Why is Sleeping Beauty the 1st disney movie out on Blu-Ray?
At least of the 2D animated ones.

Just wondering. I mean, I love sleeping beauty, but why did disney choose it to be the very first out on Blu Ray? It seems so random. Cinderella just seems like something theyd more likely put out, or snow white. If not one of those, then Beauty and the Beast, their best movie. Any reason as to why they chose Sleeping Beauty out of all their movies? I can think of old ones that seem like they would be a bigger deal coming out on Blu Ray..snow white..dumbo..pinocchio..cinderella....etc.

I think it's because SB's already had a decent DVD release (the Special Edition in 2003), so they need to give people more incentive to buy it again.

1. Sleeping Beauty isn't regarded by Disney as one of their crowned jewels. That's not to say Disney thinks it's a dog, but I'd say in the Disney family, Sleeping Beauty is upper middle class, not quite reaching the revered status of its sisters Snow White and Cinderella. Blu-Ray is still a growing format. Disney's not going to kick off something that hasn't caught on with the average Joe, yet, with one of their biggest titles. Sleeping Beauty is esteemed enough that Disney can make more of a big deal of it than they can with, say, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, but it's not high enough for Disney to be diving into the BD market too quickly.

2. It's a lush, widescreen film with a stunning soundtrack. Of all the animated classics out there to showcase the look and sound of high-definition, Sleeping Beauty may just be the perfect one. Its backgrounds and line art are detailed and precise enough for people to notice the upgrade over DVD, and its stereo mix is grand enough to be remixed into 7.1. Even some of the more prized Disney films like Pinocchio can't offer the same level of demo quality.

3. Disney's already gone through its original 10 Platinums. If it wasn't going to be Sleeping Beauty kicking off the animated classic BDs, then it would've had to have been either The Jungle Book, 101 Dalmatians, Pinocchio, or Fantasia. Disney certainly wouldn't experiment with the first two because of point #1 (too popular). The last two seem like good candidates, but not as good as Sleeping Beauty because of point #2 (not as drastic showcases).

I, personally, think this was one of the few brilliant marketing moves Disney's done. I don't know how much thought they put into making Sleeping Beauty the first animated classic BD, but the reasoning and benefits make perfect sense to me.

They decided to debut animated classics on BD with a Platinum title and SB is next in rotation. Pinocchio will come in the spring.

Actually, the real reason is that it's the first animated film shot in Super Technirama 70 widescreen, so there won't be a load of folks complaining that BDs aren't supposed to have black bars on the sides of the picture.

I initially thought it was because SB hadn't been released as PE yet (whereas both Cinderella and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs had been already), and by coincidence, SB had been the next film to be released with BluRay, but thinking about it the way Disneykid explained it, it does make a lot more sense.

I also considered it might have been because of Merryweather's line which is used in a lot of Disney's BluRay promos. :P

1.It's a Princess movie.
2.People love this movie.
3.It's a Walt era movie.
4.Aurora is wonderful.
5.Maleficent is wonderful.
6.The castle from the film is in the Disney theme parks.
More questions? :D.

^that doesn't separate Sleeping Beauty from Cinderella nor Beauty and the Beast at all!

I don't know why Disney is using SB as their debuting title for the traditional classics, but if it was a coincidence, it's an amazing one, as out of all their 44 hand-drawn films, none of them but Sleeping Beauty can fully utilize and demonstrate the strength of the format to it's full capacity.

Well actually, Fantasia would do well as well. But you know, SB=LOVE!

No, instead there will be loads of folks complaining that there are big black bars on the top and bottom of the picture :D.

Same here! I thought it was just down to coincidence but after reading DisneyKid's points, I came to realise why Disney may have in fact chosen Sleeping Beauty as their first Blu-Ray release (for a platinum edition that is ). I must say, bravo DisneyKid

Like The Thief and The Cobbler, Sleeping Beauty is craftmanship. Filmed in cinema-scope, beautiful detail, and animation. That's possibly why it's the first Disney classic on Blu-Ray. Plus, it's almost the film's 50th birthday, so that's possibly another reason. ;)

The reasons were so eloquently put by Disneykid (though I would not describe SB as 'Upper Middle Class' so much as 'Bourgeois' to Fantasia's 'Aristocracy'. Sort of the Hyacinth Bucket of Disney films  )

It's an ideal film for Blu-Ray because it's exquisite detail exhibits the virtues of the new format.

I think they mean it's the first animated classic to be released as Blu-Ray.

I always thought it was just mere coincidence, yet still was delighted about it and thought it was an excellent choice. After all, Sleeping Beauty is "wondrous to see, glorious to hear!"

I'm so happy my one of my most adored Princess gets the honor of having the first Blu-Ray release! It's perfect for her movie to get the Blu-Ray treatment - it only does justice to the beautiful artwork and music that make up the movie! Go on Aurora, strut your stuff!!!!
LOL

I'm going with option 2. :) I love SB for its visual and soundtrack.

Why do I think its the first on Blu-Ray? I dunno, one of them has to be first right? So why not SB.
