Very... interesting that they're going ahead with season 20 right after 12.

But if it comes out in December or January that'd be awesome! I'm so sick of waiting so long in between releases! (wasn't it over a year between season 10 and 11?).

I'm excited to get it on Blu-ray, that'll be cool!

In my own humble opinion, this show has outlasted its originality. The storylines lately have only been rehashes of what was done before, and they haven't aged the kids one day since the series started. And why would they bring season 20 before they bring 13-19?? Baffles me why anyone thinks this show is funny anymore. :o :o

I agree. I watched a few episodes of the series in maybe 2004 and liked some of it. I liked it well enough to go out and give the first few seasons a try on DVD. I really loved them, and it became my second favorite animated sitcom (behind Family Guy, which is starting to decline in quality too). Fast forward to two years ago, when I bought season 10 on DVD. I had been catching the then-current episodes on and off but also watching the series on DVD in order. Season 10 was just unbearable for me to watch. Plain awful. I finished it eventually (hey, I paid for it, why not finish it), and bought season 11 on DVD the following year. It was pretty sucky, but better than season 10. Fast forward again to two months ago, I picked up season 12 on DVD and I just finished disc 1 yesterday. I like it so far, and I think it's the best since season 9.

I'm glad they're releasing season 20 onto DVD hopefully this winter. Maybe this will get Fox to change their release patters. Maybe during the spring we'll get season 13, then over the summer season 21, and throughout season 22 and during the summer before 23 perhaps they will attempt to get caught up and try to release 14 - 19 as well as 22, and then maybe we'll see one release each summer - the current season. That's just my hope. Or maybe they'll get crazy and release two of the seasons on the same date. Who knows.

That's a very odd move by Fox. I'll buy it on DVD though.

I MIGHT buy it when it goes on sale for 19.99. I thought this season was mediocre overall. I am getting tired of these stupid trilogy episodes (Not counting the Treehouse of Horrors) and a lot of the plots were just bland and rehashed as dvdjunkie had already stated. It seems weird that they are skipping about 7 seasons ahead (Though it may have something to do with the 20th anniversary of the show).

I still think season 14 is one of the worst seasons of The Simpsons ever!

I think the reason they are skipping ahead is because of the recent move of the Simpsons in HD. I think Season 20 was the first season that aired in HD, so they skipped ahead for the Blu-ray release.

So what are the odds that this could come out before xmas, or the week after? I mean we have cover art now, all we need is a release date. This could be beneficial, we get both a past season and current season all in one year. New season would be released in the fall/winter, and the past season in spring.

Guhhhhh it's too much to ever want seasonal cover art to be consistent anymore. Which I know it really hasn't since they began the head packaging and then since they began the horrible "eco" packaging, but... still. At least it's classy. I also like the Tracy Ullman Homer and Marge on the spine. Nice touch.

...you had me up until there. Did you really expect them to age? Is anyone who no longer watches the show now doing so because Bart is still 10? Seriously. I know it's wild and unnatural, but animated characters sometimes do not age as we real live people do. I note that Morty and Ferdie haven't aged since the 30's... has anyone griped about that?

and to further the theory that cartoons don't age... Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles just because they are 25 are not in community college of martial arts......

or Donald Duck just because he is 75 isn't doing stand in for AFLAC

I think that maybe seasons 13 - ?? will carry on the tradition of the character head boxes, and once they are done with those at whatever season (18, 19 or earlier), they will go back to the standard box art like they did with season 20. That's just my guess though.

I do like the "eco" packaging, though. The one for season 12, at least. It's thinner, and season 11's eco packaging was terrible, but with season 12 they put the glossy effect on the trays so the discs don't get scratched. Plus, with an ongoing series like "The Simpsons" it's probably wiser to slim down the packaging a bit.

I don't mind slimmer packaging, but paper slips are just asking for a disc to get scratched. If "Ugly Betty" can re-release the six discs of S1 in a standard-width DVD case, surely "The Simpsons" can do it for four discs.

That's the beauty of animations, the characters are ageless, and its one of the main reasons why the Simpsons have been around for so long. Marge will always be Marge (no matter how many times she appears on Playboy :p ), Homer will always be Homer, Lisa will be Lisa, Bart will be Bart, etc. They are able to retain their personalities without age getting in the way.

Now take live action sitcoms, especially family sitcoms. The kids DO get older, so they begin to lose their charm and the stories change drastically. Then they add unnecessary characters to fill in the void (like Nicky and Alex on Full House) and the show goes down the drain.

Animated characters have that advantage, they stay forever young as long as the creator approves of it. The only thing that changes is the voice actor, and there are so many talented actors that can fill the voids.

So long story short, I agree that the show last lost quality in its 20 year run, the characters never aging is not one of the reasons.

I really hope they have commentaries on all episodes, I can't imagine why they wouldn't, but it would really suck considering they've done that with seasons 1-12.

I wonder if they'll re-release the the already-released DVDs on Blu-ray. I'd re-buy 'em. Simply because they'd probably take up less space, and Blu-ray discs are more scratch-resistant than DVDs.

Something tells me that they arent going to given how quickly theyve announced and are planning to release this.

No commentaries = No buy from me

I believe this is a bad idea... just to prove it, if you enjoyed the majority of Season 20, use this :excellent: icon. I'd say :excellent:
