I just saw a trailer of Earth (coming April 22, 2009 on Earth Day), and I was amazed. The movies looks beautiful! Who here is excited about this movie, and is it the same movie as Planet Earth on Blu-Ray?

It is not the same as "Planet Earth" on Blu-ray. However, in Europe the movie "Earth" was already released before and released on Blu-ray already under the title "Earth".
The movie "Earth" (as will be released on April 22 in the USA) is a theatrical cut of the material that was shot for the BBC television series "Planet Earth". I haven't seen the movie yet, but as far as I heard there are a few scenes that are not present (or in a different form present) in the television series, but most of the material is also seen in the television series "Planet Earth" as it is shown in the movie "Earth".

I'm very excited for the movie. After the trailer came out, I watched all of Planet Earth. It was interesting to recognize shots from the trailer in the series. If the movie is half as good as the show, it will be a great movie.

The part of the narrator, played by Patrick Stewart in the UK version has been replaced by James Earl Jones in the DisneyNature version.

ANYWAY..... I have never seen an episode of Planet Earth but AM very excited to see the film.

Ohmigosh, Mufasa ate Bambi's dad and snagged the narrator job in the DisneyNature version! (Patrick did the voice for Bambi's father in Bambi 2)

I haven't seen this answered...Are Earth and the forthcoming DisneyNature films going to be shown in mainstream theaters with a wide release or will they be relegated to art houses and specialty theaters? (Or in practical terms, will we have to travel far or near to see them, lol)? I wanted to see Morning Light, but it wasn't playing in more than a handful of theaters nationwide.

Are we sure the two films are exactly the same otherwise? As in same runtime and identical shot for shot?

Well, there's a problem here...Planet Earth has aired several times on cable, it has been available on Blu-Ray and DVD for over a year, and now comes the 90 minute version of something you've probably already seen or already own? And they expect people to pay to see the short version?

They must have their sights and expectations set really low on this one. Not exactly a reboot of the glory years of the True-Life Adventures.

Who distributed it in the UK?

And chances are the runtime (if it's the same thing) will show as being 4% less, because of "PAL speedup".

Just to clarify, Disneynature's Earth WAS filmed by Alastair Fothergill, who did produce BBC's Planet Earth but there are definitely differences from the series. It does use some footage from the show, but most of it hasn't been seen before. And the movie revolves around following the lives of 3 wildlife families - polar bears (my favorite because they're the cutest), whales and elephants. The movie will have the same type of amazing imagery that Planet Earth's been known for, but it's definitely not things you've seen before. Not to mention, watching this on the big screen will be a very different experience than watching on tv (no matter how awesome my 50 inch hdtv is!)

I'm pretty sure they're releasing it wide. I checked their website and it looks like it'll be playing at my local theater. Sweet - no long treks!!

I don't know if this means it's wide but in my town, I checked within 15 miles, It was in 30 theateares.

The UK version of Earth (already out on DVD/blu-ray and narrated Patrick Stewart) is 99 minutes without PAL speed up.

If anyone knows the runtime of the Disneynature release, they that could probably confirm if it is exactly the same.

Hmm...it'd be interesting to find out if that's the same one, but regardless, since my viewing's been limited to seeing Earth on DVD, I'd still like to see how it goes over on the big screen. I'm really curious to see all the new footage as well! Apparently there's some really amazing stuff in the movie that hasn't been shown in the series...and I really don't know how that's possible!

Well, according to Box Office Mojo, it seems like the movie being released in the US is the same one that was release overseas but then I read somewhere (sorry, I lost that link but will try to find it) that the movie was specifically re-edited for US audiences. They changed the narrator to James Earl Jones, aka Mufasa (how appropriate), and the narration as well (so the story is different too, I'm guessing). Basically, the movie will be something that hasn't been seen overseas or on DVD.

it looks interesting. It was the ONLY Disney related trailer I saw with Race to Witch Mountain yesterday.

Yeah, I noticed that too when I saw RTWM. Oh well, the trailer always amazes me - LOVE seeing the footage from the series in all its movie screen glory. Pretty appropriate that it's being released on Earth Day as well - a movie's a good way for people not normally into environmental causes to become more aware so I'm glad it's being released in normal theaters too!

So what do you mean by "normal theaters"? Is the film getting a wide release, or a limited one?

I think what the PP means by NORMAL theatres is "Its Not IMAX" which is usually limited release because not every state has an IMAX theatre and not every IMAX theater would play it.
