 I have the cut-off at '75 because that's when the "blockbuster" and "event film" period started and pretty much finalized the "transition" in Hollywood from the old studio system to the way movies are made today.

TCM is my favorite cable channel, but it doesn't play some of my favorites very often (for example: I've seen Random Harvest probably only twice in the past 18 months, and it's a title I have yet to get on DVD). Plus, I'm a HUGE fan of bonus features and like having the film's trailers, commentaries, documentaries, etc. :D

But life is best with both TCM and DVDs.

Classic means that the movies are timeless and probably will never age.
Here is my list (I may add more later).

Bambi (1942)
King Kong (1933)
Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)
Monty Python's Life of Brian (1979)
One Hundred and One Dalmatians (1961)
Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)
Sleeping Beauty (1959)
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937)
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971)

I don't have any cable whatsover, but sometimes I feel like I own a small TCM outlet in my bedroom with the amount of DVDs I have in there!

Plus, I do theme nights where I pair up movies (for eg. "Lady on a Train" with Deanna Durbin might be screened alongside the Mike Shayne mystery "Sleepers West"); or I'll do a marathon of three or four films back-to-back.

There's really no point in getting cable, as far as I go. But the TCM website is very fun, and I visit it often.

I've got something called "Showbox" it records all my favourite movies and T.V shows, it's really useful, I think you guys have something similar called Tivo @ the U.S, isn't that the same ?

Yes, but does Showbox or Tivo provide all the special features that DVD offers? No. There's no audio commentaries, no documentaries, no trailers, no deleted scenes. Also, no meticulous restorations, no original mono mixes and 5.1 remixes, no foreign language options/subtitles, and no anamorphic enhancement on otherwise-letterbox presentations.

Plus, Showbox and Tivo only hold a limited amount of programs, and some for only a limited amount of days. When you have the DVD, you have it forever (or until someone steals it/until you scratch it up that it can't play/until you sell it to buy something else/until you replace it with the re-release).
