• As I predicted yesterday afternoon, Warner Home Video has just officially announced the U.S. DVD and Blu-ray Disc release of The Dark Knight on (again, just as predicted) 12/9. Available on that day will be a single-disc DVD (SRP $28.98 - separate widescreen and full frame versions), a 2-disc DVD Special Edition (SRP $34.99) and a 2-disc Blu-ray (SRP $35.99). The single-disc DVD will include just the film itself. The 2-disc DVD will include the film, plus the Gotham Uncovered: Creation of a Scene documentary, The Dark Knight IMAX Scenes (the ability to view the 6 IMAX sequences in their original framing), 6 episodes of the fictional Gotham Tonight news program, galleries of poster art and production stills, and a Digital Copy version of the film. The Blu-ray will include all that, plus the exclusive Batman Tech: The Incredible Gadgets and Tools and Batman Unmasked: The Psychology of The Dark Knight featurettes, additional galleries (Joker Cards, concept art), trailers, TV spots and BD-Live enhancement. The movie on the Blu-ray will also be enhanced with something called Focus Points. All the video features will be in full HD on the Blu-ray, and the audio will be Dolby TrueHD. The Blu-ray Disc will apparently also be available in Limited Edition packaging featuring a replica of the Batpod (pictured below), but we don't know yet if this is a retailer exclusive or if it will be more widely available. The two Blu-Ray exclusive featurettes ("Batman Tech" and "Batman Unmasked") are History Channel documentaries, and are quite good, so I'm gonna miss having them on the DVD (at least until I get the Blu-Ray in the somewhat-distant future).

DVDTimes includes additional images of the Blu-Ray Limited Edition, though it lists the "Gotham Uncovered" as the "Focus Points" (perhaps it is and hopefully the DVD simply presents all the focus points together as one documentary under the "Gotham Uncovered" title...).

From what I understand Gotham Uncovered is a documentary and the 'Focus Points' are aspect ratio changes from IMAX showings. I'm unsure. This is a very confusing time for all. Things that have been said to be coming on the DVD are not there and vice versa. Also the one disc DVD cover is better.

"Focus Points" aren't aspect ratio changes, they're a series of mini-featurettes that branch out during related scenes in the film. WB used the title before on the Blu-Ray for Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

I'm hoping that "Gotham Uncovered" is either the "Focus Points" collected together, or that it's a separate documentary from the "Focus Points" (making the "Focus Points" exclusive to Blu-Ray, while regular DVD buyers don't get gypped out of a making-of documentary with "Gotham Uncovered").

I'll rent this movie, but I think it's kind of overrated.

From what I understand, the IMAX aspect ratio version is only on the Blu-Ray?

Shame I don't have a Blu-Ray player... I could probably talk someone with a BD drive for their computer into encoding VOBs for me

But I'll ask for the 2-disc DVD for Christmas.

I, too, prefer the single-disc cover, but I'm still nabbing the Blu-Ray. The bonus features sound underwhelming, so I'm hoping the Focus Points amount to something worthwhile. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix had 63 minutes' worth of Focus Points. If the Dark Knight has roughly that amount, I'll be satisfied to have that combined with the TV specials and galleries.

Yeah, some 2-disc covers suck... (I have the 2-disc War of the Worlds and it looks gross, quite frankly)

Thank god for cdcovers.cc, huh? You can just print out the front of the single-disc one and stick it in your 2-disc case

The Blu Ray is all mine!!! Can't wait!

F*** YEAH! I think I will get both the 2 disc and blu ray. Don't have a blu ray player yet, probably won't for a year or two, but I want to have it for when I do get the player

Hellz yeah. Planning to get the standard one disc DVD (for travel, etc.) and the Blu-ray. LOVE this film, one of the best in years.

I read somewhere else that it will only be on Blu-Ray.

I guess I'll be happy with the 2-disc DVD then.

The cover art for the 2-Disc DVD and Blu-Ray (the one inside the sleeve) has been vandalized by the Joker. That's just an awesome touch.

I'll be picking up the 2-Disc Set for sure.

LOL, I guess some countries can't have unrated extras?

Though that is one thing I like about other countries... none of these "unrated versions"... I swear if they ever do that to a superhero movie like Batman I will kill someone... because the last thing they need is unnecessary profanity etc.!

But either way. I take it that only affects the UK version? Usually USA discs just say "Extra features not rated or closed captioned"

Under the Video Recordings Act 1984, all video releases not exempt (music, documentary, non-fiction, etc.) under the Act must be classified, it being illegal to supply any recording that has not been certified. Certificates can restrict release to any age of 18 or under, or to only licensed sex-shops. The government currently designate the BBFC as the authority for certifying video releases. As the Act requires the certificate to be displayed on the packaging and media labels of the video recording, in practice only UK releases can be legally sold or hired in the UK, even if a foreign release has identical content.

Yeah, as I thought, it was only for the UK.

They probably won't bother rating it on the region 1 release... I don't think they ever rate extras here (unless they're taken from other rated movies or something... such as some of the Ultimate Matrix Collection bonus discs)
