I am about to go see Ponyo today and the thought just dawned on me that I don't remember the last time I wet to see a traditionally animated film in theaters (from any studio.) The last one that pops into my head is Howl's Moving Castle way back in 2005. Has there been anything since then which I am just not remembering or has it really been that long?

Curious George from 2006 comes to mind, as does The Simpsons Movie from 2007 and Perseopolis from last year (a French animated film set in Iran). There are probably a few more, but I've forgotten them. :P

And of course, there's Enchanted, though being mainly a live-action film, I guess that we're not including that in the mix.

Okay, I stand corrected. Since I loved both of them, I can't believe I forgot Persepolis and Waltz with Bashir. But I do think Ponyo represents the first time since Howl that a fully animated four-quadrent animated family film has appeared (Curious George is fun, but doesn't quite reach adults in the same manner as Miyazaki does.)

The Simpsons Movie is the last MAJOR 2D movie that comes to mind. But luckily after Ponyo, the next one will be only be a few months from now.
