input! I will probably ask for the iPod, because, like someone had stated, the Blu-Ray technology is always getting cheaper so very soon I'll be able to afford it by myself. Now the decision is - which kind of iPod I want. I'm used to the Classic format, but I'm thinking maybe I want an iTouch. Decisions, decisions...

Oh, no - what I meant was I've had my iPod for almost three years when it broke (which was about a month ago). Dear God, I don't know WHAT I would do if I had to go three years without an iPod!

Go for the iTouch. It's more bang for your buck, you get way more out of it than a normal iPod, me thinks.

^ Agreed! Go for the touch. I have one and now I'll never go back to anything else, I don't know where I'd be without it

Ipod....so many more uses for it. You can bring it everywhere, you can put music and movies on it. BluRay, you are very limited. Plus the cost difference is huge.

iPod. Personally, I would also say go for the iPod classic. Yeah, you get apps with the touch and internet providing you're getting wifi from somewhere, but you get a whole lot more memory on the classic (I think it tops off at 160 gb) and still does movies / photos.

I would go with the Blu-ray player.

The clear answer is iPod - so I voted for Blu-Ray Player. Because you could sell it, buy an iPod with the money you get and still have some left over.

I have neither of these gadgets, but I chose the I-pod. Because I can imagine that I would like to listen to some of my own music when I'm on the way (not on a bike, that's too risky) or working out.
A Blue Ray-player seems to me an superfluous luxury if you already have 2 good working dvd-players (one is purchased for multi-region play) just because you want to see a sharper image and more extras. Does the blue-ray player have a record option by the way? If not, or if it's very expensive in that case, I will not consider buying one now or in the near future.

Blu-ray recorders are very much non-existent until next year, BUt since I watch movies more than I listen to music, I'd go with that.
But the iTouch is a good choice for iPod. Like an iPhone without the Phone.

I'd go for an iTouch myself. I really loved the one I had until we sold it so I could upgrade to an iPhone.

So many games and applications you can add in addition to all your favorite music, photos, videos, etc. Plus I just love the size of the screen (and the fact that it's a touch screen is just bonus).

What's better to have?
Your health. Food on the table. Clothes on your body. Friends. Family. A good education. Peace.
Oh, the question was about luxuruous crap nobody needs? Sorry, can't help you there.

Really? You can buy friends with money?

Or is that just how you do it?
Seriously, a nice member of the forum was asking a simple question. There is no need for you to come in here and criticize him for that. Thanks.
