I just found out today, that as part of my city's 50th anniversary, they are having a 50s film festival, and they will be showing Sleeping Beauty. I used to work at this theater, and have always dreamed of watching a classic Disney movie in it (it was built in the 40s) and I was surprised to see they had such good taste as to pick this! lol.

It's Des Moines, WA a south of Seattle suburb. Yeah, this theater is really cool, built in the 40s, its a single screen independent theater that my family went to over the years for three generations. I hadn't been in to work for a few months, so I didn't know what films they had chosen until I saw at the library a flyer today.. I was shocked to see 1959's Sleeping Beauty on there! Needless to say it'll be a great experience to see it on the big screen, in a nostalgic setting. They're also showing:

North by Northwest

Attack of the 50 foot woman

Gunfight at the O.K. Corral

It happened at the World's fair (because of the local connection, I'd suppose, lol)

Is it able to show it in 70mm or will it just be 35mm?

Sweet! Hope you are able to make it since the only way to see classic Disney films in theaters is to hope Disney shows them at The Capitan when their DVD releases are near.

Pap Yeah! I'll be there for sure, its Wednesday night and I've got a couple friends coming along. I haven't seen a classic Disney movie in theaters since the 1991 re-release of 101 Dalmatians. I'm so excited!


Too bad they don't have vintage movie posters to go with the films.. that would be amazing! (apparently pretty much everything related to any film shown there has been saved for decades!)


Speaking of theatrical re-releases, I noticed on wikipedia (not the most reliable source, I know) that Sleeping Beauty had many re-releases:

"The film was re-released theatrically in 1970, 1979 (in 70mm 6 channel stereo, as well as in 35 mm stereo and mono),1986, 1993, 1995, and had a limited release in 2008"


I do remember in the mid-90s (so most likely the '93 one I'm guessing) they had trailers for the re-release, I remember really looking forward to seeing it as a kid, because I'd seen the trailer run in front of a Disney film I'd seen in theaters, and on VHS tapes... and then, it never came out. Perhaps it was only in limited release then? I'm certain I wouldn't have missed it. I'm wondering if it was some sort of regional thing, or if it was just canceled for some reason. Or.. maybe I just have a terrible memory. I was a very observant kid, and I was something of a Disney buff even back then. Yes, I liked their movies as a kid, but I adored Disney on another level even back then - I was interested in the history and the animation. Well, at least I've got my chance to see it now

Also curious as to whether there were any variations through out the different releases and prints? I'd be curious to see if I could tell which print/release I'm watching, I guess the only way I'd really be able to tell is if the label looks distinctly old.

I'd love to see a classic ANIAMATED film in a theater but there is a theater in Michigan that I want to go to that will, over the course of a few weekends, be soon showing films like, The Shaggy Dog, In Search of the Castaways, The Apple Dumpling Gang, The Muppets Take Manhattan and lots of old films that don't relate to Disney at all. I'd say these may be worth a trip to the US.


I found a great website last year that tells me every time a theater in the Detroit area shows an old movie. That's how I came to see The Muppet Movie, The Frog Prince, and lots of other fun Muppet things last summer on the big screen. I get sad when I think that I recently missed a showing of Mary Poppins but then remember.... I was in Disneyland at the time!

Wow! it'd be cool to see Muppets stuff on the big screen. I'm a big Jim Henson fan. I might go see a screening of Labyrinth with special guest Karen Prell (best known for performing Red Fraggle) on Friday.
