Question About Upcoming DVDs

Okay, so a few titles (Wall E and Prince Caspian) have the three-disc edition option with a "digital copy". Can someone explain to me what this means?

My problem lies with Blu-Ray. I never know which titles to buy in Blu-Ray because I'm so OCD that the Blu-Ray cases drive me insane. I was HOPING that the three disc digital copy meant that it would have a blu-ray disc(s) with normal-looking DVD cases, and not Blu-Ray cases.

I also think Sleeping Beauty is having the three-disc option, but what does it mean?

I hope I made sense. If anyone can help, I appreciate it. Also, if anyone can give me a list of the titles getting this three-disc treatment, I'd appreciate that also.

Thanks!

A digital copy is a copy of a movie you can put on your computer or portable device. To me this is just a gimmick Disney uses to up the SRP of their DVDs.

Sleeping Beauty Blu-Ray has 3 discs, 2 Blu-Ray Discs and 1 DVD. This is for people who also want to watch the movie on DVD.

Hope that helps.

Oh, I see. For the digital copy versions, do the other two discs come in blu-ray? I just hate the blu-ray cases. :P

What's wrong with the Blu-ray cases?

They look horrible compared to the regular DVD cases. I dunno, I just hate the blue border around it with the Blu-Ray thing at the top. And they're smaller than the regular cases. They make my OCD go crazy. I love the quality and everything though, so it's enough to make me want them, but if the cases were nicer, I'd be happier.

If you buy the Blu-Ray version yes.

But some DVD sets ( like The Nightmare Before Christmas Collectors Edition) also come with a Digital Copy.

Okay, I think I'll go with the three-disc blu-ray copies. I'll need to get over this OCD so I can enjoy the blu-ray more. :P

Does anyone know which movies will be coming out in the 3-disc Blu-Ray digital copy thing?

WALL-E is. It's coming out with 3-discs (in both Blu-ray and DVD editions), both with DisneyFile Digital Copy. There's also the recently released Nightmare Before Christmas on Blu-ray and DVD and the new Narnia movie, Prince Caspian or whatever.

Who actually has a Blu-Ray drive for their computer to even make use of Digital Copy? LOL

I'll stick to DVD... I like Blu-Ray but the problem is that we'll only have one TV to watch them on... and until they come out with 8" portable Blu-Ray players, I have no way to take them anywhere. So for me it's buy the DVD, rent the Blu-Ray when I want to watch it.

Waste of money, maybe, but it makes more sense given what I use them for.

I may or may not get the 3-disc set... Depends if there's something other than the digital copy on the third disc. Honestly, those digital copies are a joke... I got the iTunes one of Family Guy: Blue Harvest, decrypted it, and watched it... it's really pixelated and there's tons of motion blurring! (Likely due to them not properly deinterlacing it)

I could do better just by ripping the stupid thing myself. So far I haven't been impressed with Digital Copy (I mean, EW DRM, but as long as you can remove it that's fine... though I have yet to see one that looks at least decent!)

It's just a digital copy. A complete waste.

The Digital Copy is on a separate DVD, so you only need a DVD drive on your PC, not a BD drive.[/quote]

But you can't rip BD discs, especially if you don't have a Blu-ray drive (see your first quote above), and even if you could, it would be a much slower and time consuming process. So it makes perfect sense for the Studios to include a digital copy with BD discs. Not only is it a service for the customer, but it will (hopefully) stop ripping of BD discs becoming as common as ripping of DVD discs is now. Because people won't have to own any BD ripping software.

It's obviously not a waste of time (Escapay! :)) because people rip DVDs now, and a fair fraction of these rips do end up on portable media players/PSPs/iPods, so there is obviously demand for such a feature. Studios should be praised for supplying demand!

Note: Disney is the only studio charging extra for digital copies. Says it all really - even when being generous, Disney's being tightfisted.

I meant it's a waste of a disc, because it *only* has a digital copy. I don't know how much room a digital copy takes up on a disc, but it seems rather silly to use an entire disc just for one digital copy rather than add some more bonus features on it.

I really don't have a need for a digital copy, so it's a complete waste for me (and I'm sure many others). But for the few people that do use it, I seem to come across more negative assessments of it than positive ones (mainly that it isn't compatible with whatever portable device they want).

Well, so far no UK release has ever had a digital copy, not just from Disney, but all studios. I think Fox's [? - not sure of the distributor] The Happening will be our first. So I can only guess, but I would guess it will be no more than 1.5gig, most likely half that.. So yes, I can see your point about it being a waste as other features could be included. I agree 100%. Now, for example, they have somewhere to put all the trailers and TV spots. Which we all know, will never happen.

I agree, ditigal copies are a waste. I have a few movies that came with a digital copy. Never use them.

There actually is a way to rip Blu-Ray discs. I doubt the mods will be too happy if I get too in-depth but I'll say that certain free programs can do it just fine. Of course, what are you gonna do with a 25GB or 50GB ISO?

I thought the Blu-Ray digital copy was on a BD disc, I didn't realize it was a DVD.

I have a MS Zune and Sansa player... so Digital Copy "shouldn't" work for me anyway. Though Zune works great with decrypted iTunes videos so the only use for that is laziness - I can just as easily run it through Auto Gordian Knot or something and make a better quality one. All I know is Family Guy: Blue Harvest was a stupid encode... the point where there was actually a lot of blurriness when people are talking, and if it wasn't free with the movie I wouldn't pay for it.

So there will be a 2 disc set and then a 3 disc set that has Digital Copy included? I wonder if the 3 disc sett will have more DMR points than the 2 disc one?

Of course there's a way, but its time consuming, most people don't have BD drives in their PCs and like it or not, BD+ is likely to, if not totally eliminate copying, make it much harder.

So by getting in early, the studios remove the need for anybody to have ripping software, and hopefully, ripping BD discs won't be as prevalent as DVD ripping is now.

However, I seem to remember both HD DVD (RIP) and Blu-ray promising MMC - Mandatory Managed Copy. If BD gets its act into order, they wouldn't have to keep wasting discs with digital copies would they? (Although, more people would have to get PC BD drives to make it worthwhile).

Why won't a Zune work? Surely it will work with Microsoft digital distribution protected files? Most complaints seem to be that the files are MS copy protected and not compatible with iTunes (these are files from Warner bros though)

Nah, the Zune is stupid in that it needs its own DRM. It's not "PlaysForSure" compatible... only Zune Marketplace DRM will work. And thanks to the Zune software, I'm using Windows Media Format Runtime 11 which pretty much makes decrypting impossible.

It does work with iTunes files but obviously not encrypted ones.

Unfortunately, mandatory managed copy is highly unlikely to ever become mandatory for the final AACS spec.

Providing digital copies is actually a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_A ... illment of the managed copy provision...and since digital copies are likely to be the only MMC support that will ever materialize, I'm happy to see them.
