Captain EO Officially Returning to the 'World'

It was 1984. Michael Jackson was as the height of his career. His 1982 album Thriller, already the best-selling album of all time, was still on the charts. In 1983, Jackson had debuted the moonwalk. His 1984 “Victory” tour played to sold-out stadiums. Michael Jackson wasn’t just a pop star. He was a cultural phenomenon.
Captain EO, starring the late Michael Jackson, debuted at Disneyland on September 18, 1986 and continuously ran until April, 1997. Due to the thousands of requests for its return via internet sites and calls, the “happiest place on Earth” just may bring back the 3-D musical and visual revolutionary 17 minute film.
In honor of the King of Pop’s tragic, untimely death and in honor of celebrated life, Captain EO could again grace the screen of the specially designed 500-seat theater, replacing the 10 year old Honey I Shrunk The Audience due to steadily declining interest.
The film was shot on 70 millimeter film and cost approximately $30 million to make and in 1986 that was an unbelievably extravagant budget for a “short film”. The film showcases two of Michael Jackson’s songs: “We are Here to Change the World” and “Another Part of Me”. It was directed by Francis Ford Coppola, executive-produced by George Lucas, choreographed by Jeffrey Hornaday, photography by Peter Anderson, produced by Rusty Lemorande, and written by Lemorande, Lucas and Coppola.

I think they should just release it on DVD and/or Blu-ray.

Kind of short to merit a DVD on its own (then again, look at "Destino"...). If it included "Magic Journeys" and "Honey, I Shrunk the Audience" as a sort of "3-D Theme Park Adventures" (lame title, I know), along with some documentaries about how each were made, I'd buy it.
I can see it fitting more into an entire Jackson-centric DVD release with more of his 80s music videos, though.
As for it returning to the park, I'm slightly for it, simply because I haven't seen it since 1991 and wouldn't mind the nostalgic factor. At the same time, I'm against it returning because, well, it's dated. Let Disney come up with a new 3-D show instead.

I'd rather it come out as a bonus feature on DVD/Blu-ray in the Moonwalker movie.

They could release it with bonus features like the TV special on the making of the movie and promotional ads/galleries, featurettes and commentary. A stand alone release could be done and on Blu-ray they could do it without the red/blue glasses.

Have they announced that Moonwalker is coming to Blu-ray/DVD?

No but I was just saying if Moonwalker movie does come out on dvd/blu ray (mostly it will) Captain EO should be on that disc.

I just saw the whole short film and I have to be honest... The film is cheesy as all hell.
I agree with Escapay in that the show is severely outdated. Considering we have 3D shows that not only look MUCH better they also have some form of physical interaction (spraying water, smells etc.) how can they expect EO to live up to that?
They would have to do a HUGE restoration job so it lives up to the other shows that came after it.

I may have missed something in the articles. But I know there is a good shot of it coming back to Disneyland. I have not heard or read anything about Epcot.

Coming back to Disneyland. Where is it mentioned that it is coming back to Disney World? The article you posted doesn't mention Disney World at all.

Even though there hasn't been an official announcement for WDW, I think there's a decent chance it could come to WDW, at least for a short run. Screamscape has reported that Imagineers have been spotted in the Epcot 3-D theatre, looking into what would have to be done to bring Captain EO back.
Personally, I'd love to see this happen for a year or so. As much as I enjoy HISTA (especially Quark, the dog!), I've seen it a lot more than I've seen EO, so it would be a nice change of pace and a nice tribute to give Captain EO another run.
Hopefully, we'll know something soon. Disney is expected to announce some of their future plans for Disneyland AND WDW at the D23 event in September, so maybe by then we'll know what's happening with EO.
Here is a link to the Screamscape Epcot page (scroll down a few paragraphs to see the part about EO):

CaptainEO effects going in...

Per Al Lutz at Miceage...
...Honey I Shrunk The Audience will now be closed next week, Tues thru Thurs. WDI will be installing the Captain EO special effects to prepare the theater for Thur's private performance of the old show for Jay Rasulo and other bigwigs in Anaheim for the D23 Expo. Assuming Rasulo can find Tomorrowland (turn right in front of the castle) and no one in the audience has any objections to the show, Rasulo should then announce EO's January return during his Expo presentation on the 12th...
