Turns out Ryan is gay. Go figure!
I'm happy to see Disney put a strong gay character in a show aimed at a younger audience. Considering alterations to the show actually make Ryan the hero of sorts is even more exciting. It gives the gay portion of teenage audience a character they can actually look up to.

for Disney allowing this to take place.
Despite my great dislike of the High School Musical movies I do plan on seeing the show if I get the chance. Stage musicals based on movies are 99% of the time better than the movie. I may actually enjoy the show.

Um.... these are just critics analyzing the stage show who say the show strongly points he is gay. But if doesn't mean he's "officially" out.
"Officially" means Disney confirmed it or it actually gets stated in the show.

Yeah, really. It will be official if Ryan declares his love for men to Sharpay in HSM3, not when more overt references are made in the stage show.

The interview is with the writer of the show. Umm I'm pretty sure he of all people would know.

Me too

, I was like "I knew it" and then it turned out to be just an interview with one of the writers who said something that everybody has already figured out.
But still, it is a good sign that Disney is accepting that and not trying to change anything.

No,
really?
Mad TV beat this guy to it though when it came to the news.

I agree with T/P fan- it's not like he's officially "out". Sure, the writer may have had a gay Ryan in mind when he wrote the stage show...Disney isn't going to claim that the character of Ryan (or even just the stage show version of him) is gay...that's not likely to happen anytime soon.
I think that Ryan (the movie version) is confused about his sexuality. In HSM2, he definitely seems to have feelings for Gabriella. He's at a point in his life where he's exploring his options, I guess.

Yeah, the writer of the STAGE show. It's all well and good for him to write a previously established character as gay-acting in one version of HSM and then say out of the show's context the character is gay, but that doesn't change anything in the movies. It doesn't mean Ryan couldn't wind up with a girl in HSM3.

Well, let's not go THAT far.

I don't think he had feelings for her, so much as he finally has a friend, besides Sharpay.

if you're referring to my deleted post, I clicked on the wrong topic.
It's too bad this topic isn't about the outing of Zac Efron... cause now I don't have anything interesting to say

Yeah, that's true, I guess. We'll just have to see if Disney pairs him up with someone in HSM3. I'm not opposed to Ryan being gay, and I think that there's a huge chance that he is...if Disney doesn't pair him up with a girl in HSM3, then we can safely assume that Disney thinks of him as gay.
I remember when HSM2 came out, and people thought that Disney paired him up with Martha, since they danced together during "All For One"...we'll see if they are paired together in the third film...

If it were Zac I'd say 'HOORAY!'
If it were movie Ryan I'd say 'good for him' or 'thats better than insect that some people seem to think's gonnin' on'.
Since it's a Ryan from the play it just kinda 'sure whatever'.
I hope not but I fully expect him to have a girlfriend in the next film.
Whatever happens though I wanna be Ryan!

Well, with Disney, they'll most likely force him into an awkward chemistry-less relationship with some girl in the third movie. You know, just to put an end to the possibly detrimental speculations.
But we all know he's gay.
Come to think of it, though, wouldn't it be more interesting if he weren't? It'd be nice to see some counter to the gay stereotypes (sort of like the son in
Still Standing--an otherwise stereotypical show) and some support for men who happen to act or be interested in things that the general public slaps the gay label on.

HSM the stage play was awesome when I saw it in Boston. Ryan's gayness was evident for those in tune with it but it wasn't pushed in any way, and many people who don't care probably overlooked it. It made me very happy though to see his portrayal as gay so evident in the play.
Bobby List was absolutely fabulous as Ryan, and he was very gracious as a person as well meeeting with people after the show.
I wish Disney would make a cast recording of HSM On Tour because it is so much better than the movie. It carries itself to the stage quite effectively. Those few who have the chance to see it before its run ends in August should do so.

Ok, I thought the whole point of his character was to have your stereotypical popular gay boy....

Okay, I've never seen any HSM movie all the way through (nor do I think I want to

), but I am happy to see that Disney is allowing this for the production. Even though it's not the movie, I'm happy that they imply it in the stage production, and as Widdi mentioned, it gives a sort of gay role model for tweens/teens.

That's great and all, but call me when it happens in the movie, then we'll be in business.
