so summer is coming up. my family usually buys a ton of movies for vacation to keep us entertained. well this year now that we have a 2 year old in the family we started collecting disney movies. but with vacation we were thinking about buying a few other, mainly pinocchio, hunchback, hercules, and the rescuers. only thing is im very hesitant about buying these since none of these have been released in a while. now i know pinocchio is supposedly the next platinum after sleeping beauty but is it officially confirmed because I've also heard beauty and the beast and snow white were the 2009s. so what would your advice be. especially considering we have a 2 year old that will need entertainment on a 15 hour drive...

Pinocchio is confirmed for spring 2009, yes. Jury's still out on the fall 2009 title, though I think it's likely to be either Snow White or Beauty and the Beast as you mentioned. Hunchback and Hercules are the two non-Platinums that seem the most logical to get reivisited (especially Hercules since its DVD is non-anamorphic and barebones), but they've been obvious canidates for the past several years and nothing's happened, so no one will know what to tell you, I think. Hunchback is a little intense for a 2 year old anyway, I'd think.

Of thhe titles which are in print now, I would stronly reccomend both Dumbo and The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh. Their in-print ediitions are both fairly solid, and they've already been reissued once each in the past couple of years so I doubt that you will have a problem with a double dip soon (outside of perhaps Blu-ray.) 101 Dalmatians and Peter Pan would be good choices too depending on wheather or not your child will be intimidated by either Cruella or Captian Hook.

we have 101 dalmatians and peter pan. but i was thinking most likely if hercules and or hunchback were to be rereleased would the announcement come in the form of commercials on the Sword and the Stone dvd?

I have no idea. It wouldn't hurt to wait and see, but I'm not holding my breath for either of these titles to receive reissues soon, simply because everyone has thought they would for years but they haven't gotten them. It would be smart for Disney to do, which is exactly why they won't. Hercules is more of an issue because, as my review from a few years ago notes, its DVD is non-anamorphic ported from the laserdisc and mighty slim on the extras. Hunchback is at least anamorphic with a good transfer and some solid suppliments, including the original making-of doccumentary TV s[pecial from 1996 and a very fine audio commentary from the directors. While we know there is more material available for this, it's not too shabby.

The preview trailers will most likely include (regarding DAC's) the Mulan Two-Movie collection for August and the Sleeping Beauty: Platinum Edition for October. And given that Oliver & Company seems to be next for "repackage the old disc with new art and cover", there may be one for that, even though Disney hasn't officially announced anything yet.
