Blu-ray questions

I'm going to upgrade to a new HDTV soon, but I thought I would go ahead and take advantage of the Blu-ray player deals that are out for the holidays. That way when I get my HDTV I'll already have a player, and I can go ahead and buy new releases in Blu-ray instead of DVD until then. The main reason I'm doing this is its easier for me right now to upgrade in stages instead of all at once (player, tv, etc...). Plus Blu-rays are only a little more on release week than the 2 disc DVD sets.
Anyway as I said I don't have the TV yet. I do have a 22 inch LCD monitor in my office/"computer room" that has a HDMI input and does HDCP (it accepts 720p/1080i/1080p on the HDMI input). I also have my old SDTV with S-Video input that my current DVD player is hooked up to.
I know on the monitor Blu-rays should look good, I'm just not sure how comfortable I'll be watching movies in there until I get the new TV. I plan to use the monitor, but I was wondering if anyone is watching Blu-rays or have watched them on a SDTV. Though S-Video will I notice any difference at all from my DVD player?
I've seen a few deals online today where the players are basically half off. That's one reason I'm really looking instead of waiting and getting a player with a HDTV purchase. I know it probably sounds crazy to get one without a TV, but I'm just looking right now and planning out a upgrade path that's easy on my wallet.
