Yes, I have a DVD player, and even a Blu Ray player, but ever since I got my BD player, I really don't feel the need to pay over 20 bucks for a standard DVD, when I can just wait for a better looking BD instead. Unfortunately, it was only a few months ago, I really got into tradtional animation. While most of the Disney classics will undoubtedly be released on the format, the Platinum series has ensured that it will take a while (I've already bought Sleeping Beauty and plan to get Pinnochio and Snow White later this year.)

The standard Platinum DVDs look nice, but why waste 20-25 bucks if I can wait for a superior BD (Though I did shell out for Aladdin since it's one of my favorite films, and I already owned Ichabod and Mr. Toad)? I still would like to revisit some of these classic films from my childhood, and some titles that I've never even seen before, so I am considering going back and buying the old VHS copies. I've seen them in stores for under six bucks, and I really love the diamond-spined packaging.

But some titles were reissued later on in remastered "THX editions", is there really a big difference between those and the earlier releases?
What are some good looking VHS titles you'd recommend?

I don't see it so much as "going back to VHS", but rather getting them for almost the price of a rental, and watching them as a place holder until the definitive blu-ray edition comes out. With Disney's current DVD prices, I'd rather just wait for the BD, and get the VHS versions to hold me over.

Why not just check out the DVDs from the library?

Have you even tried some of Disney's DVDs on your Blu-Ray player? They look simply amazing to me. You can't compare it to a Blu-Ray that doesn't exist, and thus it'll look the best it can be (compared to VHS anyway!)

That being said, the VHSes are useful if you want the OTVs... or don't like the digital remastered colors... whatever, but just to save money I dunno. You can rent the DVDs, or get them from a library... Plus, between you and me, half of the DACs are over 50 years old which means they're considered "public domain" in countries like Canada... I would see nothing wrong with copying the DVDs of the movies up to Lady and the Tramp from rentals! (Though yes in the USA it technically is "illegal"... but seeing as how nobody has any proof where the DVD-Rs would have been burned... there's really not much anybody can do...)

I was in a similar position as you. Only, instead of wondering if I should get INTO VHS, I wondered if I should get OUT.
