Over at The Digital Bits...

It's only been two years since the 25th AE and yet TheDigitalBits have announced and wrote:Now then... in announcement news today, Buena Vista has revealed that they're delivering The Fox and the Hound: 25th Anniversary Edition, as well as The Fox and the Hound 2, on DVD on 10/10. Extras on The Fox and the Hound: 25th will include an interactive game, a DVD storybook feature and more TBA.

I suspect it's just a simple repackaging of the existing discs and will be a cheaply done two-movie collection similar to the Mulan Two-Movie Collection.

One word sums this all up: pointless. Does Disney really think people are that stupid?!

I wish Disney would focus more on good releases for movies that haven't had one in a while, or ever: like Hercules, Hunchback, and Oliver. This is really pointless.

I'm confused....For the Fox and The Hound 25th anniversary DVD, why are some features "to be announced" when the DVD has already been out for 1 1/2 years? Is it going to be a "new" 25th anniv. edition with more bonus features or something? I agree with the poster above, Disney should give something like The Greate Mouse Detective a good DVD instead of rereleasing the same ones every 2 years; this sucks.

If only they'd present Fox in its original widescreen ratio then I'd fly over to the US, worship Iger and propose he be beatified by the Vatican.

I'm pretty sure there's no new collection being released. Just a temporary price reduction for both of these as well as <a href="http://www.ultimatedisney.com/robinhood ... "><i>Robin Hood</i>: Most Wanted Edition</a>, <i>Mickey's Once Upon a Christmas</i>, and <a href="http://www.ultimatedisney.com/mickeystw ... i>Mickey's Twice Upon a Christmas</i></a>. I can see how Digital Bits made the mistake, but it's still a mistake. Almost positive about that.

ummm yeah, why else would they still release movies in fullscreen.

Because they were animated that way.

If you preferred Robin Hood: The Most Wanted Edition to the Gold Classics Collection, you obviously have very low standards

He's referring to Disney's stupid practice of releasing live-action catalogue titles to R1 DVD in pan-and-scan rather than widescreen, but having them be anamorphic widescreen overseas. And the new two-movie collections (which basically recycle the original releases in a new two-disc amaray case) more often than not use the fullscreen version (if the DVD was issued in widescreen or fullscreen), along with not correcting the old fullscreen-only DVDs with a new widescreen one (Homeward Bound, Savage Sam, and Son of Flubber, for example.)

All my live-action Disney movies are widescreen... like Chronicles of Narnia, National Treasure, Pirates of the Caribbean, etc. I know there was also a fullscreen version, but they had widescreen too...
And this is why I avoid movie boxsets unless they're a series (Star Wars, Indiana Jones, etc.)
And since Disney sequels suck (for the most part) I have no inclination to buy a 2-pack of any animated film with a sequel. The only sequels I liked were Toy Story 2, Pirates 2 (3 was so-so but kinda stupid) and National Treasure. I'm hoping to see Narnia this weekend...


And on the note of fullscreen Disney Channel movies...
Was Smart House filmed in widescreen? (The DVD I got is widescreen) Or did they pull an Aladdin 3 treatment and just chop the top and bottom off?

Just curious, are these DVDs being repriced or reissued in the US?

Well, there is one HUGE, obvious bonus feature they should have on a new "Fox and the Hound" Special Edition - - and that's "Disney Animation: The Illusion of Life" - - the "Wonderful World of Disney" show hosted by Hayley Mills that plugs "Fox and the Hound" - - showing a recording session with Pearl Bailey, Glen Keane animating the bear, etc.

That would be the only reason I'd ever buy it.

You do realize there were such things as Disney movies before 2003, don't you?

I'm talking about how Disney stupidly issues various catalogue titles in pan-and-scan only, without having the OAR widescreen counterpart (or only releasing the OAR widescreen overseas).

Which also goes to show just how committed Disney is to releasing live-action catalogue titles.

Since about 2002 or so, Disney Channel Movies are filmed with dual-ratios in mind (the widescreen versions are shown in OAR on HD broadcasts and overseas), and as is often the case, the fullscreen DVDs are pan-and-scan of the widescreen.

Smart House is from 1999, so 1.33:1 is more than likely its OAR. I don't have the DMC DVD so I can't compare it to an old VHS I have lying about somewhere with Smart House taped off of it, but I'm pretty sure that the widescreen presentation is cropped.

Don't remind me about Blackbeard's Ghost. It's an old favorite (that I haven't seen in years) and its abysmally cropped DVD is the reason why I haven't seen it in years!

A little of-topic, but Scaps, I really want to see B'sG, but I don't know if I should spend my money on that bad of a release.. Should I?

If you wanna see it, rent it (or, if we get lucky in the next six months, catch it on TCM or Hallmark Channel if they air it). But the picture is just so horribly cropped (even worse than drfsupercenter could ever imagine), that no amount of "But I love the movie" should ever justify an outright purchase of the R1 DVD. It is as ichabod said...too weird for words...

Blackbeard's Ghost DVD, not just P+S but very weird!

If you've got a multi-region player, get the R2 one (which is shown in the thread as well...

With the current release, I'd only recommend a rental. It really is a good movie, but you don't want to invest in owning the current version available.

Weren't 'Kidnapped' and 'Toby Tyler' originally filmed in fullscreen? I'm thinking they were in that period like "Darby O'Gill" where they were filmed in fullscreen and then cropped for widescreen theatrical runs. I'm not sure....I just totally have this in my head for some reason.

The titles I'm most pissed about the fullscreen transfers are:

The Moon-Spinners
In Search of the Castaways
Blackbeard's Ghost
Miracle of the White Stallions

Complete atrocities! Disney should be ashamed of these DVD presentations
