I've come to learn that many of the television series I watch I got into because a friend recommended them to me.

If you're into the teen drama stuff, i like the OC better than Gossip Girl. I like the witty humor and smart dialogue, and the first season is really good. I still watch Gossip Girl from time to time, but I'm not as into it as I am with the OC.

Shows Currently Watch and Recommend:

One Tree Hill - it's my fave show and it's introduced me to a lot of amazing musicians i wouldn't have heard of otherwise.

Doctor Who - Amazingly awesome. ask Escapay for details since he introduced me to it.

How I Met Your Mother - Neil Patrick Harris is hilarious. The cast is awesome. And it's one of the very very few shows where I can watch an episode more than five times.

Big Bang Theory - awesome cast chemistry, hilarious cast, and really funny if you're a science person (like me, Kram, and our dad) who can understand all the "mumbo jumbo" that come from Sheldon's mouth.

Leverage - because it's a new show, sometimes there are minor holes in the script, but you hardly notice them the first time watching. but, i think it's really good - sort of a Robin's Hood meets Ocean's Eleven

Other Good Scripted Shows:
Smallville
Supernatural
Heroes (first season)
iCarly (i know it's Nik, but it's funny)
Wizards of Waverly Place

"Real, but not Reality" TV shows I enjoy and wish I had time to watch more often:
Junkyard Wars (Science ch)
Good Eats (Food Network)
Mythbusters (Discovery ch)
Cash Cab (Discovery ch)

And finally - Shows that were recommended to me and I really want to watch but I haven't had time to watch them yet:
The Tudors
Dexter
Flight of the Conchords

I'm just doing this because we're waiting for Escapay to watch a movie with. He's probably somewhere in another thread typing away...Also, I'm trying to beat my sister with tv show recommendations, haha (she should be posting shortly before/after me).

My recommendations:

Ace of Cakes - On Food Network, this show NEVER gets old and you don't have to worry about catching up or watching all the old episodes first. It's an Actuality show (not fakey reality TV game show/watch my life crap, but real life people doing real things with their lives). You watch Chef Duff and his friends make outrageous cakes at their bakery (Charm City Cakes) in Baltimore. They always never fail to surprise me with what they create (my favorite is a stack of french toast with a french mouse peeking out of it) and the fact that they actually make what the clients want. Also, they have really fun personalities that make the show more than just a show about cakes.

Wizards of Waverly Place - I second Mason's top choice. It's standard Disney Channel faire, but it reminds me of the uniqueness of tweenage shows the Disney Channel can offer. It may seem pretty ridiculous on the surface, but it's very entertaining and the chemistry of the family members is very refreshing and not too overly sappy or ridiculous as Hannah Montana or Life with Derek. The "spells" are a little corny, but the stories and dialogue is always fun and never dry.

Big Bang Theory - This is really smartly written smart comedy! The writers make sure to take advantage of every geek stereotype there is. I really enjoy this show and it's very different than your average sitcom since it features types of people you don't really see Hollywood as choosing to be the main stars. Sheldon is my favorite character because he has the best one liners, even though they're rather long, and they really do make sense when you think about them. In the 1st season Halloween episode, he dresses up as the Doppler Effect and it's hilarious!

Doctor Who - Ummm...just watch it and you'll be happy you did. Ask Escapay or Netty (2099net) for details.

For those interested go to the Doctor Who Discussion thread and go back a couple pages to where I asked where to start on Doctor Who, Scaps and Netty posted a bunch of great places to start. :)

I don't think I can really recommend anything since I don't watch t.v that often anymore  Plus most of my suggestions are probably already listed here.

TV Shows that are currently on the air that I recommend (in no particular order):

Chuck
Burn Notice
LOST
Brothers & Sisters
Heroes
Battlestar Galactica

TV shows that I enjoyed that I'd recommend and are already over or almost over (in no particular order):

Alias
Ed
Murder She Wrote
X-Files
Stargate: SG-1
Stargate: Atlantis
Moonlighting

Series that were VERY short and therefore are easy to watch the complete series quickly. However, these shows are STILL very good shows and warrant a recommendation:

Commander in Chief
Wonderfalls
Nightstalker (the new one - I know I get a lot of flack for liking it)

I'm sure there's more, but those are the ones right off the top of my head.

The only current shows I've watched are Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles and Scrubs.

Scrubs is an amazing show! Rent the season boxsets, it's probably the best of all medical shows! (And I'm currently watching the new season on ABC)

I'll also give a description, since I think that's more informing and interesting than just listing titles. You have to explain *why* a show is worth watching.

Life

The only police/crime series worth watching. It stars Damian Lewis, whom you might know from Band of Brothers. He plays Charlie Crews. He's a cop (detective) who's been in prison for 12 years for a murder he didn't commit. He was released and cleared of all charges and given millions of dollars as compensation, yet he still got back to work at his old police department. He wants to figure out who set him up and why. This is interesting, because each episode features a case which is exciting in its own way, while there's always the back story of Charlie figuring out the conspiracy which got him to jail. Time in jail has affected Charlie. He's become very philosophical, yet his partner is very down-to-earth. This also provides a lot of comedy to the show. I would say this show is unique in its portrayal of its characters, the way it is filmed, the designs/lay-out/editing, the acting is outstanding, there's humor everywhere...

Just check it out! 8)

There have been some good suggestions already in the thread:
American Dad
Bones
Chuck
Dead Like Me (from the creator of Pushing Daisies, I want to see it.)
Dexter
Family Guy
Firefly
Futurama
Heroes
Life
Monk
Scrubs
The Simpsons
South Park
Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles
Wonderfalls (from the creator of Pushing Daisies, I want to see it.)

Psych! is a great fun detective show, about the son of a cop who uses what his dad taught him to solve crimes as a fake "psychic." If you like Monk, you would probably like this one.

Dexter (already mentioned) is a show about a serial killer who works for the police as a blood spatter expert, and hunts other serial killers. This one has some dark humor in it.

Dinosaurs is a great lifesize "muppet" show.

Eerie Indiana is a fun kid's show about a town where anything can happen.

Pushing Daisies was recently cancelled, and it about broke my heart!
:( It was a great show!

NCIS is one of the funner police procedural/CSI style shows... The team is almost like a family, and they each have their own quirks.

Of course, you would expect me to recommend

Doctor Who

so I won't. But I will recommend

The Sarah Jane Adventures - watch that and wonder how all the dross that is the Disney Channel live-action series actually get greenlit.

As for other shows, I'll stick to the UK but available on US DVD. Hey, being UK, they're short runs!

Clatterford - or Jam and Jerusalem as its known in the UK. Really, one of the best, if not the best feelgood TV series ever. Every single episode is just so full of character wonderfully acted by a mostly mature, but experienced cast. I really do love it.

Skins - the show that warped Escapay's mind, its so explicit. The first few episodes are so-so, but it builds up to a hell of a climax at the end of S2. S3 is coming soon, with an All-New cast.

Knowing Me, Knowing You with Alan Partridge - A-Ha! Some will say this is the height of British comedy. Ever....

Nighty Night - ...but I prefer stuff like this. A comedy so black its a surprise it was ever made. 5 years in the making, it is pure perfection. S2 came out 18 months later and was a mega disappointment. If you watch this, stick to S1 only. The story ends. No more needs to be said.

Big Train - This could be the finest sketch show ever. Forget Monty Python, Big Train is bursting with ideas and surrealism. I still laugh out loud every time I see an episode, and I've seen them all about 20 times now. Oh, and the DVD menus are superb.

Extras - worth it just for Patrick Stewart's cameo ('but by then, I've seen everything'). A word of praise for the Xmas special. It's a perfect example of a movie, not just a seasonal excuse for merriness. It really makes Andy unlikable before he redeams himself. And that's why I like Extras. It doesn't follow the unwritten rules of formula sit-coms. A US show would never, ever have the lead character act like such a git.

Not saying it's a bad show (different people react different), but I thought Skins was a little bit overdramatic and I couldn't get into it.

Anyway, I haven't watched the whole show (I need to start watching it too  ), but, from what I have seen, The O.C. is a really good show. I'm planning on buying the complete series DVD set sometime, but it shows on the SOAP network right now.

As for what I'd recommend, the only show I like to watch anymore is Desperate Housewives, but there's no guarantee that you'll like it, too.

I'm sorry if you disagree (and, again, I'm not an accurate judge of the show, as I haven't seen the whole thing), but I don't think humiliating me was exactly necessary.

But maybe I'm biased because I liked a few of the actors. Also, I wasn't saying it was "great" television, but I think it's passably entertaining for the most part.

Nah, I didn't mean to humiliate you. Sorry if it came across that way. It really did just make me laugh a lot, lol.

Here's some of my favourite shows that I think are worth checking out if you haven't already. I'd write more as I have a lot of shows to recommend, but for now, these three should be good...

"Doctor Who" (1963 to 1989, 1996, 2005 to present) - science fiction is not for everyone. It just isn't. And "Doctor Who" is proof. It's a smart and witty series that makes science fiction accessible to everyone, while at the same time still being true to its science fiction roots. Plus, it's got a rich history and a vast array of characters (some awesome, some not so awesome) and you never know what to expect in each episode. It's likely easier for new viewers to start with the new series rather than try to get into the classic series. And I hope that new viewers do get into the classic series too, but that's not for everyone. Mainly because its pacing and its production design is not what most young viewers are used to.

Anyway, to discuss the new series, some of my favourite episodes are "The End of the World", "The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances", "The Girl in the Fireplace", "Rise of the Cybermen/The Age of Steel", "Human Nature/The Family of Blood", "Blink", "The Sontaran Stratagem/The Poison Sky", and "Midnight". I'll likely get a lot of flak for enjoying the Sontaran story as much as I do, but it's a favourite. The one problem (well the only one I have, I can overlook a lot of its problems) is that they should have given Martha more interaction with the Doctor (it's even worse in "The Doctor's Daughter", and practically non-existent in "The Stolen Earth/Journey's End").

The series is currently on a season break, with four specials to be broadcast in 2009/early 2010, and a new full series (Series Five / Series Thirty-One) begins in Spring 2010. And it's being headed by Steven Moffat, who's written some of the best "Doctor Who" episodes of the new series. For anyone who wants to catch previous series, about half of the classic series is currently on DVD (with most of the Sixth Doctor's stories already released, he's an underrated Doctor IMO, and is my third favourite from the classic series), and the first four seasons of the new series is on DVD as well. In addition, it's on BBC America and SciFi Channel (though never at the same time). There's also two spin-offs, "Torchwood" and "The Sarah Jane Adventures" which I recommend with as much enthusiasm as I recommend "Doctor Who".

"How I Met Your Mother" (2005 to present) - awesome. Completely awesome. Better than "Friends". Better than "Seinfeld". Not as good as "I Love Lucy" or "The Golden Girls", but close. Where else can you find Canadian ex-teenage pop stars, suiting up, slap bets, baskiceball, soothing dog paintings, and Ted-with-a-Tramp-Stamp? I'd say more, but that means you're spending time reading this instead of watching it! Go watch it! The show is in its fourth season, and airs on CBS Mondays at 8:30. DVDs are readily available for the first three seasons and are highly recommended.

"Jack and Bobby" (2004 to 2005) - a well-written and endearing family/teen drama about two brothers, Jack and Bobby McCallister (Matt Long and Logan Lerman), one of which will grow up to become the President of the United States in 2041. In the meantime, they have to survive high school. Jack is a popular cross-country runner while Bobby is an asthmatic nerd. The two don't always get along, but still love each other regardless and both try to put up with their loose cannon of a mother, Grace McCallister (Christine Lahti), a history professor at the fictional Plains State University. In addition to the McCallisters, other regulars on the show include Marcus Ride (Edwin Hodge), Jack's best friend and fellow runner, and Courtney Benedict (Jessica Pare), the future first lady and daughter of Peter Benedict (John Slattery), the new dean of Plains State University.

I've never forgiven the WB for cancelling the show, and always feel it was the network's biggest mistake. The following seasons for TheWB actually had dropping ratings (perhaps bad karma for cancelling "Jack and Bobby"?), and eventually they had to merge with UPN to make one network. If WB kept "Jack and Bobby", perhaps it would still be a thriving network today, and the series would be in its fifth season right now.

If you want to watch the series, it is currently available on ComcastOnDemand (a few episodes at a time though), or you can stream episodes online:

"Jack & Bobby" Full Episodes on TheWB.com

"Freaks and Geeks" -- This is, by far, my favorite television series ever. It has 18 hour-long episodes. It's a dramedy set in a small town/suburban high school in Michigan. And while it's extremely realistic, it's engaging and hilarious at the same time. The characters are great, so is the writing. Nothing overdramatic happens besides what you would see in real life. I highly, highly recommend this! It has a 9.6 IMDb rating currently.

"Breaking Bad" -- Not enough people watch this show, but it's probably because only seven episodes have been aired so far. It's about a middle-aged, awkward high school science teacher who discovers he has lung cancer. In order to have money to support his family (he hasn't told them he's sick), he uses his science knowledge to make meth with a former student. Bryan Cranston won a much-deserved Emmy for his performance. It's a really beautiful, complex, realistic, heartbreaking show. I think you'll love it. :) 9.0 on IMDb.

"Dead Like Me" -- If you like "Pushing Daisies," you should love this even more. The first season is worth taking a look at. It's quirky, funny, and has great character interaction. The whole grim reaper theme is also really interesting. 8.9 on IMDb.

"Wonderfalls" -- This is from the same creator of PD & DLM. It only lasted for a few episodes, but it's a fun, quirky show. 9.0 on IMDb.

"Veronica Mars" -- Alright, I know this show is fairly well-known. BUT it has been looked over by the people who might appreciate it most. If you appreciate witty shows with heart, you might like this. You don't have to like teen shows to enjoy this (I know I don't). It has a devoted cult following for a reason, both male and female. Give the first few episodes a try, I beg you! 8.7 on IMDb.

"It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" -- I've heard this show compared to "'Seinfeld' on crack," and that is exactly what it is. If you want a hilarious, refreshing take on a sitcom, try this. The only thing I should warn you about is how part of the show is making you despise the characters. There's absolutely no drama whatsoever. But it's funny. 9.6 on IMDb.

"Do Over" -- This isn't exactly a masterpiece (not that it tries to be), but it's a really cute show! If you want an easy show to watch that isn't all wacky gags but is still fun, try this. There are only a few episodes, anyway. 8.8 on IMDb.

"Dexter" -- Of course, how could I not recommend this? It's sooooo engaging and interesting, unlike the other repetitive mystery shows. What makes it special is that the characters are ACTUALLY developed and there's a lot more to the show than the murders. But those are interesting, too, of course. Another important thing I should mention is the amazing quality it's kept up over the seasons (3 so far). All of them are great. 9.1 on IMDb.

It is possible you know these series, but in case you do not, try:

Six Feet Under Excellent drama-series about a family-business of undertakers - Five seasons, now available on DVD.

Family ties A sitcom from the eighties, starring Michael J. Fox - You've got to see that one if you are a fan of his. Besides it's just great fun.

St Elsewhere The first season of this hospital drama from the eighties is available on DVD. If you like ER I bet you like this forerunner too!

Perfect Strangers this older (eithies/nineties)sitcom about two silly cousins ( Larry and Balki, the latter from Mypos) is good for a laugh! ("now we are so happy, we're doing the dance of joy!") first 2 seasons available on DVD.

Currently watching The Mentalist is this on American TV presently?
