List of abandoned projects

Post by Rumpelstiltskin »

Is there any official list of animated features that sometime in history have been planned, considered or even in pre-production, but never made it to actual production? If you search the internet, you can find an example here and there, but it would have been interesting with a full list.

What I have heard rumors about so far;

A third Fantasia movie
Roald Dahl's Gremlins
Rip Van Winkle
The Snow Queen
Don Quixote
Fraidy Cat
Through the Picture Frame
A Few Good Ghosts
Gnomeo and Juliet
Paul Gallico's The Abandoned (aka Jennie) and Scruffy
Chanticleer
Babar
Hiawatha (a feature, not the short)
Hansel and Gretel
The Four Musicians of Bremen

DUMBO 2 is another movie that seemed to just vanish.

Ooh, awesome idea for a thread! I love this kind of Disney trivia!

Here's information on "Chanticleer" and here's more.

Canceled films from the 'canon':

"Uncle Stiltskin"

A news article on it:

Bill and Cheri Steinkellner have sold their animated feature pitch Uncle Stiltskin to Walt Disney Co according to The Hollywood Reporter.

It is being described as the movie sequel to the Brother Grimm fairy tale 'Rumblestilskin', but the fabled aspiring babynapper Rumplestiltskin again tries to fulfill his dream of being a father, but this time he discovers the true meaning of family.

Canceled sequels:

Aristocats 2
Chicken Little 2: The Ugly Duckling Story
Disney's Dwarfs - The Snow White spin-off (basically the life story of the dwarves)
Dumbo II
Disney Princess Enchanted Tales: A Kingdom of Kindness (Beastly Manners segment with Belle and a second SB spin-off where Aurora throws a birthday for Prince Philip)
Disney Princess Enchanted Tales: Honest and True (with Cinderella and Mulan --- possibly still coming)
Meet the Robinsons 2: First Date
Hercules II: The Trojan War

...and then there's totally overhauled films:

'Rapunzel Unbraided' to "Rapunzel"
'American Dog' to "Bolt"

I have a bunch of articles and websites saved on my computer on this topic, so if anyone is interested in a particular film, let me know!

Here's a great 3-part article on Chanticleer:

At one time, Disney was in close negotiations with Clive Barker to turn his Abarat fantasy novels into animated features.

Oh, and there was Joe Jump which was about a video game character from the 80's who's now like forgotten and so he 'jumped' through eras and mascots of games on the way to do something (what we know about the plot is thin).

And Peter and the Starcatchers was once being prepared as an animated film for a release next year but it got turned into a play.

And there was "Mickey in Space" which was going to be a follow-up to "Mickey, Donald, Goofy: The Three Musketeers".

And this year was once the year when "The Search for Mickey Mouse" was to release - Mickey goes missing and all the famous Disney characters - Alice, Peter Pan, etc. go looking for him.

I hope someone takes that idea and makes a wonderful fanfic of it. In the Kingdom Hearts games, King Mickey goes missing and Sora, Goofy, and Donald have to look for him. Perhaps the makers of the games knew about "The Search for Mickey Mouse" and its rejection and paid tribute to it by having two Disney characters helping the hero to find Mickey.

Yup, character artist Jim McPherson confirmed it by email...

ME:

"Hello,

I wondered if you'd be willing to tell me about your work for Joe Jump. I'm quite interested in hearing about what you did/are doing."

JIM:

"Hi Neal,

You're right, I can't really say too much. I don't work there anymore. It's been about 2 years.

Joe Jump has been cancelled. I did visual development character modeling with the director and character designer Joe Moshier. I did CG models of the characters for presentations. The script has been changed several times over the last 2 years. The characters are different."

"ME: So Joe Jump will not ever come out then? As in it's permanently cancelled or just on a hiatus?

JIM: cancelled

ME:Are you able to discuss the plot of it or characters at all if it's cancelled? There's literally only whispers of it online.

JIM: not now, maybe someday."

Here's some information on Jim's work:

"Previously to Gentle Giant, I was appointed to join the Visual Development Team at Walt Disney Feature Animation to work with the director Sam Levine and character designer Joe Moshier on a film called Joe Jump. All the characters were developed in collaboration of drawing and modeling done in ZBrush 2. We translated a more graphic character style into 3D, slightly leaning towards “Toot, Whistle, Plunk and Boom” or UPA cartoons, but with a heavy influence of Milt Kahl and Tom Oreb’s work. Unfortunately, the movie was cancelled after 4 years in development. I hope to eventually get permission to show some of the characters. There were cyborg lizards, heavily armored heroes and amazon women designed in a new style. A lot of projects I’ve worked on in my career haven’t been completed."
