I was hoping someone in this forum could tell me wich of the 'anothology features' from the 1940's are edited? I still need "Make Mine Music", "Ichabod & Mr Toad" and "Saludos Amigos"... Of the other three (Melody Time, Three Caballeros, Fun & Fancy Free) I own the dutch (R2) versions. And im almost 100% sure they're unedited. How is that with the others, because I've read somewhere the R1 "MMM" is missing an entire scene

thanks in advance

From the handy dandy FAQ of this site:
What Disney movies are edited for DVD?
Make Mine Music has a scene ("The Martins and the Coys") removed. Segments of Melody Time and Saludos Amigos have been edited to remove cigarettes. (The Region 2 DVD of Melody Time is unedited.) Lastly, while the Fantasia DVD releases preserve the full Roadshow cut, a few brief segments of the "Pastoral Symphony" sequence have been zoomed and digitally edited. For more specifics, Widescreen.org has an article

Treasure Island (1950). I just watched the region 1 DVD today. Although it is a great film and highly recommended for fans of classic live action Disney, from what I've read on the internet it is a censored version. Supposedly a scene of someone getting run over by a coach has been removed. It was definitely not in the version I just watched. Can anyone confirm this? I never saw the film before today.

While I can't speak to the specifics of the scene to which you are referring, the DVD should be the complete uncut version. There was a heavily edited version in circulation for many years. When the film was originally released in 1950, the MPAA ratings board didn't exist. When the studios decided to re-release Treasure Island in 1975, they were appalled when the ratings board branded it with a "PG" rating. No Disney film had ever carried that rating. So they edited out 9 minutes of the most graphic violence to get their beloved "G" rating. In 1992 the film was restored to its original cut.

It would be really great if you would check it out. Since im considering buying the uk edition, wich im not sure is edited or not, couldnt find it in the article. Anyway, when I buy a classic I wanna know for sure I get it in the best possible way. I really hate the way Disney is messing with consumers...

Re: Treasure Island. A post at the IMDb refers to this scene: "the death of Pugh under the coach wheels". This scene is definitely not in the DVD. Maybe someone can refer to the Japanese laserdisc, which is uncensored, for the definitive answer.

Ok, if it is the scene where Goofy is sitting on top of the hill on his horse, with his hand kind of hanging open....then it IS edited.
The cigarette is definitely not there.
It is a shame. I was lucky - I got this as a freebie, but I still just don't understand the rationale for these edits. Will seeing the characters with cigarettes send the children rioting in the streets?

I dont understand how a smoking goofy will encourage kids to smoke. I dont believe teenagers watch this and the really young ones wont even be aware of what it is.... imagine kids on the playground: "hey people, goofy smokes too, its cool!"

Luckily Pacos Bill still has his cigarette, I tink it's wrong to mess with classic films this way...

Thanks for checking it out though

They should have to different releases one that is edited and one that is not edited so we could buy which one we want to.
That would be more fair for everyone.

Hey I just saw Goofy smoking a cigarette in "Two Gun Goofy", the bonus cartoon on the R1 Apple Dumpling Gang DVD. Where is the huge public outcry? Are the masses returning The Apple Dumpling Gang because their kids have suddenly started to emulate Goofy? This proves just how hypocritical Disney is when it comes to Saludos Amigos.

It´s always the same problem: political correctness. It´s so naive to think that you can change history belated. I also finally expect Disney to distinguish between family stuff and collectors stuff. Cause then there wouldn´t be any problems with "worried parents" complaining about what is good for their children and what not. Disney just would be able to answer: Sorry, you bought the wrong edition. So, it is time for a "real" unedited collectors edition of Saludos Amigos/The Three Caballeros on dvd. They did it on the laserdisc edition I own watching Goofy smoking.

it´s just movie history, like SOTS, like Victory Through Air Power. I´m a German, I love Disney making fun of the Nazis (e.g. "Der Fuehrer´s Face"), they were stupid and utopian. Without his film efforts during the war time Disney possibly wouldn´t have been able to survive that period that ended with the resurvival of the golden era by producing "Cinderella"!

The editing of these films makes me furious.
It's just ridiculous. Kids see people smoking all the time...on TV or in real life. You can't blame anyone else, especially not a fictional character for "setting a bad example". People are responsible for the decisions they make.
Maybe parents should make an effort to teach their children about the hazards of smoking, instead of expecting a Disney DVD to babysit/teach their kids. And Disney(Eisner) shouldn't be so afraid of possible public outcry. But of course they wouldn't want to alienate anyone and lose potential sales, right?
Too bad Disney(Eisner) doesn't care about losing *our* sales. The fans, the film purists, who want to see these movies uncensored, as they were originally meant to be seen!
If there are kids out there who idolize Goofy
so much that they decide to start smoking, just 'cause they saw Goofy do it... shouldn't we censor
all of Goofy's cartoons? We wouldn't want these impressionable youngsters to start emulating Goofy's hazardous way of skiing...or playing baseball... or... you get the idea.
There's a Goofy short from 1951 called "No Smoking"... synopsis from
Big Cartoon Database : Goofy tries a number of ways to give up smoking.
See kids, Goofy may be an addict, but he's trying to quit! Really he is! He's actually a
positive role model for smokers everywhere who are struggling to kick the habit.

That´s exactly my opinion.

But I´ve a solution for Disney and the poor worried mothers who are calling now for 76 years!!!!!!!! (e.g. to tell Disney what they expect!!! Mickey Mouse to do and not do): Just release all movies unedited and put a sticker on the dvd-box (like cigarette-boxes): Be careful, this dvd could do harm to your child cause his favorite chartoon character is smoking

Dear Parents, if something isn´t good for the psyche of your kid - don´t buy it. There is enough Disney child food released on DVD

Did they just take out the brief segment where he is actually run over? Or did they remove all indication of his death?

This is weird... I though the DVD was complete! What a shame...
Well, before buying this DVD I had never seen the movie before, so I can't say anything about the scene.
